Iceland Volcano Update | Eruption officially over!

- The eruption from the Svartsengi system on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland is over after a 54-day-long eruption.
Since magma accumulation has been ongoing during the eruption, and volume is now well over the level needed to cause eruptions previously, it seems like another eruption might be just around the corner.
But, since this is geology, there are some different predictions floating around from our experts with some saying the next eruption will occur in a few days while others in a few weeks.

This system seems to raise more questions as the different eruptions happen without providing many answers. I hope that the data provided will help Iceland to handle future challenges.
The spirit of Icelanders is inspiring…. Especially the drivers of the bulldozers who built the berms , the drone pilots who have obtained amazing footage (sacrificing drones in some cases) and rockstar geologists!
My thoughts are with the families affected and hope they pick up the pieces of their lives and community and create a new future for themselves.

Understatement of today - this is exciting to say the least! As well as unpredictable. Maybe that’s why we get so captivated by volcanoes - because they are not predictable at all.

This was a very good update. You brought an interesting angle to us for consideration. I wasn't aware the mama chamber really had far more in it before the last eruption. I've been following Shawn, Silki, and Isak since the first Svartsengi eruption. I've been following you, Gylfi, and Reykavik Grapevine since the 2021 eruption. I live in boring, depressing Western NY, I've enjoyed learning about Iceland for the past few years and you have been a great source of info. Thank you.

hahahaha, same here. This last eruption has set us back to the drawing board, nature is just messing with us
@@Hliarmenn Drawing boards are just that...major drawings, lots of speculation, and sometimes...it turns out to be a head-scratcher about what is really going on..we can go to space, but deep below the earth's surface...it is a whole different ball park for science and those who are earth scientists. LOL...I am happy that no one, anywhere, is counting on me to give credence to a theory! 🤣
Any guess on my part would definately qualify as "totally uneducated". So in for a penny..in for a pound I feel sure that in the medium term the blue lagoon and possibly the power plant will take a hit. I decided to take the outlier route.....

I'm with you, sometimes in the next week or so. That would fit with how full the magma chamber would be. It refilling a little more each time because the rock around the inside is getting softer and stretching some, that's why were not seeing larger earthquakes. Im excited! Im keeping an eye on the tremor charts and the eq maps.

I see this as the beginning of a long cycle. Looking at the geology around the immediate area, these eruptions are the peanut whistles. If this was a concert, these eruptions would be the the speaker warmers.
Who knows, it could be ten, or a hundred years of these little eruptions before something makes a another mountain there.

Thank you for the update. Indeed, the barriers did wonders protecting Grindavik from further damage and new ones are already in the making. If the unrest goes on for years, as predicted, the expertise will be very useful. I guess the next eruption will be in a few days, but of course it's impossible to be sure.
Yeah, it's so cool how good they've gotten at constructing and designing these barriers, definitely something which can be implemented elsewhere in the world.
Thanks for sharing. This is uncharted terrain as the March 2nd intrusion created the pathway for the March 16th eruption and that did not get all the incoming magma to the surface. The slower uplift might have given the surrounding rocks more time to heat up and stretch with accumulation. I also guess it the next eruption will be in the last week of this month, in roughly the same location as the March 16th but I do think the next one will be bigger regarding volume.

I think the so called Mar 2nd intrusion was in fact an extension east of the magma sill, because all the quakes happened at depths of around 4km. So the sill is now bigger than 8 to 13 million cubic meters. Given that I expect an eruption in late May before it hits 20 million probably in the Sundhnukur row. Keep up the good work, I am a big fan of your channel.
That's a really interesting idea and makes a lot of sense. Will be interesting to see if the volume reaches these numbers!

If confirmed then the 1,200 cubic meters during the early stages of the eruption is insane. That woule make it the largest in terms of putput. As for the next one, it could happen at any moment
Yeah, insane numbers, I would've never thought I'd see that on the peninsula after the first eruptions from Fagradalsfjall.
@@Hliarmenn Same here. The highest I've seen so far we're the 2014 to 2015 Holohraun and 2018 Leilani eruptions. They had volumes roughly 350 to 200 cubic meters per second.

Thank you for the great update, much appreciated. I've notice today that the area around the last eruptive cone and close by to the north for a large area that de-gassing has increased significantly, does that mean it is biding time taking some of the gas pressure off before erupting again ?
The amount of visible de-gassing over the lava field is mostly weather related as, in some weather conditions, the gas becomes more visible. It could also be due to some collapses in that area of the lava field. It's not related to the magma chamber a few kilometres below the surface.
Thank you for your update. I know that the magma usually takes the path of least resistance, and I wonder with all of the new earthquakes in the area if there will be a new fissure opened. Then again, there is that new crater, but if the eruptions have stopped, I would think that it has been sealed up by it's own lava, but is that still the weakest area?
There will most likely be a new fissure but in the same overall area as the previous ones. After an eruption ends, the path is sealed up and won't necessarily be the least resistance anymore.
Considering there is only one vent left to push up terrain, there may be even more magma accumulated already. I am not concerned about Grindavik, lava will flow towards road to power plant but not earlier than 14. May.

... but I'm leaning days rather than weeks. ...however the eruption may be dependent on the number of "IMMINENT!!!" or "URGENT!!!" clickbait videos posted on the youtubes to the power of the number of exclamation marks used in the title !!!!!!! Not that we watch those. Nope. We come here for quality content!
Another possible way to look at the data you presented is to compare the total volume of lava erupted in the last 54 days to the magma chamber volume. If 38 million cubic meters was erupted then it could take another 80 days to reach that volume in the magma chamber. That assumes that the lava volume is the same as the magma at depth, which is not quite true as the lava has a lot of gas bubbles that reduce the density and increase the volume.
Yeah, it would probably make sense to explain it that way but, basically during the entire uplift, the magma chamber was actually "filling" up and when the eruption was over, 4 days ago, the magma chamber was already considered full.
I think it would go up to 19 million cubic meter before erupting, then it would surprise everyone by its sudden output.
That's definitely a possibility and I bet the eruption following that intrusion would be the largest we've seen.

I wish it was possible to predict anything about volcanics. And earthquakes. I dont think we can predict any behaviors. Anything.
Exactly, it's so strange how complex geology is and that after all the years us humans have studied it, we still can't predict anything with accuracy.
