I’m planning to do my Sec+ exam by the end of September this year. Last week I barely passed my network+. It was quite overwhelming as I didn’t think I was going to make it, but I scored enough points to pass, thankfully. Assuming Sec+ might be harder I’m giving myself a little more time to prepare for it.

No offense, but every time I hear people making videos with a similar title, 9 out 10 times they already are working in the IT field or have a degree in IT. It's very misleading.
I just finished the bootcamp offered by NYU and ThriveDx. But imma still getting these books to reinforce what I learnt in the program cause I don't think im ready to give the exam right away. Nervous but excited to jump in this field. Is all new for me. Thank you for the guiding.
Also, dont just skip the questions but give your best answer and flag them for review later. The danger of just skipping them is that you might forget or not have enough time especially if youre saving the PBQs for last and youre hung up on the PBQs
For the people planning on taking the Sec+. Please take your time it covers a vast amount of information and is best if you spend 2-3 months to learn and most importantly retain newly acquired information.

I started with a major in computer science, I didnt know much about it and I thought it would be fun. I soon realized I didnt like it because it focus on something that I have very little interest. Cybersecurity is something I was looking for, because i like to learn how to hack and protect from cyber attacks. But as like computer science, I have very little knowledge of it. I wonder if there is an way I could gain experience or maybe a job?
I would highly recommend CTF sites like Hack the Box and Try Hack Me! They are very practical and provide lots of hands on experience whether you’re interested in blue team or red. Thanks for watching!!

It’s a smaller company so I wear a lot of different hats in terms of support and running the network. The benefit of that is getting the opportunity to work on a lot of different projects including the security of the business. I have worked in IT support, Helpdesk, and managed services where I worked with a lot of different clients and their networks. @@dominiquewilson Hi Dominique, if you have no prior technology experience at all, I would probably recommend CompTIA A+ first. But if doing the certs in a more intensive, one-shot fashion works best for you, I say go for it! Why not major in computer science. The competition is high. Most jobs will look over you for someone who have a bachelor's in computer science. Especially if you don't have experience. this advice is coming from someone who have a B.S in Computer Science.

Broke down different topics into sub topics like "Incident Response" into Incident Response Plan, IR Terms, IR Team, and etc. In order words, I cut information down into smaller bites that make up the whole steak itself. Then tackled the next topic. For the acronyms and terms, it was all just brute memorization using my own homemade-flash cards.
I gotta be honest, those are pretty hard to come by. I think it might just be due to how little instructors are allowed to divulge from the actual exam questions. Here is one resource that I used with a short sample of questions: cybr.com/courses/comptia-security-sy0-601-practice-exams/lessons/performance-based-questions-1/. I would also definitely recommend that Get Certified, Get Ahead book as listed in the video description. I think he does the best job of talking through real-life scenarios to apply the Security+ concepts. Hope that helps! Good luck with your studies!

Yes, absolutely. Web designer is a more creative role with a little bit of development work. I was working on Wordpress websites and graphics. Web developer usually means coding and either front-end or back-end development.
Hi Zak, thanks for the tips. I have a question. I have no experience in cyber security but I have been doing Application Performance for more than 5 years. I analyze CPU Utilization, memory usage, battery drainage on mobile devices, and fix the code in Java, SQL, php, JavaScript. I do lots and lots of load tests, capacity planning, stress tests for big eCommerce sites as well as Enterprise sites in AWS and Azure. Now I want to move to the Security domain. Will the Security+ certificate open the door for me into Cybersecurity job? Thanks!

Im an information systems student with cybersecurity as a Track, so basically I took “Fundamentals of Cybersecurity”, “Secure software development”, and “Security Risk Management, Governance, and Control”. Do you think after getting Bs on all of them makes me ready for the security plus exam?

Which certification would you recommend between the comptia security+, Google cybersecurity certificate and the EC-council certified cybersecurity technician?
I would definitely say the Security+ if only for the CompTIA name and brand recognition within the industry. The Google certification does look interesting especially since some of it appears to be project based and more hands on. But I think that it's just too new to tell if it carries any weight when trying to get a job. EC Council also looks interesting but I don't know too much about it. @@calvinrasefako I actually have never heard of that. Did a quick search and definitely seems to be a lot more focused on Endpoint and Network security so probably way more hands on than Security+. Definitely seems more suited to someone looking to focus on Blue Team hardening and defending of networks. Looks cool!
It all kind of depends. I'm not super familiar with the material on the Google cybersecurity certificate and it might very well cover all of the same material as the Security+. I don't have any IT background, but I would like to build the career in Cybersecurity, do you think if I study little bit longer than normal lets say 2 may be 3 months, will I be able to pass the exam and will I have minimum understanding to do smth in cybersecurity?
I definitely think that will be a reasonable amount of time for studying and hopefully passing the exam! But as far as a career, I would use the experience you gain from Security+ to look for an entry-level job in IT with the hopes of moving up and working in security in the future.

Most of that was due to there being lot's of different choices. I saved those until the end so the pressure was on in terms of making sure I completed everything before my time was up.

@@justine42050 If that's what you're gunning for and you already have that experience in a NOC role, I definitely think you're good to skip A+. The CompTIA suggested progression is A+ then Network+, then Security+ so you get your Sec+ and you're good to go! I think it also really comes down to the role you're interested in, A+ is a very base level, broad scope of IT knowledge. Nope, not at all. You have to have your webcam on the entire time and your computer is monitored by an exam proctor. You can’t even have anything on or around your desk! They are very strict about it when taking the exam from home. With good reason!

Well it sounds to me like you're perfectly prepped to find some awesome opportunities after graduation! Developers are highly sought after for cybersecurity and many people think development is one of the most important skills in order to succeed. It makes sense right? If you know how software and apps are built, it makes it that much easier to reverse engineer them and find their weaknesses. As far as certifications, you could definitely pursue some base level certs like the Security+ or if you're more interested in Pentesting, the eLearnSecurity eJPT. Look into the Try Hack Me and Hack the Box platforms as well for getting some hands-on learning. With a Master's in CS and a final project focused on cybersecurity, I definitely think you'll be able to find something after graduation. Hope this helps, I wish you the best of luck!! @@ZakJaeb I have passed the Network+, Security+, and Cloud+ since last Aug. 29th and earned those certifications and 2 professional certifications from Comptia. I do have over 30 years experience in IT though. I just never tried to get certified before. I am waiting for the result from the CYSA+ beta exam I took in November. That would net me another professional certification, as well. I am now studying for the Linux+, CCNA, and AWS Certified practitioner certifications. I use my many years of experience combined with brute force studying methods to pass.
You can get an entry level cybersecurity job. Once you start getting experience, you can then start apply for higher level jobs. If you have a security clearance or can find a employer willing to sponsor you for one, then you’ll be much more marketable at that point.

@@1dgrandson When you say those two certifications, what other certification from Comptia are you referring to? The Security+ is a Comptia cert. There are definitely jobs out there that will accept certifications. However, I would highly recommend trying to take on some personal projects that you can show as portfolio pieces as well. Especially if you don't have any prior experience at all. Most likely you'll be starting out in a more generalized IT Support/Administrator role where you'll get an opportunity to work on cybersecurity related projects. This can help you decide which avenue you want to focus on. SIX DAYS IF YOU ARE IN THE US ARMY! Everybody in the US Armed Forces that has an IT specialty takes a 5 day course and test out on SATURDAY! This is how I did for Network+ and Security+ back to back. So in the same month in 2 working weeks I came out with 2 certifications. As much as I will like to think I am a genius, I am not. They key... MOTIVATION and DISCIPLINE! If I tell you, you cant do your job without this piece of paper and you will be doing some low skilled work, you will rise to the occasion. CASP for officers is another one week course, the same with Ethical Hacker. ONE MONTH? That is a waste of a lifetime!!!
this person aint lying, i went in army for simliar job in IT, i was 25U (Signal Support System Specialist), i was jack of all trades in IT but master of none. The course you go through is seriously really accelerated and super fast, i know for a fact i barely made it through SEC+ because that shit was super DENSE with acronyms. You really gotta take your time and learn at your own pace and style. For most people i know they learn through video PLUS a book to go over a chapter you are most confused about, it seriously helps!

I would advice people to get their computer science degree , if you trying to become a developer or working in cyber security. If course, jobs will hire if you have the experience or certification. However, bachelor degree will definitely separate from those who have certification. My two cent. Coming from a software developer point of view.

Network Plus is harder than sec+. It goes in depth with networking which is a complex topic. I am sure you will find Sec+ more manageable

Broke down different topics into sub topics like "Incident Response" into Incident Response Plan, IR Terms, IR Team, and etc. In order words, I cut information down into smaller bites that make up the whole steak itself. Then tackled the next topic. For the acronyms and terms, it was all just brute memorization using my own homemade-flash cards.

Any Tips for Performance Based Questions, i can’t find ones to study that were like the exam.
I gotta be honest, those are pretty hard to come by. I think it might just be due to how little instructors are allowed to divulge from the actual exam questions. Here is one resource that I used with a short sample of questions: cybr.com/courses/comptia-security-sy0-601-practice-exams/lessons/performance-based-questions-1/.
I would also definitely recommend that Get Certified, Get Ahead book as listed in the video description. I think he does the best job of talking through real-life scenarios to apply the Security+ concepts.

Is a web designer different to a web developer? Surely web developers would not be earning 30k less than network admins?
Yes, absolutely. Web designer is a more creative role with a little bit of development work. I was working on Wordpress websites and graphics. Web developer usually means coding and either front-end or back-end development.

If you want to focus on Networking, CCNA is definitely the gold standard cert. It dives much deeper than event he Network+ and is a lot more hands on.
Hi Zak, thanks for the tips. I have a question. I have no experience in cyber security but I have been doing Application Performance for more than 5 years. I analyze CPU Utilization, memory usage, battery drainage on mobile devices, and fix the code in Java, SQL, php, JavaScript. I do lots and lots of load tests, capacity planning, stress tests for big eCommerce sites as well as Enterprise sites in AWS and Azure. Now I want to move to the Security domain. Will the Security+ certificate open the door for me into Cybersecurity job? Thanks!

The coding knowledge will also be a factor that can help you stand out from the crowd. It never hurts to have a few certifications under your belt, mixed with some practical knowledge. Im an information systems student with cybersecurity as a Track, so basically I took “Fundamentals of Cybersecurity”, “Secure software development”, and “Security Risk Management, Governance, and Control”.

Possibly, I think that as long as you go through the exam objectives and are able to check off most of them then you should be fine.
I think another option would be to take a look at the practice exam book that I linked in the description or find a free sample online. If you score well and feel like you know the acronyms and content then you'll do fine!

Which certification would you recommend between the comptia security+, Google cybersecurity certificate and the EC-council certified cybersecurity technician?
I would definitely say the Security+ if only for the CompTIA name and brand recognition within the industry.
The Google certification does look interesting especially since some of it appears to be project based and more hands on. But I think that it's just too new to tell if it carries any weight when trying to get a job.
EC Council also looks interesting but I don't know too much about it.
For now I would say that for a baseline security cert, Security+ is the way to go.

@@calvinrasefako I actually have never heard of that. Did a quick search and definitely seems to be a lot more focused on Endpoint and Network security so probably way more hands on than Security+. Definitely seems more suited to someone looking to focus on Blue Team hardening and defending of networks. Looks cool!
If i get the google cybersecurity certificate is security+ necessary ?
It all kind of depends. I'm not super familiar with the material on the Google cybersecurity certificate and it might very well cover all of the same material as the Security+. However, that cert is still very new and isn't as well recognized as the Sec+ from CompTIA. So for now, I would say go for the Security+.

I guess that depends, I personally like how Mike Chapple presented the content. But I know that many people swear by Prof. Messer and Mike Myers. I personally could never get past Mike Myers goofiness haha! But it works for some😂

I don't have any IT background, but I would like to build the career in Cybersecurity, do you think if I study little bit longer than normal lets say 2 may be 3 months, will I be able to pass the exam and will I have minimum understanding to do smth in cybersecurity?
I definitely think that will be a reasonable amount of time for studying and hopefully passing the exam! But as far as a career, I would use the experience you gain from Security+ to look for an entry-level job in IT with the hopes of moving up and working in security in the future.

Thank you!! And thanks for watching! I took my exam in the Fall of last year. The performance based questions were definitely the most difficult. Most of that was due to there being lot's of different choices. I saved those until the end so the pressure was on in terms of making sure I completed everything before my time was up.

Quick question, I have about 6 months of NOC Tech experience, basically help desk for the NOC, do you think I can skip A+? Or should I still I get it, I’m studying for Security+ now about 2 hours a day, hoping to take in about a month

@@justine42050 If that's what you're gunning for and you already have that experience in a NOC role, I definitely think you're good to skip A+. The CompTIA suggested progression is A+ then Network+, then Security+ so you get your Sec+ and you're good to go!
I think it also really comes down to the role you're interested in, A+ is a very base level, broad scope of IT knowledge. I never took the A+ exam, but I did go through the course programs at an older job. It really is more focused on Helpdesk and Tech Support.

Nope, not at all. You have to have your webcam on the entire time and your computer is monitored by an exam proctor. You can’t even have anything on or around your desk! They are very strict about it when taking the exam from home. With good reason!

Hi Zak, am one of your followers, am doing my master degree on cs and my graduation project this semester is in cybersecurity... I don't have that much experience on the field. Do you think I can find a job ? or I need to start working on a certificates after graduating?
Well it sounds to me like you're perfectly prepped to find some awesome opportunities after graduation! Developers are highly sought after for cybersecurity and many people think development is one of the most important skills in order to succeed. It makes sense right? If you know how software and apps are built, it makes it that much easier to reverse engineer them and find their weaknesses.
As far as certifications, you could definitely pursue some base level certs like the Security+ or if you're more interested in Pentesting, the eLearnSecurity eJPT. Look into the Try Hack Me and Hack the Box platforms as well for getting some hands-on learning.
With a Master's in CS and a final project focused on cybersecurity, I definitely think you'll be able to find something after graduation.

@@ZakJaeb I have passed the Network+, Security+, and Cloud+ since last Aug. 29th and earned those certifications and 2 professional certifications from Comptia. I do have over 30 years experience in IT though. I just never tried to get certified before. I am waiting for the result from the CYSA+ beta exam I took in November. That would net me another professional certification, as well. I am now studying for the Linux+, CCNA, and AWS Certified practitioner certifications. I use my many years of experience combined with brute force studying methods to pass.

You can get an entry level cybersecurity job. Once you start getting experience, you can then start apply for higher level jobs. If you have a security clearance or can find a employer willing to sponsor you for one, then you’ll be much more marketable at that point.

@@1dgrandson When you say those two certifications, what other certification from Comptia are you referring to? The Security+ is a Comptia cert.
There are definitely jobs out there that will accept certifications. However, I would highly recommend trying to take on some personal projects that you can show as portfolio pieces as well. Especially if you don't have any prior experience at all.
Most likely you'll be starting out in a more generalized IT Support/Administrator role where you'll get an opportunity to work on cybersecurity related projects. This can help you decide which avenue you want to focus on. Everybody in the US Armed Forces that has an IT specialty takes a 5 day course and test out on SATURDAY!
This is how I did for Network+ and Security+ back to back. So in the same month in 2 working weeks I came out with 2 certifications. As much as I will like to think I am a genius, I am not.
They key... MOTIVATION and DISCIPLINE!
If I tell you, you cant do your job without this piece of paper and you will be doing some low skilled work, you will rise to the occasion.
CASP for officers is another one week course, the same with Ethical Hacker.
ONE MONTH? That is a waste of a lifetime!!!

this person aint lying, i went in army for simliar job in IT, i was 25U (Signal Support System Specialist), i was jack of all trades in IT but master of none. The course you go through is seriously really accelerated and super fast, i know for a fact i barely made it through SEC+ because that shit was super DENSE with acronyms. You really gotta take your time and learn at your own pace and style. For most people i know they learn through video PLUS a book to go over a chapter you are most confused about, it seriously helps!

I would advice people to get their computer science degree , if you trying to become a developer or working in cyber security. If course, jobs will hire if you have the experience or certification. However, bachelor degree will definitely separate from those who have certification. My two cent. Coming from a software developer point of view.
