    This IS my favorite interpretation of this, you nailed the tempo and the dynamics, and let it breathe. Too many (understandably) play this with brightness and gusto, but you light this with a Northern European Autumnal morning, many of the characters overheard rather than shouting their wares front and center; we observe this act rather than being forced to ride pillion. In effect, you've emptied this piece of your own personality and in the most reverential way bought the genius of the young Debussy into focus. I can feel his smile across the illusion of the ages - he's right here with us in the magic and inexplicable wonder that he bequeathed us. Thank you.

    All these years later, I STILL come back to this video as my favorite interpretation of this song. All the tempos and dynamics feed into one another to create a truly immersive experience. The little arpeggios like at 1:19 are just wonderful. This piece MOVES like water you can feel the ebb and flow in this rendition.The push and pull of love and relationships.

      Totally agree, I don't get it why all other musicians always try to speedrun this masterpiece with super-rigid rhytm. Like they were repeatedly hit in the head with a metronome in the childhood or something. These soft tensions and releases are what makes it so beautiful (e.g. at 0:20). There is absolutely no need to rush.

    Allowing sound and visuals to co-ordinate like this is a remarkable first at this level of accuracy. I have been a piano nut for about 70 years, not a player but a rudimentary reader of music. I think this animation is special, and fascinating to learn how you indicate lines, dynamics, pedalling, and so on. The scope is enormous, and i hope you can develop this form. I feel luck to have come across your work. Thanks.

So, I can't take credit for inventing the interpretive choices in the piece --- only for making good choices among other performers' ideas. A few years ago I did a big music project on Debussy and used this video to single out all the melody and accented lines throughout the piece. Each colour could be played on its on and would still be beautiful. I ended up coloring on my sheet music, connecting the dots with the same colors used in the video. It ended up being quite the art piece. This is ironic, because the Arabesque was originally inspired by stain glass artwork in cathedrals, which had very distinct lines and patterns.
    This was the project that inspired me to study music. I started my first year now, truly taken up in the essence of music and everything it means to me. I believe this video played a large part in my choice, thank you.

    I can literally féél this in my chest... my heart is drowning in emotion. My boyfriend played this for me and it reminds me that I love him beyond words... and this piece seems to understand how deep my love goes. To him. To the world. All I feel is love and my heart is too small for all those feelings... Might explode if I listen too much to this

    I would love to know what Mozart and Bach would have thought of this piece if they had been alive. I bet they'd be taken aback by it, and maybe even find it a tad dissonant for their tastes, but I think they'd appreciate it technically. I think this work is among the best pieces for piano ever composed.

    • @artsylovelylady
      @artsylovelylady 11 років тому +5

      I think they would have known a different era in music had arrived. Bach would have spent an hour decoding it and then rearranged it fifteen different ways. Mozart would have used the inspiration to create a new kind of opera that would have had the singers stepping on each other for a role, and he probably would have gotten a laugh out of that.

      +smalin I've really enjoyed your work, but I have to admit the way it distorts as the notes are struck seems odd. Was there a specific reason for doing it that way? Intuitively, I think the rhythms would be much easier to follow visually if the graphics moved across the screen at a constant rate and just lit up when they were struck.
      Either way, what you have done is still quite impressive. Thanks for sharing!

    During my years as director of software application design I attended seminars and studied the books written by Edward Tufte, who is considered the foremost authority on the visual representation of data (e.g. charts, graphics, tables; his favorite example being Minard’s representation of Napoleon’s march on Moscow). This visual representation of Debussy’s Arabesque #1 does an excellent job of visually representing voicing and the importance of bringing out the ‘tops & bottoms’.
    Well done!
