Behind Bars: South Cotabato Jail. One of the most overcrowded prisons in the world. Murderers, rapists, and drug dealers. The guilty and the innocent. All are behind bars together. In a jail designed for 600 prisoners, more than 2000 inmates are crammed into cells the size of shoe boxes. The prison is bursting at the seems, and there is no hope of improvement. For the inmates have not even been convicted. Thanks to President Duterte’s war on drugs, the Filipino justice system is totally overwhelmed. Instead of only putting those convicted behind bars, thousands of accused individuals are forced to await a verdict together in inhuman conditions: cramped space, tropical heat, insufficient water, and, worst of all, a jail that is ruled by the inmates. The guards can’t control the mass of prisoners. As a result, the jail is dominated by hierarchies and power relations.
Ronniel Dumagit doesn’t yet know what awaits him. He’s a newbie. It’s his first time in jail. But faster than he’d like he’ll learn how the prison works, what the hierarchy looks like, and how he has to behave in order to survive.
One prisoner decides what status and privileges each of the other inmates have inside the prison. They call him El Presidente: Glecerio de Pedro and his henchmen rule the prison. The guards are totally outnumbered. They use surprise inspections to try to increase their authority, but they can’t change the situation. Nor can they do anything about the daily struggle for survival, for space, for air.

Ronnile Dumagit doesn't yet know what to expect. He's new. First time in jail. The learning curve is fast. There's no other way to survive unless you're quick to realize who's really in charge. There's one name: El Presidente. He and his henchmen rule the world inside this hellhole. This hellhole where the struggle for space, for air, for food, is constant. Until, if ever, you are able to walk out of there on your own two feet.
South Cotabato Prison is one of the worst in the world. And followers of this series know - unimaginable and inhumane conditions reign. Guilty and innocent all squished in together. Rapists, murders and petty thieves incarcerated into the most appalling living facilities (if you can even call it that) together. Thanks to that rather evil person aka the president of the Philippines outside with his war on drugs, the justice system is completely overwhelmed. What does that mean? Thousands of accused individuals - many innocent or for minor offences - are forced to wait months, years, for their trials in the tropical heat and the conditions you'll see in this documentary. It's not an easy watch.

What is actually sad here is that there is a possibilty that some of these prisoners are innocent and victims of injustice just because they are poor :((

You are correct. Some police man here are not doing there job well. Other police man arrest some innocent people they accuse them that they are drug dealers or murderrer just because they are poor.
When my life feels not good or going down, i prefer to watch this documentary to make me little grateful.

I took my family to live in my wife's village in NE Thailand. The three oldest were bored living in a village of 300 with a 90% illiteracy rate . After 3 years the three oldest returned to the US. 6 months later, they thanked me for opening the eyes and hearts. Their mother was poor, but we taught them to live and respect the poor. Now, my oldest got his degree and has worked for NGOs and the US State Department in poor countries. I told him " once you hear the Whos (Dr Seuss reference), you will always hear the Whos. My oldest refuses to be identified as mixed race. He just says that he has a "Ethnically Ambiguous Appearance)
The most terrifying thing about this is that these men havent even been given a trial yet, they are just suspects at this point. Who knows how many innocent men are in this jail going through hell?
Even more terrifying is the government publicly killed 4000 suspects (some international government officials claim the number is more like 20,000) without a trial just to send a message to all, and these are the guys who got 'lucky' by just getting prison aka hell and a chance of a trial.

@@beyondthestars4299 The government is killing those "accused" of selling drugs, so those who are, or those who served (drugs) in the past turn themselves in to avoid state murder. The act of turning themselves in has overburdened the judicial system.

Honestly, their prison culture is the most wholesome I've seen yet in this series. South East Asians truly are a friendly people.
Basically a literal community, although a majority of them are heinous criminals,
While they are inside,treating each other with respect keeps your social life with the inmates nuetral and even beneficial.
And also the fact that el presidente an inmate runs the whole jail and keeps all the prisoners in check more than the guards really shows what respect can get you here.

It's not even that they become evil; most of them still try to fight for the innocent, but they realize they can't win. Translated as: "Everyone is treated equally here, everyone but me that is. I have a special status but all other are under my supervision and are equal."
Correct translation: "Everyone is treated equally, it's just that me (inaudible part), including the..it depends right, it's equal treatment but the food though sometimes those with enough money (lifestyle) can cook on their own.
Translation for 19:48
What the guy said: "Mahirap talaga sa daming tao dito saka..iba kasi dun sa labas saka iba dito sa loob kasi iba ang mga buhay namin dun sa mga bahay namin iba ang buhay namin dito dahil.."
Translated as: "The night was hard long. I didn't sleep at all. I always thought of my family but they're out there all alone."
Correct Translation: "It really is difficult due to the number of people here and..it is different outside as to what it is inside (here in prison), we have different kind of lives in our houses compared here."
I stopped correcting the translations for the rest of the video cause I guess you already got the point.

In many of these countries being honest and "clean" still ain't enough. Lynch mobs are common and all it takes is a angry girl to make claims and here they come. Some have no choice and basically joining a gang isn't a option. Rub a wealthy or powerful person off will also do you in.

The Madagascar one is worse by far. The pinoy place don't seems too bad. Surely its owercrowded and not exactly up to western standards, but apparently all the inmates there have their own bedspace, are feed 3 times a day with something that not a boiled root with a cyanide substance and can stay out of trouble if they choose so.
The translation in the end was wrong.
He wasnt saying he wanted to illegally escape, he said he wants to be free someday(after serving his sentence).

Years ago I worked with a guy for a while I think he quit. Next thing I heard he was caught with a large amount of narcotics in the Philippines. I googled his name, found the mugshot; the look on his face said ‘I’ve made a huge mistake’.
As far as I know he’s still locked up over there.

Because of this video I feel I don't want to be away from the people I love. Really freedom is when we're with the people loved by. Not being locked away wishing for one time to spent with family and friends

It reminds me of the novel "The Trial" by Kafka because how they all are suffering without a verdict and are in confusion about their future and current situation, like the protagonist of the novel. Its saddening to see how real this all is.

15 years and no family member visited .. watching every Saturday everyone else's family and crying inside for your doom .. got goose bumps when I heard this Romeo's story .Every new video of behind the bars series made my appreciation stronger for my Freedom and family ❤

For a minute. The prisoners deal with it day in and day out.
The documentary is very insightful. However, I think there might be something lost in translation at around 46:30. “Gusto kong lumaya” is not “I want to escape”. This can be construed as something bad. What he is saying is that he wants to be free, but not necessarily escape from the prison. The word “makatas” is closer to “escape” in english, which is also a willful breaking of the law.

@@jasonbrody1619 UA-cam does do this. It's the Closed Captions. Just turn them on. You can also switch them into different langauges. Hope that helps! Oh and this works on any video, not just these.

This place makes some prisons in the US look like a five-star Hilton… The main issue here is the severe understaffing of the facility, which is leading them to have an almost 100% “hands-off” approach to controlling the people. Setting themselves up for one violent incident after the next with little or no control in daily operations. Moral of the story = Don’t get locked up here or locked up anywhere for that matter
In my country some people wants to live in USA, Switzerland, Norway prisons because our "life" is worst than Us prison
Yeah, without social services/social healthcare things like this end up happening. And then there's people who say the poor shouldn't be supported, that is exactly what creates these kind of situations, and if they receive money that money circulates back into society through spending which creates wealth.
Tbh the community life in this prison is much more wholesome than others if you ignore the horrible living conditions and everything else.

I got stressed just by watching it. Imagine how the inmates must be feeling. It is devastating.

The documentation is very good. Very informative actually and very raw.
My suggestion is only that, when they interview someone in their local language, it's best to have Written Subtitles on screen instead of translating it on voiceover.
Because, there is some essence in what the interviewed person is saying that only the locals can understand and cannot be translated by the voiceover artist. This way, it makes us feel the emotion behind the person speaking. As a Filipino, I can feel there's more to what they're saying than what is being heard during the interview dubbing.
Overall, this is a very good eye opener to all our fellow countrymen here on what's life like on the inside.

Most of the statements from the interviewed personalities were omitted to suit whatever the documentary wants you to see. Whoever translated for this documentary failed to capture the griefs and true statements of the people involved in this documentary. 7/10

I have visited this prison for 3 times. I joined the prison ministry of one of the Christian Church there in Koronadal and it broke my heart with the situation s of the prisoners there. That church has help to change the lives of many prisoners of that jail. I hope to visit there again someday.

In the Philippines, if you are falsely accused, you have to wait 10-15 years to get your day in court so they can say you are not guilty.

lol I've been to jail for drug charges, possesion and selling and no it doesn't reach 10-15 years, that's a bit far fetched. Most of the time, it's just 1 year and that's sometimes because of the lack of Public attorneys and/or the inability and the unwillingness of the suspect and his family to cooperate (follow ups of documents, police reports e.g)
I've been there, and each and every prisoner would always say they are innocent, lol it's a running joke in prison, that each and every one would always claim they are innocent and the inmates would just laugh it off
Also, false accusations and lengthy trials are not unique to the Philippines, even the US has had their fair share of long trials, which are out in the open and well documented even by the media. You think the world is a utopia where the philippines is the only dump, when in fact almost every part the world is crooked, even the US and europe.
I tell you this, if you are poor and have no money, it will only take an innocent and falsely accused man a year before they get sentenced in court. But if you are rich and powerful, even if you are guilty, and everybody knows you are guilty, even if the dead could speak and say that you were guilty, now THAT will take 10-15 years before they sentence you not guilty. see Vizconde Massacre/Hubert Webb et. al vs people of the PH

I've been to jail, and inmates have weekly-monthly visits from PAO or Public defenders to help with their cases. Now the main problem is the lack of public attorneys, and pro bono lawyers.

Jails around the world are SO different... I've always imagined bars and cells, but watching these documentaries, some jails in some countries are like a town under military rule..
What these videos have shown me, and what honestly makes sense (in a sad, sad way) is the poorest countries have the worst prison systems. They can be overcrowded to where they're locked inside with 30 men, or they can be literal cities where you're just locked inside. But those places seem to not have enough money to really put a dent into the substance abuse issues so they make their sentences insane, hoping to scare people out. Too bad it doesn't help when someone's addicted with no way to get help.
And then there's extremely rich countries that have the funds to make prisons into essentially rehabilitative hotels. They do the best of any system.
And right in between you have the mess of American jails, where we try to help before jail but then don't help once you're in.

Could have very well been pardoned because of the pandemic, as in 2020, 10,000 Filipino inmates were pardoned. However it remains confidential if they got released, so chances that they are behind bars remain very high.

Majority of the interviews are inaccurately interpreted and translated in English. Please make sure this is done accurately in order to provide facts to all viewers. I'm a Filipino so whenever they speak in our language I wonder why it says differently. Just an honest feedback.

This is a wake-up call for all of us. Our country's justice system is deplorable, but no one does anything about it and no one appears to care. This is an issue that must be addressed. Yes, they committed a crime and deserve harsh punishment, but that doesn't mean justice should be as slow as a turtle in convicting them all. If no money is involved, I doubt the prisoner will ever receive justice.
