I’m all for this! I think like Russo or somebody said this is like drafting a guy that we didn’t get to draft. Jay was right though, there is some risk but even if the worst is he’s a number 5 defensemen, you still got a guy that can rocket shots from the point that’s 6’4”. He’s only 21. This guy is a driver as well which is rare.

And really, does he have to be a top 4 defenseman now? No, not until Spurgeon moves on. When Spurgeon and Brodin's time with the Wild are done, the next generation will be ready

When both teams aren’t sure, it’s a good trade. The Wild are adding size and a right handed shot, the Bluejackets Hunt who the Wild couldn’t seem to find room for, and a plethora of picks. For Columbus, it depends on how they draft. If he develops it’s scary on the backend for a 5-10 years with Wallstedt waiting in the wings as well.

Spot on Brian. I hope this is exactly as it turns out. Question mark made into a star and a bunch of draft picks to flip the narrative into a back burner team rightfully being promoted into prime time. I've been unsure all day but have now settled into being comfortable with this. Let GMBG do his thing.

@ your seeing a changing of the guards as MN starts to ascend in the standings. They are becoming a power and still are playing with 12.7 million short in cap space. Jiricek’s salary alone for $918,000 AAV for the next two seasons will help the Wild bring in players to plug in come March. The best part, the players they are relying on are still young and they have a pipeline that’s DEEP coming up.

Look at MN Wild blue line structure this year vs last year. So much stronger. Also look at Rossi’s improved skating. We have the D and skills coaching in place to help DJ hone his game. Huge trade for the Wild.

Kinda like an Aaron Ekblad, when he was young.. Ekblad, was an offensive defenseman that was big. Then, he had that injury. Worked on his defense more and became a defensive defenseman.
Plus he’s a RH Defenseman. Teams can never have enough of those, ask the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I don’t have a feel for how the Wild are going to integrate Jiricek unless injuries thrust him into the lineup. I believe they will treat him like the major investment he is. He’s going to get fast tracked in development and training. We need another big bodied defenseman heading into the playoffs.

The issue is the wild now will have a log jam at D in a year or two with Faber, Middleton, Brodin, and Spurgeon not going anywhere, Chisholm being one of the most underrated Defensemen in the NHL and then that only leaves 1 spot for another player to get minutes which in this case is taken by Bogosian who has 2 more years on his contract after this year. The wild have buium coming up, lambos, peart, jiricek, Kiviharju, O'rouke, Masters, and Soini all coming up within the next 4 years in which the only member from the current core I can see leaving is spurgeon who is now 35 but is playing great and just put up 3 goals in the last 2 games with his contract having 2 more years after this year as well. The wild have to many D prospects and have to trade some for a depth C/RW, or go get a franchise center (but those are a hard come by). To much talent is always better than too little still.

Too many defensemen is a good problem to have. There's always injuries and trades. Some of the prospects could be used at the trade deadline in the coming years to add to the NHL team.

Not excited to see them give up this much draft capital for a prospect who didn't meet expectations and might not turn out to be any better than the player we gave up. But, we'll see.

Matt Dumba is a great skater. The Wild missed his speed until Faber emerged. Dumba isnt as good going backwards or on the turn as Brodin, whos the best in thr NHL. But his skating was an asset. Specially coming out from the Dzone.
