Watch in HD! This past Friday, my father and I went out to the Barstow area to film some trains, with the ultimate goal of capturing BNSF's Boron Local in action entering and exiting the Rio Tinto (Ex US Borax) Borax mine in Boron, around 30 miles west of Barstow. I also had a heads up that a brand-new UP ES44AH was on the point of a westbound intermodal, and decided to head over to Daggett to get the westbound train. That turned into an hour-and-a-half of waiting, as the train was delayed by track work out at Manix, and didn't get to Yermo until 9:30. Before the westbound could leave, I had caught two trains on the BNSF Needles Subdivision, both with great consists, and another UP train on the Cima Subdivision, which raced one of the BNSF Westbounds through town on its way to West Colton. The new heavy finally arrived and looked great coming through the superelevated curve at the end of UP-owned track in Daggett. Deciding to chase the train, I went down to Hodge and got it again before heading up to Hinkley, where a southbound BNSF intermodal train blasted by through an incredible s-curve that I've never seen any shots at before. After barely catching another southbound at Jim Grey, I arrived in Boron and found the local running around its train with a solid set of DASH 8-40BW locomotives (The same engines I found on the Cadiz Turn back in August of last year), with RS3L-equipped 543 leading the set of old GE's. I eventually caught the train both entering and exiting the plant, filmed two BNSF Northbounds with great consists, and wrapped up an incredible day of railfanning attempting to chase down the southbound local, but was skunked due to heavy traffic on highway 58. Really awesome video! But was that a caboose on the in and out plant consist?!? (or maybe just camera angle)?

probably a riding platform, since the consist is so big the crew at the head end is not able to see the rear, so a crew probably is on the caboose platform radioing the the engineer speeds and distances to things

Paul Rude thanks - makes sense. I sure miss seeing cabooses though.
