    The introduction of balisong to Americans was back in world war 2 when American soldiers was in the Philippines. Americans was having a hard time pronouncing and remembering the term balisong so they simply called it butterfly knife.

      Benchmade started in 1979. Butterfly knives were a thing long before this. It's so completely made up its amazing

    No freaking way! You said the butterfly on the logo was referring to Benchmade’s old logo with balisong and I pulled out my Benchmade auto. I never really looked closely enough to realize this was butterfly and why it got its name. Thank you!

    Benchmade is one of my favorite knife companies. I also have an affinity for butterfly knives. I HAVE a Benchmade butterfly knife yet somehow i didnt know this. Random information like this is quite possibly makes up 50% of my conversations with people...yet somehow this juicy nugget of info eluded me. You sir, have earned the hell out of a like and a sub! Lol

    Hot take here but I’m gonna stick with the term butterfly knife. Mostly because mine are all American made and that’s what we grew up calling them, now if I got a real nice one from the Philippines I would call it a balisong but in my mind they are different. Just like how an American made katana is not really a katana

    Perfecto de Leon introduced the knife in 1905 where most of the butterfly knives originated from barrio Balisong Taal, Batangas. His involvement with the Muslims knife recognized as the kris, motivated him to craft the first knife with twisted rims.

      We used a specific service that's an off-shoot of Google Trends called Google Ngram Viewer, it basically uses every book on Google Books to show the usage of different words in books throughout history, and the frequency of them!

    Real story: before the US had that company the Spaniards popularized it in the Philippines and "balisong" means butterfly knife in Filipino which it originated in Philippines

      Balisong does not actually translate to "butterfly knife" and the only reason Google translate does that is because it is localizing the word.
      Balisong actually is likely derived from the phrase "baling sungay" which means "Broken Horn" and references the fact that original balisongs were made with animal horns in the handles.
