Hans Joachim Marseille was doubtless an incredibly talented pilot. He was and is considered by many to be one of, if not the best pilot in the history of aviation. While in North Africa, Marseille unexpectedly dives into an attack against a squadron of enemy Hawker Hurricanes.His daredevil lone assault surprises his own team. Despite missing his first barrage of shots, he remains undeterred, drawing fire from three enemy planes. He masterfully dodges their attack, leaving them behind except for one persistent adversary. Locked in a high-speed dogfight, both pilots try to outmaneuver each other. A miscalculation exposes Marseille to the enemy's fire, causing severe damage to his plane. Although shocked to be alive, he's aware of his critical situation as his damaged plane loses power and the enemy pilot, James Denis, prepares for another attack. In a first-ever concession, Marseille flees, diving towards the safety of his airfield. Denis, rather than sealing the kill, opts to assist his embattled squadron, leaving a wounded Marseille to make a desperate escape. But this isn't the last time the pair meet. What would happen on the second engagement?

And unlike Marseille, Denis lived to the ripe old age of 97. Note, he was 35 when he fought these engagements - an old man by fighter pilot standards.
well blame the bf109 g2 trop that killed him and the commanders that forced him to pilot it.
@@hekmatyar4476 I doubt he would have survived the war without being removed from combat. He was very reckless as well as being burned out and disillusioned (or so the story goes).
Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young.
@@hekmatyar4476 THe fault isn't on the 109, it was on Marseille. He was far too reckless to live long against good pilots. Sure, he could catch enemies by surprise with how aggressively he flew, but that only gets you so far. And against equally skilled pilots like Denis, his tactics didn't work.

Maybe because dogfights are mainly about destroying a machine, not so much about killing the person inside it.
You wouldn’t see this nearly as much in infantry combat.

Especially when you consider the guy was volunteer to fight after his country got overrun. Him, the other Free French, the Czechoslovaks, Poles & co are authentic heroes in this war.

I think it has a lot to do with the relatively low kill tally the Allied aces had. Which was due to the fact good excellent pilots was sent back to go train new ones. Usually The German aces would stay on the front flying sorties running up their counts until they either lived through the war, were killed, or couldn't fly anymore. Thats why we don't see Allied aces with as many kills.

I would love it if Yarnhub did a video on the Monchy 9 of Newfoundland. 9 men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment positioned at Monchy-le-Preux during the Battle of Arras in 1917 hid behind shrubbery and defended the town from a German force anywhere from 200 - 300 men strong for 11 hours to prevent a German break through. I think it is a very cool and very underrated battle that sounds like the plot of a movie.
Newfoundland has such a rich history!

Fun fact: When Marseille died attempting to leave his stricken Bf-109 over Sidi Abd el-Rahman in 1942, Italian engineers took it upon themselves to build a pyramid where he fell. It was neglected and eroded by 1989, when Marseille's old JG 27 comrades petitioned the Egyptian government to restore it. They did, and the pyramid is still there at time of writing.
Crazy how men can almost kill each other but always respecting the fair enemies. Another great video from Yarnhub and I got to see it early! (Yes I'm still waiting for more ground vehicle videos, can't wait!)
I wonder if it comes from a need to fight without the want,, or the level of experience of those involved.... but both traits can be found in hunting, even when just for sport.

James Denis does not currently have a Wikipedia article under his name in English, but he has in French. I think we need to make an article about him. While he isn't as "successful" as Marseille, at least he gets to see the end of the war and live the rest of his life until his death in 2001

The Free French Forces have always been underappreciated so its fairly on brand that despite besting Marseilles twice, Denis story is relatively unknown.
As well as french regular army before the fall of France, there are a lot of amazing stories, like the battle of Pont St Louis, battle of Stonne, the Jules Vernes ...
Such a shame that the Richelieu and her service history has been forgotten along with the rest of the Free French.

Richelieu has almost zero service history and did nothing to really justify herself, that’s why.
A well-designed battleship, but like all her contemporaries, built a decade or two too late to live up to her specs.
For those who want to know more about James Denis and the Free French EFC-1, Denis and his squadron were the first free Frenchmen to fight within the RAF but with the designation Forces Françaises Libres (FFL), it was a specifically French unit commissioned in March 1941 and disbanded in September 1941, which fought in the Battle of Tobruk and the Battle of Crête among Squadrons 73 and 33 of the RAF. James Denis, licensed Air Force pilot since 1929 but dismissed for health reasons since 1936, was a radio instructor during the Battle of France and therefore did not fight. He escaped to England just before the Armistice and joined De Gaulle who formed the No. 1 French Fighter Escadrille in December 1940 with the support of Churchill. Denis was its sole commander and main ace with 6 victories (not 21) +4 probable, including the two dogfighters against Marseille) only during the battle of Tobruk, and several of its members also became aces ( Albert Littolf and Noel Castelain were among the first to join the Normandie-Niemen squadron in 1942 and died in action in Russia on July 16, 1943). At its dissolution in September 1941, the squadron had 165 war missions, 26 aerial combats, 17 victories for 2 pilots killed or missing out of the 11 pilots who composed it, the EFC-1 and 9 of its pilots became Companions of the Liberation, and all of them have lived incredible stories.
So was it only six during his time in the FFL and only became 21 later or is the 21 completely fictional?

Actually, if i recall correctly, when Marseille was new, he was notorious for losing aircraft. Eventually, under Eduard Neumann in the desert, be settled into the cockpit to become the Hans we all know:)

Marseille was actually infamous in the Luftwaffe for getting his aircraft badly shot up while scoring his kills (it’s ironic that he wasn’t killed by enemy action in the end but due to equipment failure).
Well, air combat during WW2 often wasn't about who was a better pilot. It was all about numbers and positioning.
You can be the best pilot in the business, but you have v. slim chances of winning a 1 v 2, and even winning 1 v 1 if you start lower and slower (due to previous combat f.e.) is extremely difficult. Basically you either played it super safe, or you were losing your aircraft and relying on luck to survive.
The animation is actually unbelievable now. Can't believe y'all started with 2D videos... Thank you Yarnhub for teaching us even more interesting stories about our favorite events in history!

James Denis was actually French and French pilots during the war were among the best, during the invasion of France the French Air Force shot down 2 German fighters for every one they lost. Respect from UK.
While Marseille not being directly French, was of obvious French descent. He was the descendant of huguenots.
That 2 for 1 claims ratio: was that based on French claims taken at face value or was it corroborated from German records? Most, if not all, fighter aircraft used by the French at that time would have been inferior to the Bf 109E.

@@ramonzzzz Honestly I can't remember the source too well, it was an academic article authored by a few officers from both the US and France and published in the early 2000s. I wrote a paper citing it a few years ago at university and just remember being shocked at the FAF performance. I just have that fact of a 2:1 ratio seared into my mind lmao. And yes you are correct, the Bf109E was 'superior' to all French fighters at this stage of the war. The French D.250 was on par but only produced in limited numbers. It came down to overall fighter numbers and tactics. The FAF picked their battles wisely.

The British and French lost 1020 machines.
If we write off some German planes by ground gun fire, (i would say 200 is not to high) - the losses in air combat "man to man" were about 1:1, including British planes.
Quick thing, rather minor, but since you're a historically driven channel, it's good to point out. The aircraft that Hans originally used was a 109 E series, which was the one that was used in the video. You can tell this by the "clipped" wingtips, the struts on the horizontal stabilizers, and the conical propeller mounting. With this model of 109, the cannons were mounted in the wings, not in the nose. It wasn't until the F and G series of 109 that the nose mounted cannons were used, and both could be identified by the more rounded wingtips, the dome shaped propeller mount, and since this was in the African theater, the air filter on the intake to prevent sand from entering the engine. Other than this, fantastic video.

That would be great: he tells the story of taking on a squadron of German bombers attacking Greece on Hitler's birthday and watching sailors from a blasted tanker being roasted alive in the water.

fun fact: after learning about the atrocities being conducted by the 3rd Reich, Hans Joachim Marseille would turn down the knights cross with oak leaf, swords and diamonds. He would still receive the award posthumously.

After throwing Atom bombs onto Japan, USVeterans also didnt throw away they Stars.. Pathos and a good Story is more important than reflect atrocities of own country, in particular the own side habe won AT the end.
@@michel8549Atom bombs were used on two militarized and industrialized cities that were legitimate targets. Though they were awful, it was a whole lot better than willingly killing several ethnic groups like what the Axis did.
Where did you read that he turned it down? He claimed 17 in a day on September 1 1942 and that’s is when it was awarded but September 30 he was dead. I have read every book on Marseille and it is nowhere mentioned he turned the knights cross with diamonds down.

The video reminded me of Paths of Hate, a very stylized video about a dogfight to the death between an early model Bf-109 and s Spitfire Mk I, especially when the two pilots did scissors trying to get the other in front of them. It's a good thing they didn't turn to demons at the end and didn't ram each other to conitnue the fighr with pistols and finally knives on the ground.

6 days ago u did an amazing job with the teenage sniper story but with this one........ brother i am speechless, the story is so amazing and the video, visuals and the music are so good that when the fight begin i was 100% immersed in the acction and on of the things i like about this story is that the hurricane pilot is called Dennis just like me so u can undestand that when i heared this my immersion doubled. (As every time a greate job yarnhub, with every story the video's become better and better, keep up the good job)
