Thee way to conduct and perform this symphony, sadly underrated as "the little C major". Thanks for posting it. Schubert's appreciation of Rossini also shows here as well.
This is one of the best, and best photographed, classical performances on the internet. Manacorda gets a magnificent performance out of this excellent orchestra. The concert audience shouts its approval of both. Schubert wrote this symphony when he was 20 and it was published when he was 21. This performance lets you know just where he was on his great path. The high definition video is superb -- you can see the performance so well that I felt that I knew a number of the players by the time it was over.
Driving in my car and caught this piece being played on a Portland FM station . Couldn't put my finger on the composer. It had hints of Hayden, Mozart and Beethoven. Yet there was a lilting cadence that gave it a pulse all it's own. What a surprise when it was announced to be Schubert's 6th....What a great piece.
Man, this is the way to do it! A modern orchestra, but with natural horns, trumpets, and period tympani, and a superb, crisply articulated, and exciting a performance of the Schubert Sixth as you are going to here. The Frankfurters and Manacorda are on top of their game!
jeff miller, i agree...I've always felt Schubert possessed a more sanguine spirit than most composers - and this comes thru so much of his music - it often has a very pleasant pastoral quality (and even in more energetic moments maintains a more good natured disposition, as if one is part of a lively rustic dance) - i rarely get the feeling that he is shaking his fist in anger or disgust - or that he ever becomes too overblown with heroic drama
Thank you Val Lamon for your insightful ideas regarding this symphony. You manage to verbalize that something my ears are hearing when I enjoy this art. It's full of uplifting, Positive energy. Even some humor.
Tis sixth symphony by Scubert is much less played that the symphonies 4,5,8,9. But by no wayq it is inferior. It is an excellent initiative to have posted it. Thx a lot. As so often in Schubert's orchstral music, the instrumentation is both simple ans sophistivated, enhancing woodwinds. The second movement is a good example of these "obsessional" moderate movements, with tone disruptions '(tuuti with timbals).
I've always thought that this symphony is awkward, its development somewhat ineffective, and its abrupt dynamic changes unsettling; with this performance however, I've gained a new appreciation of it. Manacorda de-emphasizes its bombastic nature and infuses it with a Viennese lilt necessary for the score. The Haydnesque 'andante' is charming, and the 'scherzo' sounds as if it could have come from Beethoven's Seventh. I still think the finale is too long, but its dance-like quality, including a Spanish-sounding theme, has never sounded better.
I did not expect to find natural horns and trumpets in any Schubert recordings. Now that I have seen and heard the results I am very thrilled! An interesting mixture of current day and older instruments. Does it work?Alistair
Very enjoyable performance - crisp and precise.

Great ! Keeps us all on our toes.
Pure magic! Many thanks for sharing this.

0:12 Adagio - Allegro
7:55 Andante
13:53 Presto - Più lento
21:00 Allegro moderato
I just discovered this. I really must get out more. :o)
Excelente interpretación de una encantadora sinfonia romántica.
Genial...
Spirited and frolicsome. Beautiful dynamics and tempi. Great performance. Bravo! Bravo! Thank you for the video.
This is a cracking orchestra. Their performance of Tchaikovsky's 1st Symphony was fantastic, and this is simply sublime.
Many thanks for giving us this joy. This reminds me to Beethoven and Verdi.
Yeees me too. Isn't the Theme at for example at 4:52 exaktly the same aß in some Verdi Opera (I think from the Party at La Traviata or something)

"NATURAL" horns, trumpets???!!!???!!!???
Marco Cattaneo yep watch the video. Period brass and tympani.
"Natural"???!!!???!!!
Do they grow on trees?
That's the term we use in English. I can see how you may find it amusing. :))
This is so underrated
There is something about this symphony. I can't put my finger on it. It is beyond my poor power to comprehend. All I know is that it is wonderful.

@@VallaMusic I like how you've slighted Beethoven without actually calling him out by name.
Schubert, mon amour....
Extrem genial

BRAVO BRAVO GREAT!!
Wspaniale. Brawo.
Magic!
Magnifique ,, bravo bravo 😶
Your videos are really of outstanding interest and beauty. Thank so much !
To me this appears to be an experimental symphony of Schubert. Maybe that is why it never became popular.

2. Satz 7:56
3. Satz 14:18
4. Satz 21:03
Schubert wrote no concertos but it occurs to me that the interplay between the twittering woodwinds and orchestra in the allegro is concerto-like.
is the solo Nicolas Cock-Vassiliou?
o me equivoco??
Natural horn 1:43
And what about it?
2:48 - 3:20
21:03
What kind of horns are these?
linuxtuxxx these are ''natural horns'' For further information, please read Wikipedia

This man mangled the fourth movement. It had no flow and certainly was the weakest part of the symphony performance (of the symphony itself as well).
On the contrary, I thought his interpretation of the fourth movement was excellent. Overall, this is the best recording I’ve heard of this symphony.
