- The Critical Importance of Center of Gravity
Any aircraft must, I repeat must achieve the proper center of gravity (CG) to fly properly. In short, the critical importance of center of gravity calculations.
The center of gravity has a distinctive segmented circle that marks the location. The CG is often a range depending on the aircraft. Aircraft can fly with a slightly nose heavy center of gravity, although the controls will be a bit more sluggish. An aft center of gravity could cause the airplane, whether model or full scale, to lose control in flight.
JetBlue recently demonstrated the effects of the proper center of gravity. On Oct 22, 2023 jetBlue flight 662, arriving at JFK airport in New York City, fell on it's tail as passengers were deplaning. Fortunately no one was hurt and the remaining passengers got off in a safe manner. Still, an important reminder of the critical importance of the proper center of gravity for any aircraft.

You've got this CG factor exactly right...always worth the effort to be as exact as possible setting it pre-flight..👌
Roger that! Tim
On a lot of airliners, they install a pole under the tail to keep it from falling when there's too much weight behind the main gear..
Correct! Tim
Understanding flight means understanding how to balance forces. Gravity is a big one.
Roger that!
Very good point Tim. I have a messerschmitt BF110 hadn't flown it in over a year so put battery in where it looked right. which was nowhere near forward enough. Lots violent oscillations and nearly filling my pants I got it back to the ground. Now I know the battery has to be as forward as possible. Fffeeeewwww
Mark: All good! Tim
Hello, have ever experienced a perfectly balanced rc plane when on the ground yet nose heavy once airborne. The battery is perfectly secured and the horizontal stabilizer/elevator is properly aligned.
Leo.
Hi Leo! No, I have not experienced this situation. Tim
When I test fly a new aerobatic park foamy, I'll trim the plane for level flight at about 50-60% throttle. Then I'll roll the plane to check trim inverted. Sometimes the nose rises (inverted) and the plane climbs. This condition let's me know I have the CG a little aft. What I'm looking for is little to no forward stick needed while inverted.
Would you do a video about picking tundra tires for flying off grass. I fly mostly from parks and school yards where the grass is mowed but not very short. Thank you.
John: Will add to the list! Tim
👍
😊👍🏻 Tim
How is the CG positioned for helicopters?
No idea . . . but a great question! Tim
Thks & hmmmmmmmmmmm .......................... ;
????Hows-abouts explaining center of gravity/mass vs Newton/Bernoulli's lift vs drag pressure (aka profile ~centroid into wind for missiles)
Will add to the list! CG is super easy to check for models, yet missed a lot. Tim
