Ha! I’m still home but my vessel is down at Port Etches as of Monday. There are five vessels of the same class with three of them being out of port at one time. Two in port on the buoys.
I loved this video! The last time I was Valdez was July of 1968 and it is so wonderful to see the old stomping grounds! My family lived in Kenai in those days. I ended up in England and am aging rapidly so I don't know if I will ever get back to Alaska so I am grateful for your postings! Much love and gratitude........

Many weeds are edible & medicinal. I stopped using compost because it attracted too many horrible house flies & mice, rabbits, racoons & squirrels therefore they ruined my garden.
Why do people come from other parts of Alaska to your area to go snowmobiling? I mean don't they have their own snow? Lol

Interesting you call Stoats Ermine when they're bedecked in their "summer apparel ". In winter, here in Albion, we'd call them Ermine when they're all white, in summer no. Once saw one having a scrap with a rabbit at least 6 times it's size. It did'nt go hungry that day/week ! Btw, is treated flypaper any good for the mozz ?
Hi Bob! I use the treated flypaper in the corners of my windows tucked behind the curtains, and yes, the mosquitoes become trapped just as easily as the flies do. Thanks for watching and for the question & comment. 🤗

I see the break up is upon you now,and sure, with it comes them skeeters 😢 they are a royal pain in the -bleep-, i know..they seem to love my blood too, have you considered building a few bat houses yet? It would make for some good content for a video and it'll help with the night time attacks from the buzzing felons 😅 also..dont forget that they come out in the day time as well, i know I've suggested it before, however i also know that they work.. "the Dragonflies" get yourself a few dozen pods and just chuck em' in the small ponds around your property and maybe 1 or 2 in a five gallon bucket of water outside of the cabin...from what i read , they tend to stay within 500 meters of their spawning location, thats a 1500 foot radius of protection, and they prey on every other flying insect from deer flies,mosquitoes, wasps and even termites while they are still winged,in most cases they'll find the larvae of the mosquitoes in standing waters when looking for a drink and they wipe that out too, before they can even get into the air...i think its worth a shot..just search Dragon fly pods, they'll ship em to ya, ya gotta get em in the water soon though...i see that Kenia is doing well too, playing in the mud isn't just for human boys i guess 😂 oh yeah before i forget, do you know that they make auger like bits that you can just stick into your cordless hand drill, and you can use it to aerate and rototill your garden , and at the same time de weed it...they aren't expensive either...welp, this is getting long, i hope all is well ,and i look forward to the next video as always, be well

Hi Mike! I think those are some great ideas! I have no idea where the bats hang out during the day here, but I do see them in the late-night hours here in the warmer months. Anything to reduce the population. I know you had mentioned the dragonfly pods last year. Definitely worth looking into. If only the ponds were just a wee bit closer to the cabin. This morning just before the sun came up over the mountains, Ben my six years old great pyrenees was digging out a wild rabbit, he got to the rabbit, but the rabbit was too fast. Lol you should have seen the look on his face.
This weekend I'm putting in new batteries in my battery back, as well as adding more solar panels.
I have bought things online, and when it got here I was totally disappointed...
I consider myself lucky, I heat with propane, I have a 500 gallon tank. It's last 7 months heating my camper.

I bet a woodworker could make good use of those tree parts. Ah, a new hobby for you wood turning. You will get the homestead in shape. Some very useful information for survival ideas for heat, great plans for updating the electric. Nature critters can be a challenge at times. Great idea for the bug coils. Hobby Gardner's are some of the resources for beginners. I am a Hobbiest woodworker. Ratts, darn rian. Love the out takes. Growing puppy is a hard job.

Where is that fenced-in area you had? And it seems like the outhouse is far out from the house? If you are like me, at age 66, I would have to visit the outhouse a couple of times a night. How does that even work? A bucket or what. I would have more fenced-in, bear-resistant areas.
Hi! The fenced in area is in one of the front corners of the cabin. I built it last summer out of dog run panels picked up at a big box hardware store. It was meant to be a dog run for Kenai. I do have plans to fence in the back of the property so that Kenai can have a proper yard to explore.
The current outhouse is not that far, but yes, the new one will be further as there will be an outdoor kitchen built eventually and I did not want to chance any drainage running towards the kitchen so it will be placed the appropriate distance from the future outdoor kitchen. I don't use the outhouse most of the year. On occasion, but I do have an indoor composting toilet that I empty into the outhouse.

Wouldn't sand & sandbags help the flooding situation? The TV News always shows people using sand & sandbags when hurricanes hit & massive flooding & they try to stop the water from getting into their homes.

Enjoyed seeing Valdez again. Hate to admit it, but its probably been 15 years or more since I have went that way. We took the Ferry from Whittier to Valdez, and camped our way back to the big town. Plenty of "meals on wheels" back then. :-)

Skeeters hate marigolds😊 aphids hate garlic and I grow both in abundance because I dont like skeeters or aphids easy fix for those and for flies hang a bag at the top of the door with copper pennies and a little bit of water no more flies😁hornets those are meat eaters so I make peace with them and place a ball of raw burger about 150 to 200 ft away from where I am.

Mice do not hibernate. In fact, in our area, the mice are worse than ever in the winter as they try to get into the house and stay warm.
Hi Joe! You are correct when talking about a house mouse. However, house mice are not common where I live. The field and deer mice do go into a state of torpor, while the meadow jumping mice that we have in this area do hibernate for about 9 months of the year. For me I don't see mice at all in the winter. I do see voles in the winter months, but once spring and fall roll around the mice are active. Thank goodness for that ermine. I carry a Thermacell Portable Mosquito & Multi-Insect Repeller. I even one to my dog’s harness or close to where my pup is. Works wonders. Keeps them off of you for sure. Take care. Hi Monica! Yes, the thermocells. I couldn't remember what they were called when I filmed, but I do have a couple of the clip-on type. I put them on my chair when sitting by the campfire. Thanks for the reminder as I need to pick up some refill strips. 🤗

Hi Debbie! Hope you’re doing well and enjoying the spring weather. As for the mosquitoes, normally I use a DIY repellent that I shared in a mosquito video last year. It is made with essential oils and witch hazel. As for Kenai he does get a small amount of this on his snout and head but for the most part when they start attacking him, he goes inside. The reason you didn’t see them in this video was that there was just enough of a breeze to keep the mosquitos at bay. So far this season they haven’t been that bad. Hopefully it won’t be as severe as last year! 🤞🤗🐾❤️
@@AloneinRemoteAlaska Yes I remember the mosquito repellant video👍 I took That advise and I will be making that recipe this summer. Breeze does help to keep them off of you while you work. I sometimes put a fan on and face it toward the garden while I’m working to keep them blowing in the wind away from me lol. I’m excited cause I was able to start my garden 😍 I’m planting green beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, dill, chives, pineapple mint and cucumbers for pickling. I’m not putting them in the ground this year. I can no longer deal with the weeds. The bending and pulling the weeds is not happening any longer lol. Therefore I am doing container gardening on garden tables this year. And I’m utilizing crates and 5 gallon buckets as well. I’m thinking of doing a video on it. Awesome productivity. Looks like new sound and video, very clear. Meh, I say leave the wood pile there for now, it's in the SUN. I think I told you I endured 3 months of mouse torture last summer. It happened all over town . Divorce rates soared. But I finally won! Yes, those dorky mosquito coils do acutally work. I recently read that burnt coffee grounds do as well. My town in CT was known as The Great Swamp Society in the 1750's. So, yeah, we still get those too. I just sent out three Clyde's Garden Planners to a couple buds , only 3 bucks and it's ingenious. Covers companion planting also, something I need to memorize, And it's a slide rule device , no computer needed. Just brilliant. Find this guy on You Tube . Or maybe I can con him into sending you one to review. Hmm. Very nice looking cabin , lots of space . Yes, don't plant any chinese or Russian invasives and keep your powder dry.
That breaker box reminds me of the one that used to be in my grandparents old house before they move. It was always something that a screen. Kid's head to watch out for otherwise, we'd smack our heads and do it cause it was just dangling right there like yours.😊

A rake might be really useful
The best mousetrap I've ever used consists of a 5 gallon pickle bucket, a dowel rod, a mostly empty jar of peanut butter and a 4 foot long 2x4. Drill two holes the same size as dowel rod through both sides of the bucket near the top, about 1 1/2 to 2 inches down. Drill a hole through the center of the peanut butter jar down through the center of bottom of the jar. Tread the dowel rod through the bucket then through the jar and out the other side of the bucket so the jar is suspended over the center of the bucket and spins freely. Drill some small holes in the jar and smear peanut butter on the outside of it. Fill the bucket with about 8 inches of water. Smear the 2x4 with peanut butter and prop it up on the side of the bucket. The mice will jump onto the jar the jar spins and they drop into the water and drown. You'll catch more mice than you know what to do with.
Hi Mac! I used a trap like this when I first arrived at the cabin. It worked some and I caught a few mice, but I hated emptying it. I kept it in the cellar as that is where I saw most evidence of mice. I did not like the idea of bucket trap in the main part of the cabin. I have had the most success with mixing flour with baking soda, the old-fashioned traps with a bit of hard sausage on them and having the ermine on the property. Mice are the worst! Thank you though for writing this out for others to see, and for watching. 🤗
@@AloneinRemoteAlaska If you use antifreeze it pickles the mice but then you need to burn the mice. I imagine that may not be practical as a dog owner though.
There's a product on the market called RidX for rats and mice, moles,etc.
It's safe for humans, dogs, children, etc.

It may be butterfly larvaes or caterpillar making the spooky net on the ground. We have had a couple of days of summer here. 25 degrees celcius. Absolutely wonderful, then the coming week we will be back to normal again.
Hi Alone! Such a beautiful video! Thank you for sharing. I'd definitely use a larger size gravel and gravel the drive and front parking area so the snow melt water will drain down and keep your vehicle out of the deep mud on top the larger gravel. Then on the rest front I'd plant some good solid ground cover plants that will build a strong netting under the dirt and will help prevent erosion that the snow melt waters can still drain but you won't have so much mud on the blank canvas areas you don't want to gravel. Maybe Bugleweed, Arnica, and Orange Hawkweed which will also add some beautiful color? All very popular and available in Alaska. Youre looking so good! God Bless you!
Moving to alaska by the end of this year, I have two iggys (Italian greyhounds) I have to bring them. Any advice on pet care would be greatly appreciated.
I agree with everything you say but one thing; there is no way I'm taking a dump in an outhouse at 40 below.
I'm no tenderfoot, but at 59 I'd rather be in a warm place and take dump in a 5gal bucket and cover with lime like we used to do when we were building new houses.
I had no intentions of sounding crude, so please don' take it that way.🙂
When I lived in Michigan, I saw mostly men and boys snowmobiling on the lakes as they were thawing. The ice was very thin and unstable, and water was now covering a lot of the unmelted ice. Several times a spring you would hear of someone falling through the ice, snowmobile and all and drowning. I often wondered how they could be so careless, and the answer is quit simple. After living and playing in those conditions year after year you loose your fear. After all you have done this your whole life, what could possibly happen? When you loose your fear, respect of something, you're in trouble. It is only a matter of time before something happens. It never fails.

I,am trained in black fly and mosquito control. With mosquito control you have to clean up your land so there's less standing water and if you can,t remove it treat it with BTI.thats what in the dunks you tryed. You didn,t use them right and that's why they didn,t help.the standing water needs to be treated..like the pond.
Just a old tin can can have dozens of mosquito larve.old vehicles can have them too.anything that can hold water breeds them.

I know little about Alaska, just what I watch on you tube videos. i live in Arkansas, so bat houses work great here, I don't know if y'a'll even have bats that far north.. Bat houses work, they eat thousands a night.
Would you put your present wood stove in the bunk house if you get a new one? I have no idea if it would work there, but it's just an idea. I love to see how the property is coming along.

I really admire you living alone and in Alaska. You’re very self sufficient and energetic. You have a wonderful view! Kenai is a beautiful dog! I have a white German Shepherd and she’s such a good dog. Tina with Home Free Alaska wears a device that deters the mosquitoes. Sorry, I don’t remember what it’s called, but she swears by it. Your ending scared me! 😂🤣😂
