  • Worm & worm wheel In SketchUp. Gear reducer ratio 1:40. Drawing gears with some calculation formulas shown.The module is 2. At the end of video real world testing. Some things could be done a little bit more exact, but the gears are rolling well even when a little bit "rough" printed. Perhaps later more about the enveloping gears. Make a better shaft for your mounting needs. I just used a M5 bolt screwed to the axle hole.
    SketchUp Plug-ins used: Helix & SPgears . The worm needs just the Helix plug-in. I fixed the face width to accept millimeters in SPgears: sketchucation.c... . Look at the Pastprimitive's reply. Not obligatory if you convert mm to inches.

    Since these types of things are most of the common things we wanted to print on 3D I would assume they (software makers) had thought about making one already as a template and we just go in and input the measurements, i.e. height of the gear, external diameter, depth of the gear, thread pitch, etc etc also it would not hurt and have a preloaded worm gears that are commonly used in toys, rc cars, etc. so all we have to do is pick the SIZE and export and print! No wonder 3D printing is not taking off as it should because printing possibilities are so limited...
    But thank you for the tutorial...

    Hi, nice video I just had one question , how to calculate pitch radius and face width in the gear parameter. Thank you

      Hi! Probably I was reading these when I made this video:
      nptel.ac.in/courses/112106137/pdf/2_15.pdf
      10. Strength considerations seldom permit a shell worm to have a pitch diameter less than: D1= 2.4p + 1.1
      www.brighthubengineering.com/machine-design/60527-basic-worm-gear-design-calculations-using-agma-empirical-formula/
      Say, we are going ahead with the Module as 2 and the Pitch as 6.238.
      Calculate the pitch circle diameter of the worm (D1) by using the below AGMA empirical formula:D1 = 2.4 P + 1.1
      The following AGMA empirical formula to be used for calculating the pitch circle diameter of the gear (D2):D2 = T2*P/3.14
      But I simply used www.mechguru.com/worm_gear_basic.htm calculator like in info / video, to find what I needed. It really gives you pitch diameters.

      Hi, thank you for the extra information, when I tried to use the "m s p h y s I c s" to simulate the gear they just leaped out (gears was not touched before the simulation)I'm wondering if you can solve the problem ;)

    • @CinemaTablet
      @CinemaTablet  7 років тому

      If you set MSPhysics / simulation tab collision wireframe on before you hit the play button you can see where the problem is. MSphysics does not seem to have right now an easy solution for this. From Sketchucation forum: " Until an automatic internal convex decomposition algorithm is developed...". I have tried Convexify tool but then MSP crashes SU.
      Perhaps there is an answer, but I haven't found it yet to work: sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=56852&start=570
      It is always good to add better material for the gears like brass ( plastic does not work very well). This helped on bevel gears.
      Here is an image that shows collision wireframes. Strangely static mesh has correct type wireframe, but it is static: s29.postimg.org/pzvgtbdaf/Worm_Gear_Collision_Shape.jpg
      Blender 3D Software seems to handle these type gears with no problems...

      Also this came to my mind: 3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model.html?id=967a4ff38b7bf847b7f4217379465401
      It did not roll for me, but it shows compund wireframe collision ok, perhaps something.

    Tutorial? No explanation as to what number/action is for what. The voice sounds like that of the bad guy in a low budget Chinese James Bond movie.

      Hmmm. I thought that the tutorial is full of explanations about the numbers. The voice is from low budget Chinese James Bond movie.

      @@CinemaTablet LOL HAHAHAHA i love this reply. Ok, onto my questions if your willing.
      1st. how did you find out that the scale tool would create threads?
      2nd. The industrial noises in the background, what are they?
      3rd. Are you an engineer? if so what type?
      Thanks for the video:)

    • @CinemaTablet
      @CinemaTablet  4 роки тому +1

      @LT72884 There was some older information about using the scale tool. It was just quite unclear so I made a new video to help me and everyone. The industrial noices are probably from some infernal metal factory. I've been there. Probably I'm not an alienanthology.fandom.com/wiki/Engineer P.S. Hmmm. Yes have worked in the past in a factory, but perhaps this soundscape I made in Audacity using real 3D printer sounds?

    Which version of sketchup are you using? I am using 2017 and when I use the scale tool to form the shape of the worm it looks nothing like the one in the video, despite me copying everything you do. It ends up with a lot of strange geometry on the opposite axis to where the scale tool is being used.

      SketchUp 8 and 2016. Hmmm. did you explode everything? Ctrl down? I "squeeze" using two axis directions green & red.

      Had the same problem and just realised that the segments you set the helix to needs to be exactly the same as the circle you use. In this example it is 96 segments.
