The bit where he was moving shrouded by the jacket/blanket was a Joseph Beuys reference to the performance piece "I like america and america likes me". He tweeted out a Beuys book and an image of the work several years ago. Probably the most direct confirmation that performance art is the intended lens. Salute.
Wow. Incredible video. I’m literally lost for words. I love how you dissect and analyse these things. I’d also add on that the Performance Art was spread across more than just the 2 minutes in question. The 24 hour livestream as he crafted the album before the performance. The lifting into the sky. The “performing” during the performance. This was a 10/10 video for sure.
I am so happy people saw the Donda stream as performance art. Kanye being a black man and being labeled as a "rapper" always leads to this negative connotation which makes people degrade Kanye as a true artist. People don't want to admit that he is in fact a creative genius and its so crazy to me because Kanye actually went to art school, hes literally mentioned Marina Abramovic in interviews. He knows what he's doing and I think his intention was indeed to show us a performance. I truly can't wait to see the new generation of contemporary art textbooks show Kanye in them and give him the proper respect he deserves. You brought up amazing points in this video especially how if this was done by a white man people wouldn't hesitate to call it performance art. Thank you so much for making this video. (P.S During the Donda performance Kanye had a large black jacket over his head walking in a circle, I saw someone compare it to Joseph Beuys "I Like America and America Likes Me". I wanted to know what you think about this)
People always make comments about his bipolar disorder and just brush him off as “crazy” because of the way he speaks so passionately, but he doesn’t get credit for the level of sophistication in his work. People know they are intrigued by him but won’t admit it
I don't imagine you were implying this, but we can often forget that rappers (and pop stars, and rock stars, and even vapid 'celebrities') can also be sometimes great artists. There aren't a lot of rappers I would say transcend, but there are a few. Some rappers stay as 'just a rapper', but within that is a collection of great art.
I would love to see an hour long video on the psyche/Art of Kanye West. It’s so interesting me that Kanye encourages free thought and encourages people to think. I would love a breakdown from you. Great video btw
This interpretation of Kanye is very similar to mine and what I’ve been telling friends and family for years. The difference is I don’t have .01% of the eduction you have in arts and about .01% of the capability to articulate the many layers and levels of Kanye as well as you do. So, thanks ;)
Every Discord server I was on, that wasn't even music-focused, had a large crowd in the voice chat with someone re-streaming the Apple Music stream. Kanye's impact as an overall artist transcends any 1 art form.
The masks are a reference to Martin Margiela's 1989 spring show. Kanye is very open about Margiela being a huge influence on him and his work. In the fashion world of the late 80's, having famous model's appear in your runway would make or break the show, Margiela covered the model's faces using black masks. Kanye also works with Deema Gvasalia, a designer from Maison Margiela who designed the Donda merch and the 2nd Donda show, as well as helped Kanye making season 1.
Kanye doesn’t like being labeled or put into any boxes. He is always evolving and challenging whatever he can. “As soon as they like you, make them unlike you”

I'm glad you watched it. The listening parties are part of the Kanye album experience as an artist and what he did last night was a major highlight of his career that might be more essential than an album because it displayed so much about him as an all-around artist. Skye I like your review very much. Kanye, like many great artists have experienced an epiphany. He is creating for the audience the closest thing that one can make encompassing all of the senses to have a GOD LIKE CONNECTION and make the object (person) being observed and viewer one. Your take on performance art is very clear.
Great video and analysis of the intersection of so called low art / high art, or commercial art and fine art. Also the mixing of art genres and formal training in a field and not as well as crossing between various genres. When my wife and I were in London, and went to the British Museum, one of the most interesting exhibits, were collections of various things by people who were not experts in the fields of objects collected. It made me think of the benefits of delving into something with fresh eyes. This is an important and very interesting subject in the arts today.Thanks.
Absolutely loved this video. Great insight. Thank you for this. The Donda donda donda piece also represents heartbeats. Each "donda" said was a heartbeat.
God I found this channel yesterday and i'm loving the refreshingly intelligent, mature and cultured point of view. The Jay Electronica review was on point too.
I hope you saw the stream before the actual event that was the best thing I've ever watched and im not nearly as prepared as you but all the messages, beauty and all the things I witnessed through that stream were amazing. at a point two women were wearing red dresses with silver armor boots and stared at the camera while Kanye recorded music in front of them, at a pion Kanye went to sleep with his face mask on in front of the camera for 5 hours, then a black man dressed in black standed next to a beautiful model in a black dress with silver boots and both stared at the camera for probably 30 mins people were coming in then going out. Don C was there Kanyes chef and Steven Smith a legendary sneaker designer were there just siting with Nico ballestros bu and demna balenciagas and vetements
This video is just amazing, i can picture this guy and Kanye having conversations that would last for hours and hours, he talks almost identically as Kanye. This man knows what he's talking about. Awesome video!!
Kanye absolutely HAS said he’s a performance artist. In his 2014 Breakfast Club interview, when asked why he didn’t replace himself with celebrity impressionist Jay Pharaoh for the Bound2 video, he says “this is performance art, I’m like Marina Abramovic”
I couldn't get the video to work during the listening party. I was only seeing out of context clips and when "Donda" being repeated, I was extremely confused as to what was going. This helped give more context
everything he has ever done is performance art and whether he intends it or not, he realizes this. he knows that no matter what he does/does not plan to do or say it will be talked about. to me it seems like a giant reflection of his relatability and general celebrity culture.
I always have to remind myself from time and time again that along from being different artistry wise from everyone else, he also had such a different upbringing as far as the black experience from any other artist. Around the time he was starting in the music scene, the big players were still black artists who’s reality were the street life, and their music reflected the street life. NWA, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Notorious BIG, 50 Cent, just to name a few. But Kanye was different in the sense that he grew up pretty middle class. He had a great sense for style and polo shirts, both his parents were very highly educated. So I agree with Skye’s point in that he pretty much has the upbringing and resume of a highly successful white person. And that is exactly where the racism starts. But even moreso, he is a futurist. Just as all this racism in America continues to go on, Kanye was talking about all of this back in 2013 with Yeezus, because he is ALWAYS at least a decade ahead of everyone.
that ain't too genius, thou bruh that sounds like smth a child would come up with actually, one could argue everything Kanye does could be looked at this way which is - still - actually, almost obviously - I think - a gr8 thing "my childish creativity fighting for custody" u kno', right?)
Lest we forget that Ye was on track to go to go to Art School. He is most definitely the most successful performance Artist of all time. Great review 💫
Damn, never thought about the performance like this . Great insights and great articulation. someone should show this to Kanye I think he would greatly appreciate that people have more to say than just “this is dope” or “this is wack” Also this gives me a whole new perspective on what I’d like to do with the art I’m creating in my life, going forward. So thank you ☺️
I don’t think he’s going to release digital albums anymore. From now on, his music will only be heard via periodic live-streamed performances. Catch the stream, or you’ll never get the chance to hear new music from him.
As kanye as that would be to do, spotify staff has already confirmed that the album will drop. Plus people in kanye's camp are saying today's the day it'll drop on streaming. Edit: this shit aint dropping today💀
This would be AMAZING! As a one time only listening experience. I applauded ! BUT on the flip side.. extremely sad because I do want to consume it in traditional form like his past bodies of work.
I love your enthousiasm about the art and your passion to meticulously explain the details to others! Subbed immediately. I enjoyed the livestream a lot yesterday and I picked up on some points but watching this made me realize better why it affected me so strongly because it was such a powerful performance art. I've followed a few courses at my uni on art history and western art even though I'm an economics major, but I still always felt like I don't know where to really start my journey to understand art and artists better. I've watched many people on this website but it is this video which showed me exactly what I want to aim for. Thanks for referring to those two books as a starting point, I'm definitely going to buy them asap. Do you have any other suggestions which would help me better understand/interpret existent art and also on the creation of new art? Thanks!
I think this could also be seen as what happens to a concept for an art piece the longer you work on it. "Donda" is repeated so many times that, at least to me and my experience, her name lost meaning and just became sounds and a rhythm. And artistic idea that you eventually become numb to the more you expose yourself to it.
I agree with you 100% that’s why when I found out you can order the red jacket from the first listening party he did from yeezy gap I did the only catch is that it doesn’t ship until February 2022 and I understand as far away but I already see this jacket selling for $800 so I’m going to hold onto it like a famous painting and allow to accumulate value but I actually like the jacket too so for me I believe that’s a win-win and that would not be possible if he was an performance artist
ok so im a huge Ye fan and i been listening to him since the beginning and as a black person he has inspired me to be an artist. i first heard thru the wire in 2005 at 11 and been following every kanye move since. DONDA SORROUND is an audio system that he designed in tandem with DONDA VISION where it was a seven screen experience. he has his name on the patent or it is owned by the DONDA creative group. i also think that the "donda interlude" serves a secondary purpose because he has named so many important things after his mother, what came to me immediately was that he is also thinking about the consequences of success. I also think that with the creative direction was important to note that Demna was working with him and he has worked with kanye before and they share a similar creative palette of fashion silhouettes, religious iconography, uniforms and massive, almost dystopian oppressive spectacle
Coming back here after the Donda 2 show. It was everything the first show one, but better. I think Ye had a better idea of what he wanted to express this time around.
Im not surprised by the performance, since 2010-ish we have seen Kanye do a lot of impressive artistic performances. However I'm still puzzled by the following question: was it planned to do a first listening party and then do this crazy run for the second one? Or did he just sort of improvise it in the weeks after the first one? It matters to me because if its improvised Im not really looking at connecting the dots between the events, but if it was planned Im reaaally interested in what he has been doing all these weeks and what the point of the first listening party was. He played music tha wasnt finished, walked around the stadium during soccer games, seemed to miss release dates etc. And to me the story doesn't feel finished. Im getting a bit of a Yeezus tour- type of Dantes Inferno, where the ascending at the end of the second act (/second listening party) is just a step up for a third event, where everything comes together. Maybe the album is finished all along and we are just being played with, maybe we witness his entire process live and semi improvised, maybe there will never be an album. Who knows? Whatever it is, I'm totally there for it
i think he said a few years ago (i cant find the link sorry ) that him and kim were performance artists. He also tweeted about Andy Kaufman and Joseph Beuys a few times.
Bingo! Who else can so casually, and effectively transform the whole concept of "concert" itself? And make bloody live performance art! the new concert. #Genius # God #Brethren
was literally telling my girl this about the livestream before the show that it was performance art but bc ye is a rapper people wouldn’t recognize it as such unfortunately rap fans are so two dimensional but there’s a lot more to the art form and ye has always been in the forefront of letting that be known! Nice video, thank you !
What do you think of the theory he's performing Dantes Divine Comedy? The first show was representing hell, the second was purgatory with his ascension to heaven in the end. Now with the rumors of a possible stadium change, I'm thinking: maybe he's going to LA where his mother died, to give us the third show in heaven.
I just posted the same thing and then I saw your comment! Interesting to see other people thought of this as well. It really connects to the Yeezus tour narrative and it would fit in the biblical narrative as well. I also noticed the changing colour tones: during the first performance he was all red in a white surrounding (devilish/not sane, in a sane environment), the second one he is obviously in some hellish/purgatory place (red lights, dark), surrounded by faceless demons. Only at the end he ascends to the light. He also seems to have no real posessions anymore except for himself, his music (the sheets with rhymes/notes?) and his faith in god. Lonely in his prison cell..
@@pjetrs Yes, exactly! And I'm sure the changing colours have to mean something as Kanye is in general very thoughtful of the colour palette he uses for his projects.

Skye I like your review very much. Kanye, like many great artists have experienced an epiphany. He is creating for the audience the closest thing that one can make encompassing all of the senses to have a GOD LIKE CONNECTION and make the object (person) being observed and viewer one. Your take on performance art is very clear.
in 2016 In an interview with the breakfastclub, Kanye referred to him self as a performance artist, in the likes of Marina Abramovic.
Why couldn’t my college professor be this cool lol damn bro
Great review!
Much love from Gothenburg Sweden
Great lecture, professor. I agree with you. People need to give Kanye the credit he deserves.
God I found this channel yesterday and i'm loving the refreshingly intelligent, mature and cultured point of view. The Jay Electronica review was on point too.
6:32 was great
I hope you saw the stream before the actual event that was the best thing I've ever watched and im not nearly as prepared as you but all the messages, beauty and all the things I witnessed through that stream were amazing. at a point two women were wearing red dresses with silver armor boots and stared at the camera while Kanye recorded music in front of them, at a pion Kanye went to sleep with his face mask on in front of the camera for 5 hours, then a black man dressed in black standed next to a beautiful model in a black dress with silver boots and both stared at the camera for probably 30 mins people were coming in then going out. Don C was there Kanyes chef and Steven Smith a legendary sneaker designer were there just siting with Nico ballestros bu and demna balenciagas and vetements
I cackled at Weston Kelly. So good. Subbed.
This video is just amazing, i can picture this guy and Kanye having conversations that would last for hours and hours, he talks almost identically as Kanye. This man knows what he's talking about. Awesome video!!
The famous music video… that that performance art asf yalllll 😭🙌🏽
Amazing!!! Thank you! :)
This is some really great stuff. I appreciate you making this video
Another genius aspect of the performance was that Donda was repeated exactly 58 times.
Which represents the total number of years she lived.
that ain't too genius, thou bruh
that sounds like smth a child would come up with
actually, one could argue
everything Kanye does could be looked at this way
which is - still -
actually, almost obviously - I think - a gr8 thing
"my childish creativity
fighting for custody"
u kno', right?)
@@yehor_ivanov I mean he did say in an interview he creates as if he was 4
@@yehor_ivanov I mean one could argue that his ability to still create like a child over 30 years after being one is genius.
🤯
@@yehor_ivanov walt disney, Michael jackson all created through the lense of children. Thats what made them so legendary
The biggest Ye fan is here to review a performance for the actual performance and not the music. Respect.
I posted the behind the scenes of that listening party on my channel, Kanye is the most creative/influential artist of this generation
Wonderfully articulated
man you’re such a cool guy. great video 🔥🔥
as a italian art student I agree on this, fuck academic, kanye have value and is a fine artist
Lest we forget that Ye was on track to go to go to Art School. He is most definitely the most successful performance Artist of all time. Great review 💫
Incredible video, I'll be sharing it with my friends ♥️
I think that his vision is so strong he can create and keep creating and since it is all based off of one idea it all ties together
Damn, never thought about the performance like this . Great insights and great articulation. someone should show this to Kanye I think he would greatly appreciate that people have more to say than just “this is dope” or “this is wack”
Also this gives me a whole new perspective on what I’d like to do with the art I’m creating in my life, going forward. So thank you ☺️
Look up the story behind NO LOVE DEEP WEB by Death Grips. Great example of modern performance art
The biggest moment in Art, Fashion and music was a Listening Party. 🔥🔥🔥
Not sure if that's true but its an interesting idea. It's crossed my mind too.
He better, I paid for a copy of the digital upon release
@@brawler5785 I recall him once saying “F*ck you and your corporation, you people can’t control me!”
This would be AMAZING! As a one time only listening experience. I applauded ! BUT on the flip side.. extremely sad because I do want to consume it in traditional form like his past bodies of work.
Wow. Thank you.
You're channel is an absolute gem and i really enjoy your fresh takes on artists and music :)
Excellent point. He could very well name it Kimberly at this point.
This is a great video! You had me at Warhol!
excellent. just.. excellent.
Great work man
I agree with you 100% that’s why when I found out you can order the red jacket from the first listening party he did from yeezy gap I did the only catch is that it doesn’t ship until February 2022 and I understand as far away but I already see this jacket selling for $800 so I’m going to hold onto it like a famous painting and allow to accumulate value but I actually like the jacket too so for me I believe that’s a win-win and that would not be possible if he was an performance artist
He is the modern performance artist of the time.
Donda
ok so im a huge Ye fan and i been listening to him since the beginning and as a black person he has inspired me to be an artist. i first heard thru the wire in 2005 at 11 and been following every kanye move since.
Kanye Got everybody asking the same question h’es been asking himself since years
*Where is Donda??
Holy shit that’s deep.
true
Brilliant video essay!
What an incredible analysis!
Kanye has done this before like with yeezy season 3 that was the life of Pablos listening party as well that was amazing too
Learning a lot from you.
Bingo! Who else can so casually, and effectively transform the whole concept of "concert" itself? And make bloody live performance art! the new concert. #Genius # God #Brethren
i think demna gvasalia contributed a large part of the performance since he directed it
LOVE THIS CONTENT
wonderful video!
was literally telling my girl this about the livestream before the show that it was performance art but bc ye is a rapper people wouldn’t recognize it as such unfortunately rap fans are so two dimensional but there’s a lot more to the art form and ye has always been in the forefront of letting that be known! Nice video, thank you !
You need to put your Patron into the video descriptions! Can’t find the link to support you
thank you
What do you think of the theory he's performing Dantes Divine Comedy? The first show was representing hell, the second was purgatory with his ascension to heaven in the end. Now with the rumors of a possible stadium change, I'm thinking: maybe he's going to LA where his mother died, to give us the third show in heaven.
would be a sick concept, however, apparently, it was cap that they were moving stadiums.
Excellent review, man. Is there any way I can get in touch with you? This video has inspired me, and I'd love to be able to open a dialogue with you regarding kanye the Artist. I feel a connection with you as a fellow "academic" interested in popular culture haha
VERY IMPORTANT TO POINT OUT AND UNDERSTAND IT'S PURPOSE. *****Did U know the sound of ... "Donda...Donda... Donda" was the last sounds of his Mothers HeartBeat Rhythm before she Passed*****
the same way you described A white kanye, i think a white the weeknd would 100% be considered a Pop Artist, never an RnB artist
