I had this happen the other day and I mixed gouache with the glaze. I essentially made coloured glaze and painted my pins effortlessly. Once it dried I applied another coat of clear gloss and it didn't streak!
Oh my goodness what a great idea! Thank you so much for sharing! I've got some clay bobbles all dried and ready to paint--will definitely be trying your technique! Thank you again for this great tip! :D

What a lovely comment, thank you so much! I almost didn't post this video since I messed up the clay pins but am so glad I did. All I did was document and share my learning process, but I learned so much from people sharing their own tips and advice in the comments. Was very grateful. Appreciate your lovely comment, too! Thanks again!
whoa i was looking for this EXACT video.. i wanted to make pins and keychains, and i saw clay pins somewhere and wondered how to make em. but idk i still want to try epoxy to make keychains.
Wow I hope this was helpful! As I said in my video, my biggest lesson learned was to apply the glaze with a flat brush and as little strokes as possible! I haven't tried epoxy myself but I wish you luck! Happy crafting!
@@AWonderfulSheep i see. thank you so much. i will keep this on my tab, so i can check it. i will let you know. if i do it. if i dont reply, i probably ended up going with different material... and hopefully didnt get lazy and not do it. :D
To be clear, I used gouache and it smudged when I varnished it. I believe the trick is to use a paint like Acryclic-Gouache that doesn't reactivate when you add a water-based varnish OR use a gouache-specific varnish. Thanks for watching and good luck!
Use a varnish or gloss that is NOT water based in order to prevent smearing the paint. Since you are using water-based paint, using water-based gloss means it will reactivate the paint layer and make it move/smear.
Oh my goodness, thank you so much! I've been wanting to try making more clay pins and this comment is so helpful. I will definitely remember to check whether my paints and varnishes are water-based or not. Thank you so much for commenting and letting me know. Hope you are safe and well!
i ADORE how these turned out 😍😍 how have i not checked out your channel before??? it’s absolutely amazing, instantly subbed. I was just thinking about experimenting with polymer clay to decorate all my mundane things, so this vid was perf!! also obsessed with your editing. Even though the paint smeared on a few i think it’s adds character and it very cute 😌
Ummm.... so your comment totally made my day... I can't even.😲 Coming from an editing queen! that means a lot. Polymer clay was super fun, I can't wait to see how your creations turn out!♡ Thanks so much for stopping by and I'm so glad this video was helpful!
If you want to paint with gouache/watercolour on clay, use natural (earth is best, but paper works too) air dry clay! It's pouris, so the paint soaks in and doesn't reactivate so easily. Best of luck haha!
You can also pick up some uv resin! Cures with sunlight but you can use a gel nail uv machine to speed things up. Your doing a great job tho! And thanks your tips! 🤗
Thank you so much! I did see other videos using UV resin but I didn't know it could cure just in sunlight. (I thought you needed the UV machine!) I definitely want to try UV resin next. Thank you for letting me know and for your kind encouragement. Hope you have a safe and lovely day. :D
I suddenly got the motivation to make some pins after watching your video so thanks for that ☺️ and they actually turned out kinda cute! I painted them using fabric paints since that's all I had, which are I think thinned out acrylic paints? I was wondering if I could use acrylic paint varnish on it?
So glad to hear they turned out cute! I personally not have tried acrylic paint varnish myself so I can't say for sure. If you've already painted the pins, my advice would be to paint a test patch on the back of a pin or on a sample clay piece and apply the varnish to see if it smudges or not! Good luck! I hope your pins turn out well.
@@Kinhee_nim Oh did you see it on Twitter? Yes haha I tried a different glaze that worked better, but I made the mistake of shaking it, which caused bubbles eek.
Girl your videos just keep getting better and better! So glad the gesso tip helped! To get less texture with gesso you can also water it down some and do a couple of thinner layers - most artist that gesso their own panels almost always water it down. I never do because I just don't have the patience for it - I'm like "let me get to painting!!!". LOVED the pins you did! That tomato was SOOOOOO CUTE! And what in the world - 14 countries?! Do you travel for your work or do you just like to travel - that's a LOT OF TRAVELING!
Thank you for the tip on gesso! I'll have to experiment with that as well! The pins were a fun experiment, I think next time I'll try other things, maybe ornaments! The travel is for work, which is why I wanted to start this next project--to sort of organize records of some of these cool places. Thank you for watching!♡
@@AWonderfulSheep it looks a bit overwhelming and does take a bit of getting used to but you can get started for less that 50 bucks if you go with UV resin. I haven’t tried epoxy and eco resin looks super fun - just don’t have the space yet.
@@SisterFinch Good to know! Since I made this video I've enjoyed using Mod Podge Dimensional Magic for resin-like finishes. It's smoother than just sculpey glaze but less finicky than (what I assume) UV resin is like, but it seems to work best on flat surfaces. Thanks for the information!
Hi I loved this video ❤ Can you please tell that why my paint is looking so thick and bloby on my pins I use air dry clay to make pins and acrylic paint to colour ??
love the vid and it was really helpful! my only concern is, is it okay to use acrylic paint and the use a water based glaze or does that not work at all 🧍♀️
Thanks for watching! I haven't tried it myself but my friend painted her pins with acyrlic and used the same sculpey glaze I did without any problems. It might differ depending on the brand of acrylic paint or glaze you used, but acrylic shouldn't smudge as bad as my gouache did! Hope that helps!
The varnish or resin protects the pin, so without it the color would probably scratch off pretty quickly. Especially with gouache, since it's water soluble, the paint would wash off if exposed to water.
I personally haven't used acrylic paint yet, but my friend told me she had no problem with smudging when she vanished over it with the sculpey glaze. I just know that when I used my gouache, it smudged a lot when I varnished!

Great question! I glued on the pin backings with superglue after baking. (I'm sure a hot glue gun would also work.) I haven't tried baking it together yet.
I think acrylics should work fine. I would just be careful with the varnish you use afterwards-- try to use something that isn't water-based so it doesn't reactivate the paint and smear it. Good luck!
You could but if the poster paints are water soluble it might smudge when you varnish them (depending on your varnish). That's what my problem was with my regular gouache and Sculpey glaze. I've been told acrylic worked fine and didn't reactivate/smear with the sculpey glaze. Hope that helps!
@@maven5653 I haven't used poster paints myself but hopefully the right resin or varnish won't smudge them. Whatever you use I think part of the trick is not to overwork the varnish/glaze too. Completely coat with as few strokes as possible to avoid smudging. Hope you find a good solution!
