- More traveling in the Philippines with our next stop in the Sagada Province up in the mountains. We are here to explore as we shoot for Matanglawin and visit the different caves spelunking, waterfalls, rice terraces and best parts of the province. Today we come across a graveyard and also the famous hanging coffins as we hike through the Echo valley in search for the dead! Vlog 292

Cinematography is improving by leaps and bounds. Maybe put some context where you are traveling, next time....? I know this is series, but still... Also, you left us hanging with your question why they hang those coffins. I'm a Filipino living in the US for more than a decade, so it's nice seeing these places. Keep the videos coming!
it's mostly traditional and it prevents the body from rotting away from worms along with some preserving agent that they put on the deceased. these are the filipino version of mummies only perfectly preserved yet hard to get to.
+Joey Cainong Hanging coffins is a unique funeral/burial custom practiced by the Igorots many years ago. When a person dies, he/she is put in the coffin in a fetal position due to the belief that a person should exit the world in the same position that he/she entered it. It's commonly thought that by placing the coffin high on the side of a cliff, the deceased would be put much closer to heaven or their ancestral spirits. However, there were also some practical reasons why they hang them on a cliff. For instance, it has been suggested that the Igorots knew that the corpses would decompose quickly when buried in the ground so they decided to hang them on the side of cliffs. Moreover, the Igorots also feared that the animals would eat the corpses if they were buried in the ground. Hanging coffins is truly a fascinating burial custom!
Thanks for the refresher, guys! I vaguely remember reading/hearing about this in the Araling Panlipunan class. And I have a friend from Sagada too. My comment was hoping Wil to improve on his story-telling skills. He had said in previous vlogs that he wanted to evolve. What makes Casey Neistat a cut above the rest is that he is a story teller. Casey just found video as his vehicle for him to tell the story. If Wil wants to reach a broader audience - he has the potential to do so - he must provide context and information and not leave us hanging like the coffin (pun intended). ;)
I agree!!! Wil should really do some research especially when he's doing travel vlogs so he can share more accurate & relevant information to his audience. I'm sure his viewers would really appreciate that especially his foreign viewers & even the locals who may not be familiar with the locations he visits. Apart from the regular dose of comedy & craziness he provides in his vlogs, his audience would appreciate if he can add some interesting facts or details about the places he visits. It would really make his vlogs more interesting & meaningful!:-)
Sagada is rich in culture and beliefs. They are hang because they believe moving the bodies of the dead higher up brings them closer to their ancestral. Locals of Sagada and 100 + yrs of age can be buried that way.

Coffins are hanged by request of the deceased. As told by the local tour guides, it's a must that relatives follow this request or their souls will never be at peace. They hang them up there so that it's easier for their souls to go up to heaven. the higher the coffins are, the more pride and effort of the relatives to grant the wish.
