- A fresh batch of BTI / Mosquito Dunks solution was prepared after the last check-in & has been applied on a number of occasions. It is still - perhaps - too early to see any improvement with the flying insect issue... but we're remaining hopeful that the fresh BTI will work better than the old stuff did

I just noticed that I have gnats in my worm bin. I have Mosquito Bits so I started spraying my bin with a solution of that and water. I bought some yellow sticky traps and stood a couple of them up in my bin. Also, put tulle over the top of my bin. I should probably remove my plastic cover, too.
Hope all of that works ...
I enjoy your videos and am learning so much.
Yellow sticky trap and BTI is what I use but it takes a while.
Sounds like you've got a solid plan in place. Hopefully you rid yourself of the pests soon! 👍🏻
I wonder if you could sneakily stick the hose of a vacuum cleaner in there and give the bag a kick while you have it on to get rid of all those adults while the BTI works on their children??!? I had a couple of folks mention they put the bits right into the bin, maybe crumble up a dunk if that's what you have??!? Either way, hopefully this is their last hurrah in your VermiBag!! Yep, I use more bedding in my UWB but that's because I don't have patience & want to see it bulk up quick😀Excellent video AV!!🪱🪱🪱
I've seen that guy Newell on the World Composting channel use the vacuum trick to round up the flying insects in his bag system.. but I have never really though about trying it myself. And I've seen other places (can't recall where) they added the Mosquito Dunks to their worm chow - which is akin to your idea of putting the bits straight into the system.
I suppose I'd really like to know that I can reproduce the great results I once had in the VermiBag Tote when I managed to rid myself of the pests using the BTI solution. I was fairly sure that I was screwing something up - and I suspect that the mistake I made was just keeping that stuff around for too long - compounded with me diluting it each time I would use some of it up. I think that I should begin seeing better results if I keep to using the stuff while it is freshly prepared and not watering it down... :)
These bags are meant to give you big harvest every month .if you use it as intended. Yes you should add about double of what bedding you add. Then the level will actually rise.
I worry about opening the bottom too soon & not having a rigid enough block of semi-solid material that will hold itself in place. Perhaps some day I will actually harvest some castings from it :)
Maybe hit the bag with your bigger sprayer with the BTI. It almost seems like they were the very top and the castings. When you mixed up the leaves you kinda got hit with a lot more flies. Just trying to help
If I were to switch to using the bigger sprayer then my index finger of my right hand would miss out on all that wonderful exercise it gets from me pumping the little blue spray bottle :)
But seriously... I am confident that using the fresh batch of solution will finally solve this issue - and I think that the amounts that I am able to dispense with the small pump bottle will be enough. After all, I did have success with this stuff in the past - and then too I used only the small bottle to dispense the stuff
I get fungus gnats in my potted plants sometimes they take a while to get rid of
I long for the day that I see no more gnats in my VermiBag Mini... :)
The yellow sticky traps will trap any kind of tiny bug!Try that because you might not know exactly what they are.
You make a valid point :)
@@A-V I know I do because I have fought the battle. It's a long long battle even with the yellow sticky traps. I do believe they would even catch a larger bug or a spider or anything else that gets on it cuz they stay sticky for years. I usually keep a couple of them in the worm bin room in my apartment and one in the kitchen in case they find the kitchen interesting....keep up the good work!
The vinegar traps are only good for catching fruit flies, not fungus gnats. Also, apple cider vinegar works much better than distilled white vinegar. I think distilled white vinegar is just too refined to attract fruit flies into it.
I'm learning that now - another viewer made a similar comment :)
Vinegar is for fruit flies not fungus gnats
I do get some fungus gnats in my vinegar traps along with many fruit flies, but agree yellow sticky traps and BTI work best for fungus gnats. Also, I dilute the vinegar with water. I think straight vinegar is too strong.
That explains why my trap is still producing zero results. Sounds like the time has come to retire it since it's never going to do anything for my situation :)
