"Restoring" a Janky Old Go Kart

- My dad got this thing for $50 bucks and asked me if I wanted to fix it up.The goal was to restore the go kart for as cheap as possible using supplies we had on hand in the shop if possible. I ended up having to buy a couple things that were broken, but overall I think I achieved the goal. Paint job is 100% Rust-Oleum. Even after all this work, the thing is still a deathtrap with scary handling at top speed. Stay tuned for a video on what went into restoring the engine. I found something pretty interesting when I tore it apart... The video on the kart itself was long enough that I didn't want to include everything with the engine and end up with a 1 hour + video.

It’s nice to come across a channel which doesn’t throw a load of dirt and brown paint over something and call it rusty. Not all restorations have to be destroyed before giving them a new lease of life and for this, I thank you!

Lordy this brings back memories! As a kid I used to race around country roads with that same style go kart. It was a blast. It was really hard to tip over. I’m 63 now.

My neighbors was a 4 hp and I think it did about 35 mph. I wonder if this is geared to go faster or accelerate faster. The brake was metal flaps on a shaft that rubbed against the rear tires no brakes on the front. I remember in the dirt it was almost like no brakes at all.

Yeah, it's just janky. Too many things that could have been improved and too many that were done incorrectly. But, it's better than it was though.

@@JD-iu3viin which part of the restoration was done incorrectly? The only thing I seen that could’ve been added was the suspension. Other than that I don’t believe anything else was left out IMO
When I was a kid my next door friends had two of these. So me and my father built one. It was a six hp, two wheel drive, monster built out of bed frame angle iron, parts from a corn hopper and a lawn tractor we had salvaged from a barn fire. The looks on there faces when I roared out of the barnyard to meet them as they drove by I will remember till the day I die.
Go carts are a lot of fun. When I was a young teen, my friend Bob Williams and I both had a go cart. I lived in Garden city Mineola line, Long island New York . He and I rode our carts in the old Mitchel Field base. ( Where Nassau County Arena was.) These days, there is no where to ride them anymore.
we have lots of orv trails where i live. i am really surprised we don't see more of them on the trails. brake light and a flag good to go

Awesome video. I love to see something really old and almost forgotten being restored to brand new condition again. I always wanted one of these when I was a kid many moons ago. I'd love to try my hand at restoring something like this. Has to be a very satisfying experience..

I literally just got one of this same style at 35 years old 😂 I always wanted one but was too poor to afford a new one or just to build one. I received mine two days ago for helping someone clean up their basement. He was going to give me 40 dollars for payment until he said he was getting rid of his go kart because he doesn’t have the time to restore it so I said I’d take it instead of the 40 dollars which he still gave me along with the 40 bucks because it was a lot of work I had did. I’m truly grateful because I’m actually living back home with my Mother and am out of work with no money. If you have your own company I’m a hard worker and I believe I’d be a positive asset to you and your company. My apologies for going off topic but I just need a job bud

I guess the engine needs some care too. The inside of the gas tank seems corroded.

Old Briggs eat rust. I bought a kid the same kart 20 yrs ago. After it ate the rust it's been happy ever since. I even changed the oil once. 😏
Man when you sandblasted and repainted the rims just to use the screw drivers to curb the lip drove me nuts. Anyways nice build!
I used to have a go-kart growing up and they drove it out to its dying day. this restoration was a nostalgia trip, thank you for the memories!
For those not aware..
Originally this type of a cart was called a "Go Boy Cart" which was a registered trade name for it.
Eventually, they were all commonly called "go cart"" from any manufacturer, even for a home built one of this same configuration.

Well, to increase chain tension the holes in the engine mount are customarily slotted lengthwise, and the engine was slid on its mount fore and aft to adjust chain tension.
It is rarely done by adjusting height with washers...

I’m literally working on one right now myself that I received from this guy for help him clean up his basement and as soon as he said he had one I told him I’d take it for the payment instead of cash in which he agreed with. Wow haha this go cart brings back memories. We had this exact style and version of this go cart as a little kid growing up and had many hrs of enjoyment. Only difference is we ran slicks vs the grips.

My grandpa built me my first go kart out of an old lawn tractor frame. He cut and welded and put a Briggs 5HP motor from a tiller. It looked very much like this thing. Bareboned with nothing extra. I must have put 100,000 miles on that thing! (that's what it felt like) He made me fix it when I broke it so I could learn. The brake was from a bicycle and simply put friction on the drive shaft. I had to change the rubber pads once a week. Every bike I could find was stipped of parts. Great memories and it taught me a ton about how things worked.
I'm building one the same way from the frame and rear axle of an ancient riding mower I found at the dump. I can't weld and don't have a welder, so I have to bolt everything together. It's EXTREMELY janky, rusty, and ugly, but I have ZERO dollars in it! All garbage dump parts. It'll just have a friction brake on the rear tires, and I expect it to do maybe 15mph in the yard 😂.
Well done. Brings back memories of my go cart from the early 1980's. Rebuilt my motor several times (before it finally gave up for good).

Growing up , we built all kinds of stuff from gokarts to long tube stingray bikes. Probably everything we made would be outlawed by the pc handwringers today. God bless those earlier days where kids could have FUN.
Yeah, cranks, weenies, whiners, lawyers, litigious types, and moms have taken the fun out of everything.
Should have resto-modded it by adding a bearing to the steering. That grinding action was like fingernails on a chalkboard.

I use to have one of these. Exactly like this. It's really crazy how exact mine was to this. It makes me wonder if was the one I had. 😂. They are not comfortable to ride with no shocks it beats you around pretty good unless you're on asphalt. But it was fun.

Hopefully you caught it already but the pedals are on backward from how you took them off. The small limiter tabs are now facing inboard, not over the frame as they were.

And I also believe that the front tie rod should not be bent

As well as adding all the new washers to the bolts, nyloc nuts would have been a better choice too, less chance of becoming loose from all the vibrations.
Lock washers do the same thing.
We had three of these and a mini bike all with 5 hp B&S's they were all DEATH TRAPS,...so much fun in the 70-80's. One wheel peel, one wheel brake pad (on the rubber tire), no seat belt (only chance to survive was to be thrown from these things), to shut of the engine you had to reach to the spark plug and flip a piece of metal onto it to ground the plug(sometimes you got a shock). Some injuries ,but nobody ever died,....even though it felt like it.

You can take the air quotes off "restoring" - just because you got lucky with a good motor and fuel system doesn't make it less so - that thing was a piece of crap before you got to it. Maybe you can redo the gas tank and mechanicals in another episode if you want. Great work!!!!!

could easily widen the front end if ya wanted and probly off road friendly tires with low pressure... but that thing was janky even when it was new i think..
OMG! I remember driving one that looked like this as a kid! Wanted one of these so bad growing up! I would have preferred the original steering wheel with the horn (I loved beeping at my buddies when riding around) but I do dig that push-start!

Interesting resto. Just curious; is the inside of the fuel tank the color of rust on purpose (45:36)? What will prevent dirt and water from getting into to foam cushion at the underside between the cushion and frame? Possibly use zip-ties rather than tape to keep wires in place.The tape will fail quickly in a hot, dusty environment.

It's a go cart I don't know what you expect, it's not likely going to be on dirt all that much especially when you look at the design this is clearly a road go cart
i think thats no rust but a sponge, that prevents the fuel from "shaking" (?)
Great job. Regarding the homemade rust preventative paint, might I recommend a cold galvanizing compound like Zinc-It? It's probably as effective and easier than mixing.

That was a strange frame, mostly bolted together rather than welded. An old kit of some kind maybe? Also that fermented tire sealer was nasty, I'm a tire tech by trade I know exactly what that smelled like! Gross indeed.

Ya must have run out of primer paint when I come to the important parts of the restoration. Near as I can remember, paint won’t stick long to bare metal. 😏
Rust-Oleum oil base enamel will stick just fine to bare metal. Once you give it a few months to completely dry that is.....
I've gone from sitting on a quarter panel adjusting a distributor on a V8 to baking a casserole in the kitchen but NEVER from motor to sewing machine. I have obviously missed out.
When we were kids my buddy had a go cart that was almost identical to this one. The biggest problem we had was the steering, and it seems to always be breaking.

I though about adding a bearing for the steering but couldn't think of a good way to do it and this go kart didn't deserve it. Also the engine video is coming soon

When you added a wheel spacer to make more clearance for the clutch, shouldn't you have done it to both sides, for balance?

Mounting those tires was a lot harder than it looks but yeah. At least they hold air now

This was a really comprehensive restoration of that old go kart. definitely great attention to detail, but while you were making such an effort. you should made some upgrades to that old go kart. like putting a live axle, and maybe a series thirty CVT system, and better brakes on it. you would have had a much more fun go kart in the end.

A 1977 Murray XRZ3 low flyer. Damn seeing that brings back sum high speed memories. I remember being pulled over on mine at 8 years old far going 78 miles per hour on my lil red go kart from hell.

First of your videos to pop up in my suggested views and it was like someone from my past suggested it. My brother and I had that same type of go-kart and we loved driving the wheels off of that thing. Same red paint and engine as ours. Talk about a time warp.
