"Dress" alludes to alignment; if the person you are dressing on slows down, you slow down to maintain a continuous line. If he/she angles to the left or right, you must also pivot and angle to the left or to the right. Any marching band, which I was a member of, learns this like the back of his/her hand, in order to maintain alignment.
Thanks for mentioning that Archer's (Fry's) Tn. and Al.. Bgd. was the center point of the advance that the other brigades guided on. They aimed their march directly at The Angle and some were already there when Armistead's men charged through. June Kimbel of the 14th Tn. wrote about crouching behind the stonewall and firing.
After the war, did the North Carolinians argue with the Virginians saying that NC got farther into the Union lines on Day 3 than the Virginians at The Angle?
