I think the cost of the lower unit repair should be factored in, it represents a dollar amount that is absolutely feasible for anyone trying to do tournament events and trails in new boats but especially in used boats

Heading in from practice at my last tourney I was on plane heading for the ramp and one of my piston heads blew apart and seized up the engine. I feel your pain 😂
Had that happened to me running to a lock and heard the noise. Mine was a seal failure and my engine blew. Funny part is I trolling motored to a spot that i wouldn't have fished that day and won the tournament. However, the tournament winnings did not cover a full rebuild of my motor though.
lol i feel the pain, had one optimax blow and a second sling eclip on clutch dog. both motors one season bfl and bulldog tourny yrs ago..

Sorry about your motor. I had a 115 Mercury and had the infamous opti-pop. Got rid of it and got a 150 Yamaha and love it.

Not as large a scale but I just sheared my 25Hp motor’s steering assembly off completely trying to back the boat in today took it off and went to try and fish with just the trolling motor and sheared the shear pin lmao
My brand new boat did that same exact thing. I didn’t hit anything but the dealership tried to say I did. I pressured them and they finally said it was a factory issue and a bearing inside the lower exploded. Thankfully my dealership got it fixed but it was a headache and a wait. Also a mercury motor

I know it sucks, but better the lower unit fail versus the infamous Opti-pop. Hope you get back out there and start killing it again soon!

The lower unit problems on the Merc are well known. I had 2 break on me. That's why I now run a Yamaha.
Last year my water pump went out motor over heated got towed in by three different people and still won the tournement. Later that summer a buddy and i hit something took out teeth of the main gear, lower unit toast but still ran. We took first and big bass that day. Sometimes you have to send it!

Mercury Engines seem to have that problem with their lower units. Sorry that happened to you also!

last year i had a lower on mine something broke inside got shoved into the side of the lower and tried to blow a hole out the side of it from the inside. it didnt fully blow a full hole but it made one.. luckily guy i bought boat from had a extra lower i got for 100. lol but ya i havent even taken it apart to really look at it. it was bad though. i putted back to the ramp and it was clunking the full time. price of motors nowadays just makes me look at used boats with good motors.. my friend down the street has a used 125 ona old boat hes like give me 300 you can have the boat and motor. so i might get that for a back up. i commercial fish too and just started so dont want to be out a job already.

@@SBFishingdo u think I should get a new set up? My heavy rod is rated for 1 oz lures and the 168 waver is what I want to start with and it’s like 1.6 oz. I think I’m gonna use 17lb flouro on it to. What do u think
It seems like this is a consistent problem with the Merc Optimax motors.

Hey chase. I’ve seen him say that he does 15lb braid to a 8lb floro leader in the past but not sure if he still runs the same

In all honesty how do you like the Optimax? (Besides the lower unit lol) I blew the powerhead on my Vmax and found an Optimax for a good price near me. Any major problems or has it been pretty reliable?
I freakin love it. I’ve put 200+ hours on it since getting the boat and I’ve never had a single problem.

Damn this happened to me 2 years ago. Almost threw me out of the boat running 58 mph! My lower unit grenades. Call SEI they saved me
I was wide open, fully trimmed and in a turn. Luckily in this case, the ranger has virtually 0 bow lift so not too scary.

How many hours on it? Very few people make any money on this hobby especially with gas and hotel fees. Good luck this year!
It has 560 ish hours on it.
I know I likely won’t make any money, especially fishing bfls…but it’s a more than 0% chance so I’ll take it because it’s what I love to do.
