  • Preparing Your Watercolour Paints With The Right Amount Of Water | Watercolour Quick Fix Clinic
Thank you for all your responses to my Quick Fix Clinic call-out last year. We will be answering your questions every week.
This was another popular question, how do you get started with waking up the paints in your palette, and how much water is the right amount?

I often trim my paintings to make into cards and I then use these small offcuts to test the paint, it saves having to ‘waste’ a full sheet of good paper.

I use honey based watercolors, M Graham, Sennelier, and Mijello in my everyday palette. I never need to pre-wet my paints. As a matter of fact if I did pre-wet or spray my paints I would pick up waaaaaaay too much on my brush. However, my D.S., QOR, and Turner paints usually need to be wetted prior to using them.

Useful comment. We all have to approach it slightly differently depending on our set up

Thanks for your sharing, videos like this are very helpful for newbies like me. I'm having a hard time mastering watercolors, and I'm not well prepared. So your video is the best way for me to learn and prepare my own brushes and suitable watercolors.

Thanks. Somehow I never thought to test the strength of my colours on a piece of scrap paper first!

I received a block of Bockingford (Not) for Christmas from my cousin who lives in England. I'm really struggling with it though. Any tips on how to get the best use from it? I'm use to cotton paper. What I like about the Bockingford is it's lovely texture.

Hi Christina, I'm afraid I dont regularly use Bockingford although it's very good quality. I think if you're struggling with it just do a series of really basic strokes with different amounts of water and different brushes just to test drive it!

With the tube paints, if you have colours you mix frequently (like the shadows mix)… can you mix the actual paints into a well straight out of the tube?

I prefer to have each colour separate in the well and then mix in the open areas

I would really like to see you painting from a half pans, I have recently bought some and they are TINY! I am struggling not to get on a mess and now tho k they are impossible unless using a tiny brush and can’t use a large brush to transfer the paint to a mixing well. Help please!
