As a 75 year old woodland ecologist and general outdoors person I really appreciate the range of content and balance of subjects. Only found this channel last week. Makes a refreshing addition to all the other Scottish videos by Murray of Scotland's Mountains, On the Adventure Trails etc. Transports me from the Welsh borders to the Highlands. Keep up the good work.

I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve recommended your channel on various different social media outlets because of your honesty and the effort you put in to every video.

More: drone and Darach shots, explaining forestry/ecology that's unique to the Highlands
Keep: showing your locations on a map, sizzling meats.
Less: getting down on yourself or doubting your impact.

Definitely here for Forest Thoughts.....thought provoking, contemporary, knowledgeable content. Really value your contribution to the debate.
Others have said things i agree with such as 'should be what you enjoy' and 'KEEP DARACH'. I wouldn't be put off by bushcraft. And i deeply love the part of the country you cover.
Hope this is useful. Only found the channel recently.

    Appreciating these in your videos:
    1. Landscape shots, either during hiking or camping, exploration of your surroundings.
    2. Forest thoughts, educational content on trees, ecology, environment etc. You speak very well on these!
    3. Darach :)

You’re probably the only channel that I consistently watch, and i genuinely look forward to them when a new video pops up. That’s for the exact reasons you mentioned as in you stay away from all the same clickbaty camping videos and you actually feel like you learn something from the videos you make. Keep doing what you’re doing and educating us on your trips in different areas of Scotland, it really is appreciated 👍🏻

More drone shots in your thumb nails and shorter videos please!

I had a look at a couple videos on Leave Curious and that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid if I'm honest. Too overproduced and generic - a lot of misinformation too from people who aren't connected to the landscape. I'll definitely take your feedback on board - thank you.

The forest thoughts and the knowledge you have and share is what makes you channel special.
But, of course I like the camping and the beautiful scenery as well.

Hey Sam, I've only been here for a short time and I would like to say that I like the calmness and composure in the videos. I like the mix of landscape and drone shots, the thoughts and themes. I like learning more about the ecology and the land. And all this while you make a fire, cook food/coffee and prepare your camp. Your dog is the perfect extra 😊
A nice balance. I'm also learning English better. The Scottish accent challenges me, but I like it 😊

We first connected with your channel by the name. Scotland is one place we would love to visit so that drew us in. But what we found was more than we expected. We enjoy the beautiful views of nature and camping set up. But also have been learning a lot about the current conditions of the woodlands. We love that you are passionate about the re-foresting efforts and we're thankful that you are part of that work! (Congratulations on your 10th year anniversary!) Please continue as you have been doing with variety and maybe tells us more of the progress with the forests. No matter how small! Thank you for the work and effort you put into these videos! Walking back and forth to fetch the camera takes a lot of time! Darach is fun to watch too!

I love the mixture you have… your forest thoughts are so informative and accessible but they’re made more interesting by the way you weave them into your adventures. Doing it while you’re camping etc makes it feel like we’re having chat, which I think also makes more people want to go and have a forest coffee. You show the good and bad parts of the world around you, which makes what you’re saying real. I love Darach, your humour… and the drone footage is really adding “the big picture” element. So keep doing you, Sam… you’re awesome.

Your High Coast videos were the first ones I watched when looking for videos about this hike. Seeing I'm going to hike it this June.
Then I started watching your other videos and have continued watching them.
I love the current mix of camping, just being outdoors with a fire + food and the forest thoughts. Plus your videos have a honest and relaxed, or maybe I should say peaceful vibe to them.
You could always make separate videos of the outdoor videos and forest thoughts for the people out there who have a preference for one of them. But I always watch the whole video.
Just remember that the most important thing is that you do what you like to do.

Sam - I have been a big fan of your channel and believe you have the right balance from my perspective. You have a clear passion for the woods and conservation which comes through - sometimes a bit ranty. If you enjoy what you do, you will be successful. Forest thoughts gets a thumbs up from me - always good to learn more. So you entertain, bring the Scottish outdoors to the world and educate at the same time. I suppose you could be less hard on yourself and self depreciating. You are good at what you do and are carving out a really niche channel. Love it, thank you for the content and keep it coming. What do you want from the channel? After all it is yours to do as you feel.

Mate, just keep doing what you’re doing - that’s the reason I follow you to be honest. Your videos and content are proper, no nonsense stuff 👍🏻 Personally, I enjoy watching because of your straight forward attitude towards bushcrafting - no farting around with daft sponsors/click bait or “”I survived 24hrs in a bin bag” type stuff. Call me simple, but it’s the basic shelters or hammocks, fires and food that keeps me coming back and I recommend your channel to anyone that will listen 👌🏻 I’ve been unable to get out properly for at least a year and am slowly getting back out there, so I’ve been living outdoors vicariously through yourselves and others recently 😂 So keep it up pal and just be you 👍🏻

Dear Sam, you asked the audience for feedback. So here's mine: I especially love your videos about traveling to other countries and wandering and spending time in nature there (especially the Scandinavian ones). I like the style of your videos because bushcraft skills and equipment are included, but you rarely make it as the main topic. Too many others are already doing that. Your videos are of a good length to watch. It always enriches my breakfast time on the weekends. ☕😉 I usually watch your videos with my dog. 🐺 And Yrsa is really always fascinated by your voice and of course Darach too. 😂❤️
I also always watch your special "forest thoughts", which are very informative, even if I don't always understand everything correctly as a simple German because of the scientific language. 🥴😉 But I always learn a lot about nature, wild animals and foresting and reforestation. 👌🏼
And at this point I would also like to say thank you for spending so much energy and time to create the videos. There's a lot of work involved and it's nice for everyone watching that you're doing this for us. 🙏🏼
So Yrsa and me, we like the whole concept of "Highland Woodsman" and ask you to just go on as before. Kind regards from Thuringia in Germany 🙋🏼‍♀️🐺😊

I have just discovered this excellent channel. My black Labrador 'Bobby' watches your videos for the 'Darach' content. The wife and I love the history and wildlife content. We love your 'Forest Thoughts'. You call them rants....We don't see that, we see and feel your passion, empathy and intelligence. It is really refreshing to hear what you have to say. I have had the privilege of stalking invasive deer species (Sika) in ancient Caledonian Forest. So, I understand your concerns about land use. I feel the same about my native Dartmoor and the Shropshire Hills. Many people think that wilderness places are untouched wild habitats, they have no idea that often these environments have been shaped and continued to be shaped/exploited by man for financial gain. Your storytelling style reminds me of the late great Scottish writer and environmentalist Ronnie Rose. Please, keep up the amazing work!

Hey! first of: thank you for trying to stay away from the echo-chamber of outdoor/bushcrafting youtube. If I could offer a suggestion: why not go down the down the methods and techniques specific to your area? I suspect a lot of your viewership will be international, so there would be a lot to learn from that. I'm originally from Portugal, and I've gone down that rabbit whole: there's a few less common trapping techniques that were different from anything I learned from bushcrafting books/videos, for example; another thing we do in my neck of the woods is a drainage ditch around the tarp/tent/hammock at the slightest hint of rain. I always wonder how techniques differ from place to place and culture to culture - I've been following a lot of folks who speak in languages I don't understand just so I can potentially learn something new. Thanks for taking the time to record and edit all of this; it's appreciated!

It's an interesting comment and I appreciate you leaving it. I do see exactly where you are coming from but I've said from the start on my channel that I'm just not a "bushcrafter" so it's not really something I would enjoy or really know much about. Our landscape has been altered so much we've lost a lot of those skills and opportunities too, apart from the general similarities with other Northern forests like birch bark etc but there are 1001 channels doing that already.

I was a forester too and I am interested in forests and reforestation in areas where trees could grow and live if nature was in balance. When I saw the videos of England and Scotland, I thought there normally should grow trees and there should be a forest of some kind. But I also like your hiking and seeing the landscape and the camping stuff too. It is the mixture that makes your videos interesting for me. Hi Sam, I started following you on Instagram a while back but hadn't managed to watch one of your videos till now. I had thought to watch a few, then try to answer your question in this video. Until that is, you stated how bored you are of the clickbaiting and view grabbing content, I subscribed there and then! Please stick to that value where you can, I am starting to see more and more people speaking out against it. I watch channels like yours for the escapism and picking up the occasional piece of new knowledge. I love being out in the woods myself, but since moving to the borders, I haven't had as many opportunities to get out. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. I get asked that question a lot especially on Instagram and I always say the most impactful thing you can do is just keep talking about it and spreading awareness. It really is quite a challenge to do much else if you are not directly working in the sector or have money / land / power of your own. I definitely think general knowledge of this type of thing is in a much better place than it was even five years ago 👍🏻

I like the forest thoughts sections. I enjoy the forest ecology content. It's one thing to learn ecology from a book but your videos help to make it tangible. For me the camping is a means to an end. Although I know some people will like that. Maybe try a different sequence. Put forest thoughts in the middle instead of at the end?

I came across your channel because I am very interested in trees, forests etc and found you forest thoughts great coming from someone who works in the commercial forestry. I also really appreciate that you have been quite open in that you do suffer mental health issues, I also suffer for mental health problems and find your videos up lifting and inspirational in getting out in nature to help me depressed state of mind. Hi.
I’m a fairly new subscriber to your channel. Approximately a couple of weeks but in that time I’ve watched quite a lot of your videos. I basically found your channel probably because I watch Scotland’s Mountains channel with Murray. So I’m guessing the algorithm came up with your channel as a suggestion.
And I have to say I think you’re pitching it all just right. There’s a nice balance of scenic footage and footage of the camping etc mixed with you talking and the educational or raising awareness of the forest / trees etc. Forrest thoughts is excellent. Really fascinating and interesting.
I’d say don’t try and fix it if it’s not broken. Trust your own instincts and judgement.
And thank you I appreciate your content and the work you put into it all. 👍👍
PS- your dog is absolutely beautiful and I love seeing him.

As a fellow Arborist & Artist I can appreciate your Forest Talks & your Great camera work. I imagine all the extra you do in terms of photography while your out in the forest.
    If you're really after change.
I will say, if I have to say anything, as a Canadian, it would be really awesome to hear your thoughts on forests of the world. Or more broadly Arboriculture and Trees in general. Although I do enjoy the insight into Scotland and its forests.
I also enjoy your fireside talking sessions, it'd be nice to see more of that as well. The X-Fire 19 video, just a simple cook and chat was what brought me to your channel originally. I was looking at purchasing that stove and found your style really awesome. So I binged a few more and was hooked!

I like to watch simple camping, the trip there (length and how), setting up camp, the food, fire and NATURE. I also like the little forest talk. Hi Sam, I actually found your channel looking for stealth camping videos! I honestly could not believe I was watching someone as passionate about wildlife and trees etc as much as I am. I love the content and the information you give, it would be nice to see a little about where you work and what goes on there if you are allowed to film at all. Love the nature shots that you briefly included in this video, it would be nice to see more with wild plants etc and a little info on those? Can't fault your content really, you seem like a really nice down to earth genuine guy that loves what he does. I watch every video sometime more than once of Simon a bloke in the woods and thats kind of how i found your channel. "I'm not a scientist, I'm you know I'm not a survival or a Bushcraft instructor, I'm not a camping expert, I'm not a … I'm not a gear expert, um you know I'm not a teacher, I'm not a public speaker, I'm not a video editor you know, I'm not an expert on camera gear and all this kind of stuff, but obviously it requires … uh … an interest or a certain level of understanding of all of those things to do something what I'm doing, or like what I'm doing, and … uh … so … like I say it's it's hard work"
Lots of nots there. A dozen reasons to really like & admire this very genuine, self-deprecating, perfectionistic guy, then. You've pulled yourself up by your own bootlaces, Sam, to weave together all those strands of knowledge & skills that you do have into entertaining, informative & very high-quality videos. Very professionally.
'True knowledge is not certain. It is humble. It takes place in a context of doubt.' (Ian Dunt, The Three Most Beautiful Words in the English Language: "I don't know", Substack article today (!), 26/04/24). You've devised a format centred on a distinctively different element (Forest Thoughts) which, judging by the praise below, is much enjoyed & generates its own syllabus. Regarding the bushcrafty side of things, there's a young Swiss UA-camr going under the name Awenasa with some interesting forest-based ideas. In fact, his quiet, considered & gently humorous presentation style is not planets away from your own. Deserves far more than a few hundred subscribers, but I suspect that's down to the language barrier, though UA-cam willingly translates the subtitles. Unless too many have destroyed their Goretex jacket boiling water in it ...

I think it's fine to recognise there are a few types of video and label them appropriately. Sometimes, they might all be in a single video, but perhaps the audience can be reached more easily by keeping them more tightly defined. I am no expert, but I guess my journeys on UA-cam would find videos by categories and titles like:
    - Camping and bushcraft
    - ASMR and ambient
    - Forestry work, conservation, rewilding, and environmental
    - Botany and ecology
Personally, I enjoy all of these. And, of course, the Highlands are a special place, and they have some really interesting/difficult issues.
The only thing I'd like to see less of -- contrary to other opinions -- is close-ups of meat! I'm a vegetarian, though! :)

    • @HighlandWoodsman
      @HighlandWoodsman  3 місяці тому +1

There have been a few messages over the last few years. Nothing too severe - most of it comes from a good place I think and not understanding proper fire management. I always try to show and / or explain how and why I am having a fire where I can 👍🏻

    • @BarlowsOnTour
      @BarlowsOnTour 3 місяці тому

@@HighlandWoodsman I agree completely. I understand the negativity towards fires because there are elements who completely disregard the environment and build massive bonfires that scorch and destroy.
