  • A Tale Tells Itself: Tomb of Sand
Geetanjali Shree and Arunava Sinha in conversation with Namita Gokhale
Hindi writer Geetanjali Shree’s acclaimed novel, Ret Samadhi, the winner of the 2022 International Booker Prize, is a magnificent story of renewal, rediscovery and exploration in the face of grim odds, damning conventions and irrevocable moments in history. It brings the brilliance of contemporary Hindi literature to a wider readership in its nuanced discussion of boundaries - whether in families, between religions and countries, or in conflicting schools of thought. Daisy Rockwell’s exuberant rendering of the novel in English, Tomb of Sand, has garnered worldwide appreciation. Geetanjali Shree; academic, journalist and the award-winning translator of over seventy books, Arunava Sinha; and writer and Festival Co-Director, Namita Gokhale, discuss Ret Samadhi and the larger landscape of translation.
Geetanjali Shree - has written five novels - Mai, Hamara Shahar Us Baras, Tirohit, Khali Jagah and Ret Samadhi - and five anthologies of short stories in Hindi. Her stories and novels have been translated into French, German, English, Polish, Serbian and Japanese as well as in Indian languages. She has received various awards for her contribution to Hindi literature. The French translation of her novel Ret Samadhi was shortlisted for the Emile Guimet Prize, 2021, and the English translation won the International Booker Prize, 2022. Shree also writes scripts for theatre and essays in English and Hindi for various publications.
Arunava Sinha - translates classic, modern and contemporary Bengali fiction, non-fiction and poetry into English, and fiction from English into Bengali. Over sixty-five of his translations have been published so far, including Akhtaruzzaman Elias's Khwabnama into English, and Amitav Ghosh's Gun Island into Bengali. He teaches at Ashoka University and is the Books Editor at Scroll.in.
Namita Gokhale - Sahitya Akademi (National Academy of Letters) awardee for 2021, is the co-founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival and the author of twenty books. Her acclaimed debut novel, Paro: Dreams of Passion, was published in 1984. Gokhale’s latest work of fiction, The Blind Matriarch, examines the Indian joint family against the backdrop of the pandemic. Her other recent books include Betrayed By Hope, a play on the life of the poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt, and Jaipur Journals, a fictional reading of the Jaipur Literature Festival. She has also written extensively on myths and religion. Gokhale was conferred with the prestigious First Centenary National Award for Literature by the Assam Sahitya Sabha in 2017 and has received recognition both for her writing and her commitment to multilingual Indian literature and cross-cultural literary dialogue.
