  • Her Majesty Queen Sofía of Spain has been visiting the Philippines, a former Spanish colony, which the Kingdom ceded to the USA in 1898 after the Spanish-American War was lost for Spain. The Spanish Queen arrived on 1st July and left the archipelago on 7th July 2012. It was her third visit to the Philippines after 2002 and 2003. She has visited different development and relief project carried out by Spanish aid workers, local NGOs, religious institutions and UN agencies, especially the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) to whose Millennium Development Goals Spain has made great contributions.
Doña Sofía's journey reflects Spain's wish to accompany the Philippines in its sustainable development. Cooperative relations between the Philippines and Spain date back to 1974. Over recent years, Spain has become one of the country's largest donors. The official development assistance from Spain to the Philippines has averaged 30 million € per year between 2006 and 2010. The main Spanish cooperation programmes have targeted the areas of democratic governance, health, education, relief, climate change and support the peace process in Mindanao.
In this report Queen Sofia of Spain visited the University of Santo Tomas. The university was founded in 1611 by Spanish Dominican friars when the Philippines was a colony of Spain was just one of Sofia's many stops.

Filipinas, lloro mis paisanos olvidan idioma mis mayores.

@@Ericson-vk6bx And yet, Ironically we (Filipinos) were the most loyal Spanish dependency/colony ever. Even more so than Latin America. There is a reason why we never joined the revolutions and independence movements in Latin America in the 1810's and 1820's. We never left Spain's side until 1899 when they were forced to give up us ( The Captaincy General of the Philippines/Capitanía General de Filipinas) to the USA in the treaty of Paris after Spain's defeat in the Spanish-American war.

It's those Kingdom/Tribe leaders who chose to convert like Rajah Sulayman & others. They started the Principalia that's why we have Don & Donya's, The mixing of Spanish and Native Filipinos started with them why don't other Filipinos think about that & blame the Tribe leaders instead and not the rest of the Filipinos. They chose & accept the Christinianity or the Change of Culture. It took hundred of years but still has strong ties because our past ancestors embrace the new culture.

  • @impinai79

Our culture still an Asian, Mexican, and Hispanic and that's the reality of it. If you de-Hispanized then you have to get rid all of those related to Hispanic in our culture. Philippines, Filipinos, Surnames, Religion, Buildings, Food, Music, everything that exist during the Spanish and Mexican. You want to remove that to a Filipino person. If you notice there's a lot of European countries invaded in Europe even during the Spanish-American war.

Proud Filipina, thanks for defending our Hispanic Culture and Colonizer. My grandma had a Spanish blood of which I still inherit from here. Due to the removal of Spanish subject in college the young ones would totally became not knowledgeable that once our country became one among the Spanish speaking Nation. The Spaniards are the one to be blame because when we are treated by them fairly a revolution wouldn't had occur for we are satisfied of their treatment to us. So sad that they ignore us and even sold us to the US.
