Cool. I live 10 miles from the factory and proudly own a set of Coax speakers. You are correct about the amplifier: Having more powerful electronics will bring the Piega's to life. I highly recommend reviewing the Piega MLS-3. They are not from this world...

Really would wish them to make a grill for the mid/tweeter only as those drivers are super sensitive at cost a LOT to replace(they need the complete speaker to switch mid/tweeter drivers). And that's because they look like church speakers with the grill on.

Very thorough and spot on description of the Piega Coax 511 speakers. I've got the Piega Coax 511 paired with a Marantz PM-10 amplifier and Marantz SA-10 SACD-player/DAC. These Piega beauties simply show me everything, good or bad, in a recording. They are utterly and ruthlessly revealing. Not party speakers, obviously, but very engaging and insightful transducers. In my experience, the Piega Coax 511's soundstage, image precision and bass response improves vastly once the speaker is mounted onto IsoAcoustics Gaia II feet instead of the supplied Piega spikes or feet. Also, that unique Piega coaxial driver needs at least 250 hours of "burn in" to release all of its potential. I hope your review samples were well warmed up prior to this review, Terry.

Hello, I wanted to ask since you own them, do these speakers need ample space to breath. I want to place them in a very tight corner in my living room and not sure how that would affect the sound since they are a sealed enclosure design. Also, are you happy with them? Thanks!

    • @andersladsholm81

@@DDSRacer01 Hello, Yes, I am very satisfied with my PIEGA Coax 511 speakers. They sound divine when set up properly and when matched with the right equipment!
However, I do think it requires quite a bit of trial & error to set them up optimally. In order to get them to show you the most three-dimensional sound-image possible you really need to let them breathe. Even if they don't have a back-firing bassreflex port they will still need space to the rear and to the sides to deliver the most natural and balanced bass response. Placing them less than 25 inches from any corner the bass response will be very exxagerated.
Also, I'd say that the PIEGA Coax 511 speakers should be positioned no less than 25 inches from the rear wall (measured to the front of each speaker). Placing the speakers even closer to the rear wall will probably make the stereo image less 3D, less precise.
NB! Even though these babies are quite small-ish compared to many other 3-way floorstanders they still have a comparaply very capaple bass output. Try them out in a shop and you will be so surprised with their bass delivery! They will give you extremely well controlled, fast and accurate bass. The amount of bass that they can produce almost seems to contravene the laws of physics - the PIEGA Coax 511 speakers actually sound much bigger than they look since they have such a large membrane cross section area in the lower registers.
Most important note: Always pair these speakers with a high quality amplifier (the more watts, the more these speakers will shine), high quality speaker cables (preferably copper - NOT silver plated copper) and high quality interconnect cables. In my experince the PIEGA Coax 511 speakers sound far better bi-wired than single-wired.
By the way...I'm presently using Albedo Metamorphosis silver interconnects and Inakustik Referenz LS-4004 Air speaker cables as well as Tellurium Q Statement interconnects and Tellurium Q Statement speaker cables in a double barrel shotgun setup (= two runs of speaker cables per speaker).

These speakers fascinate me, esp the coax ribbon mid/tweeter. Unfortunately I really don't care for them aesthetically, don't care for the aluminum construction.

I pretty much had the same prejudice prior to demo'ing them at my local hifi-shop. Actually the aluminium cabinets don't look the slightest metallic or cold once you "meet" them. In high gloss white or high gloss black lacquer they are the most delicately looking, feminine shaped speakers. And they feel kind of soft and organic as well. Also, you can combine a white or silver pair of speakers with black front covers to make them look more like organ pipes if you fancy. They are quite wife-appealing and discrete appearing speakers compaired to many other "guys only"-speakers out there that often seem to resemble props from a Star Wars-film.

Terry, do yourself a big favour sometime: do try out a pair of Piega Coax 711. The bass power from those babies will shake the bedrock under your house. They are in a completely different league. Those four 22cm/8" woofers can move a serious amount of air. Play them loudly and you'll need to rebuild the masonry of your house afterwards. I mean, they can start an earthquake even though they are very linear all the way through the frequency range. Massive sound pressure and unparalleled dynamics combined with even more detailed sound than that of the Coax 511.

For me the looks of a speaker are just as important as the sound and I much prefer the looks of the KEF reference 3 to these. I'm a huge fan of the good old wood finish so these wouldn't get a look in for me as I feel they look so cold and a bit bland. I also feel judging by the way you have described the sound of these speaker's I would again choose the likes of the Wharfdale Elysium over these. Interesting review of an interesting speaker but not for me.

I think at their £11,000 price point they will get bested on pure sound quality grounds, by final audio's new model range of electrostatic loudspeakers. Starting with the hybrids, the model 3 hybrid for £3000, model 5 hybrid £4,000, model 7 at £6,000. Then there are the model 12, and model 15. They can be passive or active driven. This new range will be more transparent and open than any standard loudspeaker range at their cost and above. One of these models is the first place I would start to look at upgrading from my own sealed cabinet monitor audio gold reference GR20 2.5 way floor standers. I would also take a listen to atc's active 3 way monitors loudspeakers, to see between final audio's new esl range passive and active, and atc's 3 way active loudspeakers to see between these two particular brand range of loudspeakers which are the most revealing, transparent, open and detailed between them. Had my sealed cabinet GR20's for quite a long time now, but they are very revealing, detailed, open and explicitly transparent within their 30hz to 30khz capabilities to source and amplification, but sound very balanced within their frequency range as long as source and amplification is up to the task at hand. They have a more detailed open and revealing explicit quality than kefs range of loudspeakers do. They certainly let you hear every very tiny little subtleties and inflections, and the changes of sound between any differences of any cables, amplification, and source components you try, use, and prefer to your taste, and as to how actually good your audio equipment chain is as reguards transparency levels and extraction of signal detail been able to hear if your components are loosing less of the detailed information of the audio signal detail as is possible coming in through the audio chain through to the end output of the loudspeakers. I always have them biamped, or would have them quad monoblocked, but have not found any yet, as detailed and as open and revealing and colourless, ( for the highest performing detailed and resolving highest quality sourced digital and streaming component sources components ), as my late mid 90's avi s2000mi biamped amplification, and you certainly get the emotional content with dynamics with absolutely zero ear fatigue because the amplifiers have extremely low distortion of 0.003% from zero watts to the first 50 watts of their initial power output at the important low level resolution level distortions at low volume levels, as well as at the higher volume levels. The best low distortion levels for any of the very best current transformer powered analogue amplification is 0.002 %, for example like the atc p1 power amplifier, which uses 4 output mosfets per each channel, two for each half phase of the signal in and out. My extremely compact twin transformer powered amplifiers with extremely very short signal path with also ample heatsinking which is the tops of the amplifier casing, have just 1 very large sanken output transistor for each half phase of the signal, and each sanken output device has its own heatsinked driver transistor. So the amplifiers are held constantly balanced in push pull mode to the signal. The signal goes in via vacuum sealed gas filled gold relay reeds. Because the signal path from input to output is so very short and direct, and with only one large transistor for each half phase of the signal in constantly held balanced in pushpull mode while also having extremely low distortion even at the lowest signal levels and with very low self noise, the amplifiers are very transparent, revealing, detailed, dynamic, smooth and non fatigue, as long as the digital source component has very low distortions, very low self noise, and equally very short and direct signal path input to output. You get to hear more detailed signal information with less of the loss of the signal information from a recording as long as the digital component is also up to the same kind of high standards of very very short signal path, with extremely low distortions and extremely low self noise levels . But you equally hear how really bad those bad sounding and compressed and distorted recordings sound, but without ear fatigue, as long as the digital component has near zero distortion figures to three decimal places, 0.00012 etc for example, you get idea of then what I am talking about. Any kind of ear fatigue what so ever at all that is felt upon your very delicate hearing abilities at any non deafening and threatening deafness sound levels in any so called proper audio system or audio monitor system, is caused by the bad old adversary to your hearing called distortion. Any bad and ear fatiguing poor amount of it delivered from your combined audio system from the source, amplification, or the loudspeakers themselves, can be caused by just one component or the whole audio chain of combined source, amplification, and loudspeakers. So any signs at all of any uncomfortable ear fatigue stress of any kind from your beloved audio system, is a sign your audio system is just not up to the very high task and standards it needs to be to give you a pain free sound quality performance experience it needs to be at any volume sound level you want to listen to it at.

£11k is bonkers money though, isn't it?
Especially when it remains to be seen what sort of longevity you'd get out of the ribbons in these speakers...
Sealed box speakers really come into their own with much larger woofers. Like 12" as a minimum. But then you need the right sort of house / room for that type of speaker...

2 I'm aiming to spend under £x (eg £2k) to get world class speakers, although there will be convenience compromises in acheiving this
