  • Cantaloupes: the sweet taste of summer! And for cantaloupe grower Bruce Frasier, they're also a sweet family legacy. They've been growing cantaloupes for generations in Carrizo Springs.

Oh what I wouldn't give to have a Texas grown cantelope. Wish you could ship them to Ohio.

How hot is good for cantaloupe? I'm also in the desert and trying to grow it, but no fruit so far. Planted it in later June, from seed in the ground. We've had triple digits and I do have a 40% shade cloth over it. I dug holes in the soil and put water bottles upside down to water the roots.

I live in Texas. April 2024 is the first time I've planted cantaloupe in my garden. I started the seedlings in homemade starter pots (from a cantaloupe that I bought from the grocery store) and then planted them into my raised bed. 90 days later (in July), I have 6 cantaloupes that are almost ready to be harvested. Texas has hot, extended summers in the upper 90's; which is ideal for growing cantaloupe.

@@sage7x7 Thanks for the reply and information. I am in the desert where lit gets into the 100’s. Today it might have been 109.

Operations like this attract rodents. Rodents host ticks and attract pit vipers. Barn Owl nest boxes could be useful and protect harvesters from harm.

It is unclear if any repellant for rodents was used. The video doesn't indicate whether or not any was used. We do know that whatever they are doing, they are successful. It doesn't appear the harvesters were under threat of harm, like "pit vipers"?. The harvesters appear to be in a pleasant mood and happy working for a living.
