The 2024 Kia Sportage Hybrid arrives with an eye-catching exterior design, but its hybrid powertrains fail to deliver stellar fuel economy numbers. While the bold styling and practical interior are commendable, the disappointing fuel efficiency leaves us wanting more from this compact crossover.
Futuristic Flair With Ordinary Performance
At first glance, the Sportage Hybrid's origami-inspired bodywork and aggressive front fascia suggest an electrified crossover that's ahead of the curve. However, get behind the wheel and the Sportage reveals itself as a fairly ordinary compact utility vehicle - just one with an unconventional outfit.
The hybrid powertrain options include a 226-horsepower turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid or a 261-hp plug-in hybrid variant using the same gasoline engine. Both outmuscle the non-hybrid Sportage, with the plug-in model hustling to 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds in our testing. Straight-line performance is satisfactory, but the Sportage Hybrid's on-road demeanor is forgettable with numb steering and unremarkable handling.
Practical But Thirsty
Where the Sportage shines is its spacious, well-packaged interior. The longer wheelbase affords generous rear legroom, and there's a useful 40 cubic feet of cargo space behind the raised second row. The dual-level cargo floor maximizes versatility. While the design is attractive, the sea of hard plastic trim feels low-budget in this price range.
Unfortunately, the Sportage Hybrid's EPA fuel economy numbers are disappointing for an electrified crossover. The plug-in hybrid is rated at just 36 mpg combined after depleting its 34-mile electric range. In our real-world 75-mph highway test, the non-plug-in hybrid model returned only 31 mpg - 7 mpg short of its EPA highway rating.
Hit Or Miss?
Offered in a wide range of trim levels from LX to SX Prestige, pricing for the 2024 Kia Sportage Hybrid starts at $29,965. Stepping up to the more versatile plug-in hybrid commands a significant premium, with the X-Line Prestige PHEV topping out near $46,000. For that money, the Honda CR-V Hybrid and Hyundai Tucson PHEV seem like stronger bets for efficiency-minded buyers.
The new Sportage makes a bold visual statement and delivers a roomy, functional interior. However, its underwhelming hybrid fuel economy robs it of the maximum efficiency credentials you'd expect from Kia's latest electrified crossover. If you can look past its thirsty drinking habits, the Sportage Hybrid remains a compelling, well-equipped compact utility with loads of style.
