Shigar Fort | Skardu Gilgit - Baltistan | Pakistan

Locals refer it #ShigarFort as #FongKhar, which means "the palace on rocks" in the local Baltic language. Early in the 17th century, Hassan Khan, the 20th emperor of the Amacha Dynasty, constructed it. The "Hamacha" clan of Ganish, Hunza, is where the Amacha family's origins lie, and they have controlled Shigar for thirty-three generations. Some of the Hamacha tribe's survivors of the Hunza massacre managed to escape to Shigar via the Hispar glacial pass, where they rose to prominence and became known as the Amacha Dynasty in the 13th century.
The last building connected to the governing Amacha family is Fong-Khar. The earliest of them all was Khar-e-Dong, a fort whose ruins may still be seen perched far above the present site on the cliffs. It is believed that Mughal armies dispatched by Shah Jehan seized and destroyed Khar-e-Dong to help Hassan Khan reclaim the crown he had lost to roving invaders. Most likely, the current Fong-Khar had to be built due to the demolition of Khar-e-Dong.
To construct his Fort Palace at Shigar, Hassan Khan brought a range of artists from Kashmir, including goldsmiths, carpenters, stonemasons, and textile weavers. As a result, native Balti architecture and carving with Kashmiri influences were combined, creating one of Fong-distinctive Khar's features.
