Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with such generosity. I just wish I had accepted an apprenticeship in the late 60's but my parents forbade me. At 63, I am trying to catch up on years of omission!. Probably too late, but being able to watch you create such masterpieces not only gives me joy, but rekindles my desire to create and make up for lost painting time. I wish you and your wife every blessing.
Art has away of healing broken hearts, when life is filled with things that are hard and difficult, art pulls you away from all that, and with each stroke of the brush it brings you closer to happiness and healing.
Thank you so much for this series! Things are quite bleak at the moment, but being stuck at home, I've had a chance to explore new hobbies and learn new things so I am very grateful for these excellent videos :)
Thanks so much for coming in to our channel and hopefully learning more about Art and the amazing Artists across the globe. If you get the time share our channel with your friends. We upload a new video every week. Thanks again, Graeme
Another great show by Graeme Stevenson interviewing the great talent of artist Barry McCann. Okay, granted, I am two years behind here but I just recently discovered Graeme Stevenson's show interviewing artists. I was thrilled to learn that Barry was painting with acrylics and in a hot climate like Australia! I have learned so much just by watching Barry McCann move his paint brush around the canvas especially how he gave light strokes in order to create movement. I have just recently taken up painting. I have done two paintings in acrylics and I am seriously considering taking up watercolours because of the difficulty and tediousness I encountered with acrylics in blending because the paints dry so fast, and the problems I have in trying to get rid of hard edges and that cut-out, stuck on appearance. I enjoyed watching Barry McCann and his skillful way in how he mastered painting with the known challenges of acrylics. I wish I could do that. :) Acrylics is usually associated with pop-art etc. and what made me like so much about Barry McCann's style was that he was using acrylics in a more classical way of painting so that if you walked into the room your first impression would be they were oil paintings. His paintings are wonderful. I thought his painting of that guy with black top, blue jeans lying stretched out on the floor across his partner's knee, also in blue jeans, was truly magnificent and natural looking! I enjoyed this interview immensely.
Why don't you try oil paint? It is easier than acrylics in that it doesn't dry quickly, you can manipulate it more, easily wipe it off or scrape it back using a palette knife if you make a mistake and build up semi-opaque layers as some colours are transparent, unlike acrylic. This artist makes acrylics look easy but so find painting with them frustrating. I cannot see the point in copying a photograph. As a beginner, it makes more sense to copy a painting by an old master to learn the re unique of painting. You need to learn to draw before you can paint, which takes a lot of practice and. Learn about colour mixing. I suggest you join a class. There are also great video tutorials free on UA-cam. I recommend those by my tutor, Alex Tsavaras 'Simplified Painting': he's a great teacher.
You shall receive a blessing for providing the world with these excellent videos. Ya'll need to work on that driving on the wrong side of the road though.
Just watched this wonderful video and "met" Graeme and Barry for the first time. Thank you both so much for bringing your talent and passion to all of us out here. Now I'm running for my brushes :)
absolutely brilliant art works; personally I love the way Barry created the image of his friend in sort of that one brush stroke (diagonal) and still looks realistic.
Kevin Flores Hi , yes he is amazing. We will have many more great Artists over time, so I hope you enjoy them all, dont forget to tell other folks about us. This only helps us to keep all of this going for everyone out there, hope all is well, Graeme
Absolutely Fabulous! Thank you Graeme for bringing such beauty and introduce us to Australia through its artists. And Mr. Barry - unbelievable! A fan of both from India.
Incredible work, looks like a printed photo, as title says Master, he is legend, what a lovely strokes!!! Would love to see more of his video. Thanks for sharing his work :)
Graeme, another excellent video! Barry really shows his expert painting skills with his enthusiasm and love of what he does. Thank you for this wonderful video!
Wow!!! Amazing awesome talent. You are blessed! happy watching you how your magic fingers move magic. Thanks forf sharing your talent.Master Barry McCann.

i see a few comments saying that its not art to paint directly from a photograph...but (correct me if im wrong) I understand that HE took the photograph himself. Which means he used his artistic eye to capture the photo which he then used as a reference to paint. The subject matters are the same in both the photograph and the painting but he used his skills and knowledge of composition and values to capture the subject in two different art forms. and he did it really beautifully. So im not sure where the critique is coming from. If he was painting a model (which if you watch the video he clearly does in other paintings), would you say he was just copying from real life? Im just confused on the critique about copying from a photograph.
@@ColourinyourlifeAu I find that individuals that aren't artists themselves are overly critical of artist's work. I see it a lot with abstract work. The very same people that would say that Barry is "copying from a photograph" would say that abstract art isn't real art. If they see Barry as just a copier and abstract art as not art then I wonder what these types of people actually see as art and what their idea of a "real artist" is. Thanks for the reply!
I find a good response to people saying using reference photos is "not real art" is to ask them if they would expect a construction worker to build a house without a blueprint; or as for using tools, if they would expect the same worker to build without a hammer, or a level! It can be done, but generally not well.
this is dumb. I thought your tag was meant to be ironic!! A good figurative artist can take photos and use them to make an artistic statement. A bad artist takes a photo and copies it slavishly. We have the second type here. An accomplished copyist. You see a lot of celebs doing 'abstract art' that is just a jumble of clashing colours and usually some kind of 'face' at the centre. These guys can neither draw nor understand basic colour theory. Look at Picasso, Sutherland or Miro. Abstract artists with actual art skills.
Jade Ratliff To use your analogy, a blueprint is like a compositional sketch, any competent artist will do this. Copying a photo bypasses basic creative choices such as value patterns or colour composition. Your final art can only be judged by how exactly you copied your photo reference.
Fabulous art. I would be delighted to even reach the sketch phase, the only aspect I am anywhere near is the removal of the masking tape. Wonderful episode.

Hi Graeme! Love your show! Can I request that you make an episode about geometry and composition? I've been reading about the golden ratio, the Fibonacci numbers, The sinister & the baroque diagonal, golden triangles and the gestalt principle but one 3 minute explanation by Barry McCann gave me much more practical information I can actually use when I'm thinking about my composition! (The bit where he talks about the 'armature of a rectangle' and 'painter's secret geometry' if I heard correctly)
+dina kalo Hi Dina, I will write a blog for you guys on our face book page, so you can get a better idea of how all of this works, dont have much time these days to do another show on me , we are just to busy travelling the globe now, hope all is well, Graeme
