Omg I love everyone in this comment section. When I was watching this episode and they showed the PM coming onto the set and everyone in the bar was cheering, it was one of the first and only times I actually felt disgusted. I literally scorned at every person I saw laughing in the bar. I thought I was just bein a buzzkill but I guess a lot of us can sympathize with someone being publicly humiliated.
I swear!!! That’s what was really vile, there’s been soooo many times that I can’t count that something tragic has happened to someone and jokes and memes are flying around, this world has distanced themselves so much from their natural born instincts of living by a love ethic.
I had a teacher who liked the show and played this episode for us. I remember everyone just laughing at the scene where the PM did it with the pig, but slowly that all faded as they became uncomfortable. Just like the audience in the show.
I agree. WHY THIS. If they wanted people to get the gist of what this show centers on, they shouldn't have come strong. Because I just watched this earlier for the first time, and I was just baffled and shocked. I was the same as before watching it, with no clue what it's about, but now horrified and barely functioning. But besides all that, this was a REALLY great episode. The fact that it managed to keep me on the edge of my seat, with my heart pumping was extraordinary! And the Prime Minister's slow descent from denial, insanity and into bitter acceptance was such a rollercoaster. I really enjoyed his acting. I'll probably check out the rest, but now... I feel like throwing up. :D
John Dolan no that’s episode 3. Netflix has them ordered weird. You have to read the episode number in the description as they kind of go last to first season to season
He shouldn't have had to do it. If it was anyone other than a princess would he have had to? Thats pretty much saying that the public isn't worth as much as a celebrity who were born into that position.
i find it strange that they weren't able to tell the difference between a man's finger and a petite young woman's finger. even with the ring on it. i'm pretty sure you would notice that something's off. damn girl must've had some thick hairy fingers!
@@alinavaysfligel7249 There was like only an hour between the events. I agree that IRL, a forensic examiner would have arrived at the scene IF HE/SHE WAS CALLED. But this is a time when everyone is shocked, I think there weren't many military personnel in the room who were calm enough to analyze the situation, just politicians. So it could have taken them an hour to call a forensic and for them to arrive.
I was stuck on that one to, with todays communication they could have found out within the hour if it was male or female. But even if they were sure it wasnt her finger, would it be worth the risk.
I remember when black mirror came out and I was like "eh. ... I guess I'll try this show" by the end of this episode I was hooked by the many layers to this episode and the ending... had me applauding it.
what if that the villain Carlton Bloom is the pawn of the Prime Minister himself, just to gain his popularity for his longevity of his political position ?
Had the opposite effect for me and I have watched very little Black Mirror since. I felt no immersion in the story because I wouldn’t be the kind of person to want to observe something like that. I don’t have that social media driven urge to perpetuate indecency or blackmail/torture of another person and it kind of shocks me that so many people do have that drive. I found the whole episode impossible to follow knowing I wouldn’t follow it in real life; especially when the stories are supposed to echo real world possibilities. I watched Hated in the Nation after it was recommended and that episode was much better than this one. I still wouldn’t have ever used the “DeathTo” hashtag but I found it easier to accept that a lot of people would use it, whereas, I struggle to accept that people would watch what is effectively broadcasted TV bestiality. Why would anyone choose to watch that??
Just a random rant... maybe someone else can relate? The wife in this episode really REALLY annoyed me. Throughout the whole thing she was acting so selfish, she never once showed any concern, support, or love for her husband or the princess hostage for that matter. Instead she was more concerned about what people were saying about them on social media.... seeking that her husband comfort HER and reassure HER instead of the other way around. So, in the end when I saw her go up the stairs like that, I muttered "bitch." What was he supposed to do in that situation given the circumstances? The one lady even said that if the PM refused, no one could guarantee his safety OR that of his family. So, at that point, he was not only trying to save the princess, but also his family from potentially fatal public retaliation. So all in all, he made the right choice and his wife should have been more supportive and appreciative of that sacrifice. I understand that the ramifications of that event would have been very difficult as a couple to work through, but given enough time, love, and patience it would have been possible. So idk, but that element of the story just really struck a nerve with me.
Yes! I would love to hear an interview from someone on the show explaining why the wife was written as so self-absorbed. Maybe she represented the rest of the country as a person in his own life so he did not even have a safe haven at home. Ugh!
Yeah I pretty much said the same thing at the end but no woman could ever imagine that the "worse" part of the marriage vows would be her husband fucking a pig on live TV. With that said I understand why the writers went in this direction with the wife, to further create sympathy for the Prime Minister and to show that the human reaction from loved ones is not always supportive.
I agree with you. Him HAVING to have sexual intercourse with a pig makes it seem like he was being raped. Not by the pig of course but by the person who kidnapped the princess. It reminds me of cases where the person who has been raped lets the rape happen without fighting back for fear of their life and safety if the rapist has a weapon of some sort. He is left traumatized and the wife does nothing to support him. I understand not being able to see him in the same light as you did before but she didn't have to be such a bitch about it.
Omg, I never thought someone could think like me in this aspect. It really annoy me how the wife was so frustrate and acting like that when the one doing all the disgusting thing was him. I never knew why she was so piss off, when, in the end, her husband save the life of the princess on the cost of HIS reputation, not hers. It's stupid, because, all the people that saw the broadcast was like "Oh, poor man" "He's a hero" and things like that, but she was acting like she was the most damaged here. So selfish and stupid. When all the people saw her husband as a hero, she just was mad at him for doing what he had to do.

@@thomaspotterdotexe it would not be. I'd say the episode wasnt actually very realistic. At least a majority of people would understand that you should not negotiate with terrorists. I read the synopsis of the show and it said a highly technological anthology, and then watched this episode wondering where the technology was because it’s based in our society. I fast-forwarded, too. It was not necessary to show it for so long. Not watching that scene means I would have been one of many to have been out and about their normal day...and might have found the princess in time. I think that scene is the true test of how enslaved people will be to a screen (meaning those who watched it are part of the sheep-like crowd). @@afrahe3718 - Exactly. The reason I think the ending is so unsatisfying is because I highly doubt the ending would actually occur in real life, if it did happen.
A key aspect is the artist's motivation for this act. During the transition from the couple's bed to the first time we see the newsroom (about 8:15 in) there is a voiceover talking about how his show at the Tate has been closed three weeks early - presumably for indecency of some sort. This whole scenario was designed to show that the public is far more indecent than his art show ever was. And by releasing the princess early enough to avoid the whole horrid spectacle, he demonstrated that the indecency was pervasive in their society.
Holy shit. I think you may have cracked the artist's motive. I always wondered what the purpose was to mention his old exhibition being closed down was, but this is a really interesting take
What I love about "Black Mirror" is that while watching the show, you start wondering what you would do if you were in the character's shoes. And it turns out you're not exactly sure what your reaction would be in the face of adversity. This TV series raises so many questions we wouldn't be able to answer straightaway... I would say binge-watching "Black Mirror" might be a little harmful to your brain as after seeing just one episode, you need some time to chew it over.
At the end of the episode, where Prime Minister has his back toward us as the audience-the lingering, and silence watching his wife run up the stairs astonished me. The lingering makes you feel uneasy in what you as an audience member viewed. It all culminates to a long, and stand still take. Invested me even moreso.

The message of the artist is literally that screens desensitized us so much, that we're capable of letting that sort of thing happen.

Unpopular opinion: if you were so disgusted by the broadcast scene that you fast-forwarded through it, congratulations: you would have been one of many who would have found the princess in time. I don't think it takes that much self-control to refrain from watching bestiality (pretend or otherwise). This is proof that our society is NOT so degraded that something like this could actually happen.
God get off your high horse. The point of the whole sequence was to make you uncomfortable and truly understand the gravity of the situation. You're superior to no one sit back down.
The thing is that you dont need to skip that part because u know that they (Netflix) is not going to show an actual ""p#rn"" scene and u wont see the d#ck of the PM inside the pig. If it happened in real life, i wouldnt even turn on the TV or the phone...
Not sure what it was, maybe the cinematography or acting, or something else (along with the subject matter), but this was genuinely one of the most unsettling and gut wrenching things to watch. Usually shows and movies don’t do this to me, but I felt that deep sinking feeling in my stomach. The atmosphere was so well done.
Something not mentioned in that episode (but maybe later ones) is that Black Mirrors is a lot inspired by Guy Debord's work, especially a book called "The Society of spectacle". I really encourage the read of that book, published in 1967, a real visionary work having a particular resonance at the time of social networks.
This episode had me horrified from beginning to end. The media being so cruel was so true with how society is today, and it just sickened me. I was at tears watching the PM go through all of it. :-(
What really disturbs me about this episode is that no one, not even the viewers, spares ANY thought on the pig as a victim of rpe. I know why, it's because most of us have been conditioned to not even recognise individuals from that species (or in fact most othe species but especially these we commonly use and abuse) as 'individuals' aka someone with thoughts and feelings and that truly terrifies me. If we can be made so ignorant to others plight, we are safe from nothing and could be made to behave in any harmful way imaginable and it's so so easy to facilitate.
Stupid animal activists will let a whole orphanage burn to crisp to save a random dog that doesn't understand anything that's going on. The man is more scarred than the pig. Trust me, pigs are not the cleanests animals

How the hell did an artist beat 2 bodyguards? In the episode, it said "heavy sedative, close range, each with a single puncture wound". Well, he's an artist, not a professional assassin. It's already hard to approach the princess and her bodyguards without alerting them, let alone sting 2 trained men at once with sedative. It said clearly "CLOSE RANGE", not shooting poison dart from distance like Teemo. The fact that 2 bodyguards were defeated like the way the movie described made us and the PM gang think that there was an organization behind all of these. Turn out it's a plot twist, a POOR plot twist. An artist who is passionate enough to kill himself for his art, is he passionate enough to train himself to become an efficient assassin? X DOUBT.
Watching this episode, I couldn't fathom the contemplation of going through with the pig sex. It was surreal. It's like watching a horror movie and yelling at the person who keeps falling down while they are running from the killer lol. I just kept saying "she'd be a dead princess" through the whole episode. Trippy ending.
I see lots of comments hating on the wife and while I do feel what she did was wrong, I do understand why she did it. She knew that her husband had no choice but to do it, but seeing your significant other do something so disgusting, whether forced to or not, will inevitably lead to loss of sexual attraction. So before y'all start antagonizing people on this show, you gotta put yourself in their shoes, cuz this entire show is about the grayness of morality
dude this is what i was thinking the entire time because if someone i was attracted to did what he did at all i would lose attraction no matter what but the fact that she saw it and it was going on for an hour i wasn’t even blaming her by the end. If they ever were intimate again i wouldn’t doubt that’s all she would think of during
Well it’s not about sexual attraction. Believe it or not sex is not a must have ingredient for a relationship. If it were so then old couples or couples where one of the partner has some kind of disability that prevents them from having sex will not exist. It’s the empathy she was lacking. If it were my husband, I probably wouldn’t have been able to have sex with him again for a long time at least but sure as hell I would’ve been by his side, provided him immense moral support and wouldn’t have made this about me.
it's fine if she didn't wanna have sex with him anymore but to basically treat him like shit when he was forced to do it and he did it to protect her is what's fucked up
Nah she was a piece of shit. From beginning to end. The fact she even watched it was bad enough. Let alone how she acted before and after. Bad person through and through
In one of the later episodes (I don't remember which, but I can look into it), I thought there was another UKN Easter egg that says the prime minister was caught sneaking into the zoo "again", and I had hoped you might mention that. The implications of the long-lasting psychological effect that kind of humiliation has on him are palpable, and it made me even more sick just confronted with just the suggestion of his downward spiral. Absolutely the best pilot for the series.
Why am I just now getting into binging on Black Mirror?!? Thank you so much for your videos! I so look forward to watching them after each episode. You're a Legend 👏👏
Re-watching this episode in 2021. I feel like the events of this episode mark the beginning of the dystopia. I have a theory that the artist who hangs himself, Carlton Bloom, was massively clued into the cultural zeitgeist. He knew the mass media addiction/consumption was coming, he did this because he wanted people to wake up. I think he forced everyone to watch their prime minister perform a disgusting act on TV so they would question their addiction to media. He told them exactly what they were going to see, and everyone tuned in anyway expecting to have a good time. The final shots of everyone realising how disgusting the images they’re watching confirms this for me. Have you also noticed that he is writing a suicide note or manifesto at the end, but in the epilogue they never talk about what the artist’s intent was? The media’s job was to spin this in a positive light, and sure enough the prime minister’s approval rating is up. The other episodes in this season show that the artist failed in his mission, as they’re about people who physically can’t look away from screens.
This episode was really insightful to the fickle mindedness of the people and society's lack of empathy towards the PM.. Charlie Brooker is an amazing writer. This beats nosedive 👏
I hate that his own wife was the one who pushed him to do it, and then after he did she just turned on him. Its so unfair, I feel so bad for the poor guy. The scenes of him crying just fucked with me, it almost stopped me from watching the next episode because it scarred me so much (glad i did watch it though because 15 million merits was really good too)
Most people eat pigs anyway, and everyone knows the meat industry treats animals like shit. People don't care about livestock species, if it were a dog they'd probably acknowledge its suffering.
The generation of “ entretein me, shock me, distract me” this is what is show in this episode. The demanding mob who hides in the anonimity to keep pushing for the limits that one by one would never dare to do
The part where everyone watches, I feel like THAT is what the entire episode is about and it's so perfectly done. That is 100% how we'd all be if any President we don't like was forced to do that on live TV. The part where he says "I love my wife." and everyone mockingly goes "Awww!!"
And it was entirely coincidence that Charlie Brooker chose a pig...this was made in 2011, the Cameron Piggate story broke in 2015. Sometimes life imitates art like that!!!!!

If I was the princess, I would have told the Prime Minister not to do it and prepared for death. If I was the PM, I wouldn't have done it. If I was the public, I wouldn't have watched. Sick on so many levels.
I'm years late AF. The artist proved several valid points. Take away one piece of the puzzle and the mission would have failed . First off, 'don't negotiate with a terrorist' rings true. What if he had no plans of sparing her life?? and still ending his?? The whole ordeal would have been a shame on nation. Secondly, the topic of 'royalty privilege'. This only works because she was a famous person 'of value '. Which raises the question, is the life of a mother of 4 small children equal in worth to that of the princess...to that of the queen??? Would a political leader do the unthinkable in order to save the life of an 'ordinary tax paying citizen'?? Then the bigger issue of our human desire to enjoy the suffering of others, and when proposed with a choice to tune in or to avoid participating, we fall victims to the mass hypnosis, the hunger to see the shame and suffering in others..how and why are we like this? Social programming? Is it something instinctive within us, wanting to see suffering? In theory, had the prime minister refused, had the people refuse to watch, the artist could have still released her, congratulating the ppl and the leader for not bowing to the horrific act - which would make a power statement to the world that this country does not bow to terrorism be it domestic or foreign. Sure, the prime minister would have been hated n probably would be forced to step down. So what. The country would have maintained it's pride, worse case scenario the princess would have died and he would have lost his political life. Well, he banged a pig for a lengthy time, the entire nation riddled with indefinite shame, the princess untouched to live out her care free life, his wife n family permanently disgusted and scarred.....was it worth it really?
This will always be scarier than any monster in any horror movie ever, since it shows the dark side of humans. Those people laughing in the bar...I mean humanity has become so distant from empathy cuz the internet has made us think literally everything is a joke as long as it's on screen. If it was right in front of them they wouldn't laugh.
Foreshadowing and details: In one of the news segments the news subtitles(or whatever those things at the bottom of the screen are called) reads "New video of Princess Susanna released by kidnapper". This sentence can be interpreted as a video uploaded by te kidnapper or the princess herself was let go by the kidnapper. If you caught wind that it foreshadowed the ending without the benefit of hindsight, you displayed a keen mind indeed.
There is also a scene where one person is mentioning something along the line "someone from Downton Abbey" and in the episode there really is Allen Leech playing Tom Brandson in Downton Abbey
When the secretary said to the prime minister “Hey don’t rush it, because people can think you’re enjoying” I laughed so much out of just how dark and funny it was

I’m so annoyed at YOUR reaction. He was no hero when he did this. You realise you are exactly the people from the crowd watching him? By supporting him you are enabling him. Having just rewatched this for the first time since original broadcast, one thing that stands out most is, at the end when the news are reporting the 1 year Anniversary, the Banner Bar at the bottom reports the "Tillsdale" fire inquiry listening to harrowing calls from trapped victims. A few year later and we have the actual event taking place with the "Grenfell" inquiry in London. Precident. ☮️💚🐝

Sorry I don’t know what it’s called
I agree.
I'll probably check out the rest, but now... i think that the final straw though was the threat of danger to his family in case the princess was killed.

So it could have taken them an hour to call a forensic and for them to arrive.
I was stuck on that one to, with todays communication they could have found out within the hour if it was male or female. But even if they were sure it wasnt her finger, would it be worth the risk.

@@runningcoyote9972 fuck off
Had the opposite effect for me and I have watched very little Black Mirror since.
Felt the same. Fuck that bitch.

X DOUBT.
this, and the way they didnt bother to check the fingerprint were plot holes i guess
If it were my husband, I probably wouldn’t have been able to have sex with him again for a long time at least but sure as hell I would’ve been by his side, provided him immense moral support and wouldn’t have made this about me.
it's fine if she didn't wanna have sex with him anymore but to basically treat him like shit when he was forced to do it and he did it to protect her is what's fucked up

this episode made me feel sick for like 2 days after watching lmao

I've always liked the PM. They worked hard to get where they are. The royalty just come out of a vagina to get where they are
@@tellercamille8080 good way of putting it
"Walk in the pork" was brilliant
I hate that his own wife was the one who pushed him to do it, and then after he did she just turned on him. Its so unfair, I feel so bad for the poor guy. The scenes of him crying just fucked with me, it almost stopped me from watching the next episode because it scarred me so much (glad i did watch it though because 15 million merits was really good too)
That's what women are . Disgusting creatures
I don’t blame her honestly
@@Umaldahash Why?
It seemed like no one in the episode ever thought "That poor, violated pig." lol
Lied
@@xxy9530 ??
Most people eat pigs anyway, and everyone knows the meat industry treats animals like shit. People don't care about livestock species, if it were a dog they'd probably acknowledge its suffering.
The generation of “ entretein me, shock me, distract me” this is what is show in this episode. The demanding mob who hides in the anonimity to keep pushing for the limits that one by one would never dare to do
It's a lord of the flies homage, a quite apt one too.
The part where everyone watches, I feel like THAT is what the entire episode is about and it's so perfectly done.
That is 100% how we'd all be if any President we don't like was forced to do that on live TV.
The part where he says "I love my wife." and everyone mockingly goes "Awww!!"
It’s funny because David Cameron pretty much already did that...
And it was entirely coincidence that Charlie Brooker chose a pig...this was made in 2011, the Cameron Piggate story broke in 2015. Sometimes life imitates art like that!!!!!
I tried to blow the fucking hair off my screen
What did he do? Curious...
This episode was one of the the hardest pieces of entertainment I've ever watched in my life. It was the first episode of Black Mirror I ever watched, and I warn people about this episode when I tell them they should watch Black Mirror. I remember, when it was the talk of the water cooler, we called it "The Pig Episode". The ending, though, was the hardest part to watch of all.
I feel u. I've only watched this episode once because I feel it's to mucho for me. I felt uncomfortable and kinda disgusted. But I totally got the message.
pretty ironic that an episode called "The pig episode" is an episode where the big victim of this story is the latest thing the episode give a shit about 😒😒😒😒😡😡
I’ve watched a few episodes plus this one, and this one literally gave me a trauma.
Subscribed. Never so far have i seen someone be so thorough on all levels reviewing something, without any bullshit and fake PS4 giveaways and whatnot. Thanks, keep it up dude
was waiting for HOGSpital 😂
Missed opportunity: “Bacon News”
Foreshadowing and details:
In one of the news segments the news subtitles(or whatever those things at the bottom of the screen are called) reads "New video of Princess Susanna released by kidnapper".
When the secretary said to the prime minister “Hey don’t rush it, because people can think you’re enjoying” I laughed so much out of just how dark and funny it was
I was so annoyed with the wife's attitude as well as the the people who were supposedly there to assist the PM. What a horrific situation and I could not even watch the scene while " it" happened. I'm so disgusted and traumatised. I was so deeply affected by Rory Kinnear's acting too
I’m so annoyed at YOUR reaction. He was no hero when he did this. You realise you are exactly the people from the crowd watching him? By supporting him you are enabling him. He had a choice and he should have had the balls to take a dignified stance and say this country doesn’t give in to hostages. No country and it’s people are worth doing that disgusting act, you lemming. If it was a dog, would you still take that “he had no choice” let him do it?…
Put yourself on his wife position ,would you be able to sleep with him after that ?
This made me feel like a normal person because I’m not able to sit through all of black mirror episodes! I didn’t even finish this on I found out how it ended by my friends!
So easy to judge others decisions/actions when you’re not the one making/doing them
I was repeating this throughout the whole episode. Most people judging the guy would never do it if they were in his place.
I recently watched it and I still feel sick
That's sadly the point
I needed this video to somehow recover from that episode. I’m absolutely scarred.
Oh god same, I watched it yesterday and I can’t even sleep
Just glad im not the only one who is traumatized
fun fact. parts of this episode were shot at the university i go to now. the tv studio is actually one of my classrooms. made this an even weirder watch...
That's super interesting
episodes like this freak me out. but i can’t stop watching them.
It's the really good writing 😂
Bryce Edward Brown i love itt 💕
11:06 "people are so concerned about watching history, that they end up not being able to change it" man.
Precident. ☮️💚🐝
1:14 That shot looks like when in Age of Ultron black widow stares at the wall... were both things filmed in the same location?
Really like this guys videos. He does his homework to not only understand what he’s talking about but he’s able to efficiently explain it in a way that’s easy to understand. 👍🏻👍🏻
"People were so concerned about watching history that they end up not being able to CHANGE it."
This wouldn’t have happened if the person kidnapped wasn’t an elite.
It’s sad how we think one human life is greater than another
Cuz It Is You Dumb $h!t
"A walk in the pork", this joke came so unexpected, I laughed for 10 mins straight
And then you continue to watch it even after this lol, never thought of it like that, great analysis.
I love this show but I am SO glad I watched the first season backwards by accident because I would have not been able to handle this as the first episode
These videos give me life please do the rest of the episodes
Glad you like them, I'm working on more right now!
