  • I'm redesigning and rebuilding my DIY CNC router. The intent is to make it functionally simpler and easier to build. I'm starting with the carriage assembly. With this upgrade I'm replacing the current Z axis mechanism with a simpler solution. This is my first go at a how-to video and I'm no video guru so please be kind in the comment section! :-)

    Thanks for watching.

A nice upgrade to your original design. I like the adjustable cam idea.

There is a lot of very nice, clever ideas in your design. Thanks for sharing.

Great video, been waiting on this for sometime.
I cant remember exactly when I first seen your machine, but it was on instructables and I thought it was brilliant. Will be looking forward to the rest of the series.

Thanks. I'll try to knock the installments in a timely manner.

I have wondered about the pro's & con's of having the gantry rise and fall, rather than a moving "Z" axis plate. Would really appreciate your thoughts, since you are in the rare position of having tried both! :o)
    Thanks again for the videos.

If I had mechanically coupled the two z-axis motors in the first iteration, I'd still be using that today. That said, I'm getting much faster z-axis motion in the current iteration. The advantage to rising and falling gantry is that the mechanical complexity is spread out. It leaves you plenty of real estate on the router plate to do stuff since the z-axis components are moved out to the gantry plates. In the current iteration, most of the mechanical complexity is concentrated on the router plate. This more traditional setup makes for a simpler gantry end-plate design which I think the less mechanically inclined cnc builder will have an easier time wrapping their heads around. The router plate on the current design is now more complex having both the x and z axis functions but I tried to simplify down to the bare minimum components (while still maintaining the roller chain, v-bearings, and reduction drive aspects). Having tried both setups now, I am going to recommend the more traditional setup.

Great engineering on the cnc. Quick question on your cam v bearing mechanism? Do you have a way to hold the cam mechanism in place once the correct pressure is set on the guide rails. I see its eccentricly designed and you adjust with the wrench but didnt see a way to lock in adjustment. (Maybe friction fit is all that is needed). Again great design and use of common materials

Just realized its locked in place with the bolt going through the backside

@@travishandl880 That's correct. When setting, I snug the assembly just enough to keep it seated but still able to spin with a wrench. When the position is correct, tighten the back nut down.

Brilliant, don't be so hard on yourself for editing skills, your work is amazing and speaks for it self.
Would it be possible to buy parts from you, to build a copy of your machine. (Woodenparts)
Looking forward to the rest of the build.

That's my intent, to provide a wood parts kit for those that want it. I'm working on the X-axis drive currently. After that, I'll have to take a look at redoing the gantry support plates.
