“S” on the switch is for SIDE LIGHTS (only)
“C” for CONVOY is for ALL lights to be extinguished (even when the brakes are applied...and the brake lights DO NOT ILLUMINATE. This is for night time driving when (amongst many things..like tactical driving) you don’t want to illuminate yourself by lighting up an area with your tail lights! Also with Convoy selected only a small white light illuminates and shines onto the rear differential housing (which is painted white) with CONVOY selected. This is for other drivers and commanders to see (your) vehicle when they are driving behind you in darkness and in (old school times) not wearing night vision equipment.
Try it Jay...and try following JUST a CONVOY light on an area you don’t know...knackered and straining your eyes to see IF the vehicle in front is still moving, slowed down...or even bloody stopped...and that in the summer/dry with the vehicle(s) dust being kicked up and making the light as milky at night as that wing mirror you were talking about....I DARE YOU..CROSS COUNTRY of course!
In fact..why not ask the British Army to take you on one of their exercises on Salisbury Plain...I am quite sure they would oblige you

Well, Jay, you asked for info.....
The Wolf is an even more utilitarian vehicle than a "civilian" one. Heavier, heavy duty suspension, off road tyres etc. Look up the Armed services rally team for an idea of how they can go..
Any old landrover requires old style maintenance, given that, they can be reliable, and more than that, they can be bodged to get you home even with fairly major bits broken. My 1991 225k miles example gets thrashed to death and has only come home on a flatbed twice, and one of them was because it got rolled, then drove 10 miles to get to the recovery wagon.
The 200 and 300 series engines are turbo-intercooled diesels, that will run on jet fuel, paraffin, veg oil, or diesel, if you want. They are as close to bullet-proof as anything gets, they are slow and coarse, but with one solitary wire to the fuel solenoid, so long as you can turn the engine over, it will run. Later versions got quieter, smoother engines, at the cost of complication.
Go do an off road version of a track day at a pay and play site and you may find the Landy worming it's way (noisily) into your heart..
i was convinced wolfs didn't have the turbos, with the tdi ones anyway. Always liked how the wolfs were so "take that off, it could break!"... series doors style doors with sliding windows (top halves appearing to have been removed on this one), no bonnet release cable, all that stuff

The Convoy switch turns a light on the underside of the vehicle which illuminates a lightly painted axle/diff. This can be seen by the vehicle following but not from the air.✈

It should also, if memory serves, turn off your exterior lights. So you can drive tactically. The only exterior light being the tiny white light shining in the rear dif for the benefit of the following vehicle. (For example it stops your break lights going on and giving the game away).
@@JayEmmOnCars correct. it also stops the break lights and interior lights from working. To be used at night in tactical situations. you would all be driving in "convoy mode" effectively following a the vehicle in front with a small light shining on their rear diff. As their break lights wouldn't operate it was a recipe for disaster if you drove too close, especially when fatigued. you could follow the small convoy light for hours and could easily get hypnotized from it and fall asleep at the wheel.
Just commented elsewhere my dad had an ex army one. I remember that having the switch. It was a 1979 Series III ex signals.
Even had the army handbook with it including sections on how to prevent its use by the enemy if it had to be abandoned.

Defender reliability is a direct reflection on how you own and operate it, along with if you buy cheap parts or nice ones. Provided that you don't ignore it letting you know it's not happy about something - you usually get given plenty of warning if you're paying attention - they're fine. Let it go at it's own speed and they quite happily run for ages without notable problems, but it is a very old design.
Exactly, people buy these (and Discovery's old and new) thinking they're a new Corsa or fiesta, they're not, they are a specialist vehicle that need proper servicing, most problems are due to owner neglect, parts, even decent ones are cheap and plentyful and everything can be done up your path with basic tools, they were built to do a job and they do it pretty well if serviced properly. Try owning a VW tuareg if you want comfort, just don't moan when the prop centre bearing goes and it's over £1000 for a new prop.
Finally someone who understands them insteads of spoilt drivers who compare them to modern vehicles

I had many a days during my military career behind the wheel of a Wolf Land Rover and it's the best 4x4 by far. Never let me down and it goes where you point it's nose. I would love to own one one day. Even the German Bundeswehr with their Mercedes G-wagons loved the Wolf because it out performed their wagons especially in the mud. I had to recover one of their wagons back in germany with a Wolf. Best day ever. People slate Land Rovers so much but they are the 4x4's with the biggest personality and caracter...something that's hard to find...and if you look after a Landy..it will lool after you.👍👍
For having owned both a One Ten and a G-Wagen after leaving the army, you either have a limited knowledge of the G-Wagen, or that German driver, the G-Wagen outperforms any Land Rover. Ask the Aussies …
I want to point out, I was chatting to military guys recently, #1 he was a mechanic and when I mentioned my love tfor the 110, he started to get angry, with the returning frustrations caused while trying to fix the 110's in the fleet, in the field.
Then we went on to talk about the G-wagons, while they are certainly more modern and very capable, they simply have too much electronics to serve well in a military environment. Naturally the military version of said cars are both far from the production/civilian versions, the G-Wagons are known to break down often due to stupid electronic things that can't be recified in the field. Where as the LandRovers of the past were certainly able to be fixed to a stage of drivable, I've seen a 4 cylinder engine spit out 2 pistons from the engine block, but still able to get home. Yes it impressed me too.. @@esr243
Got enough knowledge about both to know that the military g wagon is not up to par with a wolf Land Rover. If a bunch german soldiers hate their own machines and fancy a wolf that much then it speaks volumes. I grew up with Land Rovers and they go everywhere and get you home. But each to their own i suppose. 😁

Spent 12 years in the army avoiding the damn things! We always tried to locally source hilux’s or shoguns instead.
IIRC WOLF stands for (Spare) Wheel On Left Flank.
Convoy light turns off all lights except a little light ( with the same lumin’s as a half dead glow worm) just above the diff casing, which was painted white. The theory was while blacked out at night you could follow the vehicle in front from the glow of the diff cover, but if you were close enough to see it you’d probably already rear ended it.
The painting was usually done on punishment duties and you could always find a phallic looking patch as boredom set in.

I was in the army too definitely didn't try avoiding them i always loved jumping behind the wheel of a landie i just love em so much, call me mad or sick, but i dont care cos they'll always have a special place in my heart 😁
All the best Defenders are hand painted. I mistakenly jet washed a 90 using a pressure washer designed for a tank. Once the mist had cleared I saw big circular swirls of bare aluminum all over the wagon. “Oh shit” I thought. An RAF MT Tech saw me frowning at it and handed me some green IR paint and a brush. “Wait till it dries mate then give it a few coats”

As a defender owner I have to agree that it is slow, loud, cramped and uncomfortable. But having owned mine for eight years it has only needed some minor repair work. And I wouldn’t have anything else for chasing cattle over the hills, or rescuing a poorly sheep from the middle of nowhere.
I have a 95 ex army Tithonus soft top. Ditched the slow Smokey diesel and I’ve stuck a 3.9 V8 with a big American carb, loud exhaust and fat tyres. It’s great fun, love it.
To clear this up before 50 commenters tell you that Wolf stands for (spare) Wheel On Left Flank (as opposed to bonnet-mounted as per usual military Landy), its urban-myth guff. The MOD has a long practice of naming wheeled vehicles after animals (eg Fox, Ferret, Coyote) and Wolf just formed part of that chain.
Besides, how would it make sense on LHD versions where the spare is on the right. Would have been a Worf.
Wolf does not mean wheel on left flank, it is reference to a sheep in wolf clothing during the planning phase by LR.
The Defender is i think, much like our Queen. Old, desperately out of date, perhaps even a little incontinent, but also incredibly charming and loveable. As British as Tea and Biscuits, and woven into the very fabric our automotive history for the last 60 years. Rubbish yes, but brilliant too!

People laugh when I say the Defender is my dream car, but it truly is and I believe it always will be it just has a special place in my heart, hopefully going to be my first car 🤞🏼

Drove one for years in Canada, Kosovo, Iraq and the uk. no complaints on reliability. only the one time the clutch went in the middle of Basra. The other time a bolt from the prop-shaft shot through the cab but that was due to someone putting graphite grease into the prop-shaft greasing nipple.
Noted: do not put graphite grease on nipples or they will shut up.

Wow! I never thought Jayem would ever be tempted into a Defender again. Our Family have owned a Series 2A, a Series 3 and a 110 County when we lived in West Africa and I just love them. With the 110 County (now called a Defender) it was head and shoulders above the leaf sprung competition at the time. You could travel the awful roads between cities at speed, with the car floating along with the long travel suspension dancing beneath.

Love my Wolf unlike the sports cars i have owned, helps me hang on to my license in this clamp down on fun society.
This isn't a normal Wolf, it's a version called Tethys and usually carried a hose reel in the rear bed, most Wolf were either hard top ffr or full length soft top GS variants.

The 300 tdi was the most powerful of the mechanical 2.5 diesel that was fitted to the defender I.e The 2.5 N/A (12j), 2.5 turbo (19j) and the 200 Tdi. It was also the last fully mechanical Diesel engine fitted to the defender as the TD5 and the ZSD engines required an engine management system to run. The 300 tdi made a total of 111hp and 264nm. The 300 tdi was also one of the first diesel to be equipped (depending) with Exhaust Gas Recirculation in the land Rover line up. 300 tdi's were also mated mostly to R380 gearbox being the strongest gearbox that the defender had at the time over the LT77 and LT85.

Convoy mode is a system the military use which turns a light at the back of the vehicle on.. it allows a full convoy to travel in the dark with their headlights off so they can see the vehicle Infront without giving themselves away
Absolutely love mine, cruises comfortably at 70 all day long, no mechanical problems. Drove form Nice to Paris in 12 hours, no problem.

I agree they are dreadful things. I've driven them in the army for 24 years and anyone that can get hold of literally anything else, mostly Japanese pickups, does so. When JLR finally stopped producing them I danced a jig!
I learned to drive in one of these😂 engine used to vibrate the mirrors to point at the ground when idling. Had to keep asking the colonel testing me for permission to re adjust them. Loved driving it though

Since went back to Land Rovers ten years ago, I have not been done for speeding, and have no points, considering what I was paying in fines, my ex MOD 110 has paid for itself in ten years... Now I will get caught tomorrow...

My dad used to have a 1979 long wheel base ex army Series III. Was an ex signals one. 24v electrics, mad dials still fitted, extra high heavy duty suspension. Bonkers thing.
@@sparky4878 I've actually changed the heavy duty suspension that mine came with to lighter duty 110 suspension (hard top to station wagon) which is the opposite of what most people do!

Back in the sixties I was driving a land rover 110 on a grouses moor at a shoot I was also given the new range rover to drive and it was a revaltion😃. ...need I say more...but I do understand we had a 110 land rover on our farm built for a purpose...and brilliant ...

The only experience I have of Defenders was when they were called Land Rovers back in the late 70s, early 80s. I worked weekends on a farm and had to drive theirs on occasion. The gearstick just seemed to go round in a big circle and it was anyone's guess what gear you'd selected. Being a farm vehicle, it was full of all sorts of crap - baler twine, sheep dip, knackered hammers, several species of shit, hay, straw, dead lambs, huge animal syringes, leaky paint tins, nails... the list was endless. It was good fun when you were fifteen though.
I note way back you featured a Beetle(convertible)so that's the German icon box ticked, you've covered the British icon now. So when can we expect to see you in a 2CV.

When I’m in a cheeky mood, I like to park wonky and trying for him to reverse out in my daily 95 xj next to a chap who uses a Dyane as a daily. Only cos he used to laugh at my little c4 and my interest in citroëns a few years back. But it’s all in jest 😀
The Wolf is the military equivalent of the Hi-Cap, which was first launched in the form of a Series III 109-inch to compete with the current generation of cheap pickup trucks from Japan. More specifically, Toyota.
We have convoy mode on our refueler trucks and land rovers in the raf. It disables all the exterior and interior lights apart from the number plate light or a small light above the rear differential . Allowing vehicles to convoy in near absolute darkness by simply following the vehicle in front very closely through any terrain
Something a bit different, nice. 👍 Only issue I had was that I had to use the subtitles to watch due to having to wear ear defenders (no pun intended). The combination of the wind noise and that shirt turned the vid into a Health and Safety nightmare!😉
I think it's an all too frequent mistake to compare a Land Rover with any other "car", for there simply is no comparison. A tool for a job and a very "vintage" experience, from the drive to the maintenance. Not a vehicle for stressed out up -tight office types, they suit those who do things differently. You can arrive anywhere in an old Landy too, totally unpretentious and a much loved part of the fabric of this nation.

That’s the Crow Rd from Lennoxtown to Fintry, with various shots at different sections going both ways. Nice road to drive but there are nicer ones not too far away 😉

JayEmm, you weren’t far away from what’s known as ‘Top of the World’. Next time you’re in the area, drive over the Crow Rd, through Fintry and turn right onto the B822 (road to Kippen). It’s a great driving road. Top of the world is the scenic spot where the road turns left downhill towards Arnprior. New tarmac a few years back, so in fairly good condition.
Had to sign for one of these, down to every nut n bolt when I was a soldier.
It spends more time getting serviced than driven🤬😆
The convoy switch should disable the headlights and activate a light underneath for a vehicle behind to follow in the dark, no lights.

Wolf version is one of the best defender’s you can get. Higher spec version. Not many of them about.

I think the military variants have low ratio transfer box gearing to allow for more towing weight or load capacity, hence only 50mph. Really these days they are only ideal for Sunday drive to the local for lunch..
Convoy mode switches off all the lights except a little light which shines on the white painted rear diff so in a convoy you don't crash into the guys in front but are stealthy for night raids etc.
The jury is out for me on me on most defenders too. Some mates have got them and the only ones i've been in that are any good have been heavily modified with engine swaps OR a Wolf! The wolf is a totally different beasty, everything that was not needed and could go wrong was binned. The electrics were bespoke and 24volt, as was most of the chassis which is much beefier and the diffs, and the transfer box. They also kept the old TDI engine which is genuinely reliable and far more so than the td5.
The land rover with the least chance of going wrong is a wolf! My uncle owns the same one that took him to Baghdad in 2003 and its second only to his kids on the priority list! It lives a tough life in the peak district but has never gone wrong, save a bit of welding in the normal chassis spots. Being a chunkier chassis though it takes longer to become a problem which isn't ideal I guess is better than the standard!
Also the high, side mount spare wheels look awesome...

The convoy lights will switch all the driving lights off and the other setting will shine a small light onto the rear diff so that it can be followed in convoy, I really must get out more but as I spent all my working life in the army, that is my excuse.
I love the fact that you drove all over the roads that I grew up driving on. Some of the best roads ever.
Ripped that car to bits was also quite entertaining - no point trying to polish a turd as they say.
When you turn convoy mode on there should be a light turn on in the rear that the guy behind you follows. It has shielding either side and on top so the light can't be seen form the sides at range, so the enemy can't see you. Usually it's a red light but on the Defender it might be a different colour. Armoured vehicles have the same light but they differ sometimes from vehicle to vehicle.
And more importantly, it cuts the power to the brake/stop lights etc.
Agree with you - I last drove on of these in the Aberdares in Kenya in 1983 - it was uncomfortable and primitive then.
In contrast a Mercedes Benz Unimog truck I drove in the same year, time and place was vastly more comfortable and sophisticated, better off road other than that it was bigger

You seem to mistaking the defender for a road vehicle. All army vehicles are in at least part hand painted, it’s call patch painting.

MOD Sales (Witham Specialist Vehicles) usually has some Wolf 90s for sale. Wolf 110s are generally only released after write-off accidents. The army has mostly sold off its pre-Wolf Landys so Wolfs coming up regularly since about 2016. Not cheap though, £15k for a good ones.

If you park it up after you've warmed the engine up and no oil leaks out, take it back to where you bought it from because it's not a Land Rover.
To me, the best is a 90 natural aspirated Diesel Land Rover from 1986, very slow but very reliable. Mine did over 45,000
Miles without a single breakdown...it already had at least 58,000 KM before I changed the Speedo to mph.
One very good point about them...Parked at the side of the road near a school, kids come along with implements to scratch every car but when they got to me airstreams from screaming they ran it terror at the sight of a big standard ex mod landy! Bliss.
Come on, J, that thing is a joy....in the war, a long time ago,i had to drive a military Defender with a bulletproof glass and with a 2.5 BMW engine...that thing was a scary experience, that was a disgusting slow, stinky, heavy vehicle...but it was capable....sometimes

The old V8 ones are really rare and sought after - Makes you wonder why they never continued to make it with a better petrol engine.
You should try to test one from Nene Overland with the 6.2 Corvette LS V8 in it.
Probably because petrol engines don't like wet or damp unless the ignition systems are sealed up, a diesel will run submersed as long as it can get air through a snorkel.
I've always wanted to drive one of the armoured Land Rovers they use/used in Northern Ireland. I always loved the look of those, often seen tearing round the streets being pelted with petrol bombs and lumps of concrete. I think the police in Northern Ireland still use them?
Usually a selection of the “Snatch” models you’re referring to, released for public use, via MOD Sales (Witham Specialist Vehicles). They’re absolutely horrible to drive, even compared to a normal Landy, but one can be yours for anything between £15k and £30k.

@@davekennedy6315 Who ever told you that was actually spot on. when they changed to composite armour they got a little less bad , but all in all woeful .
The army had to restrict the performance of these before letting squaddies loose in them, the army being the army decided the best way was to screw a bolt on to the throttle pedal so you couldn’t push it all the way to the floor.🙄🙄 what do you think was the average squaddies response to this bolt? Yep, they had to weld the bolts in place.
Doug DeMuro bought a '97 Defender for $70k in the US and he stated it's his most favourite car he's ever owned. Each to their own.
Ok so great off-road but f*** me as kids we hated the landy of my mates dads driving up the road to Scotland...at 45mph with that distinctive tyre noise...hated it...and yet also weirdly loved it for its memories and walks and adventures too...hate/love hahahahaha🤔😂. Never buy one mind you!

As the original owner of what was once a new 1963 Land Rover Series iia, I can understand your despising the Defender. It is the same vehicle as the Series, with “modern” modifications. I laugh when I see the dash vents on the Defenders still exist in the sheet metal, but are non-functional.
Take the Series for what it was back in its day, and you will better appreciate its design, ride, and use. Look at the Defender as a great way to not improve much on that design, but make some big money. Imagine building a car from manufacturing machines that basically need no change for 60 years?
I see the NEW Defender as a real vehicle designed with the better parts of the Series retained (with the exception of its simplicity) . Can’t wait to drive one myself.

We have one as a work truck and it's horrible. I've got friends who have Defenders and they think they're the most amazing cars in the world. For such a massive car there is no room whatsoever inside. Ride is awful, it's slow, and not a year goes by without something serious go wrong with it.
Your car would be a ford F350 you say you get the land rover but you just don't you don't understand far from it it's a car you just feel. you need to be a real gentleman and be rough and ready to understand them and what they are about

But is it even a car? Was it ever meant to be a car? Do those that adore them even care what others think? No to all of the above.
However, if you want to carry four 25l water containers over flooded farm land in the rain up fairly steep hills for about three miles, the Land Rover does pretty well. So, in my sixty years on this planet, I had the ideal job for a Land Rover once, for about two hours. The rest of that day I truly hated the damn thing. I did learn to drive in one though so I suppose I should be a little less harsh on them. Maybe.
If I had a pound for every person I've talked out of buying a defender over the years I could probably buy one and simply lend it to people and save my breath.

yeah...your obvious decision to wear that shirt in public should've told me everything I need to know about your taste or more to the point lack thereof in vehicles.. Now this is on me because I willingly wasted 12 minutes of my life not learning about what separates this LR90 from a typical defender other than that it's a milspec vehicle.. which any person who isn't colorblind or at least wasn't before they looked at your hideous shirt could probably deduce from the olive drab paint...but rather 12 minutes learning that you only sort of tolerate it... thanks a heap clarkson light. well...off to the rest of youtube to maybe find out something actually useful and informative about the LR90 wolf edition
Ive had the privilege of driving one round scotland for a week and it definitely wasn't as bad as the hating key board warriors would have you believe and the 300tdi isnt unreliable, people forget just how old these vehicles are and compare the driving experience of them to modern vehicles which lets be honest are boring and comparable to white goods like a washing machine or a fridge 😂

It is a wolf, special version that carried a large hose real in the rear bed , most were converted from the special 'Spice' type Wolf. They also did the same to the earlier Tithonus.
