  • Will My Honda CB750 Cafe Racer Project Run? | First Start Untested Unfinished Motorcycle Build | 02
    In this episode I do the first start of my CB750 Cafe Racer project bike.
    Auxiliary Fuel Tank: ebay.us/IzRgPZ
    12v Automotive Test Light: ebay.us/YGpTCx
    Dyna CB750 Ignition System: ebay.us/g1UQLf
    Dyna CB750 Coils: ebay.us/5QEmIy
    Here is my first start checklist: www.spannerras...
    The original owner of my CB750 Café Racer Build told me that he had bought the engine as a good running motor, but had never had it running himself. It probably hadn’t been run in at least a decade, but it does look like it may have had some work done on it.
    With all of my bike projects I like to see if the engine will run, and if gears can be selected at the start. Even if you intend to fully rebuild them it is good to have a base line. And don’t we all love to resurrect old engines from the dead and hear them running again.
    When I checked the bike over it seemed that it had been put away in a good condition. The carbs are the cleanest I have seen on a project bike, and when I drained the oil it was like new. I always follow a set pattern when doing a first start, you can read about it in our blog if you want to use it.
    The bike was a little reluctant to start at first, and we probably did give it more brake cleaner than is healthy, but it was reluctant to start without. Having completely reset the Dyna ignition system it burst into life.
    It will run reasonably well, but it appears to have an oil leak from the head gasket, and seemed to be blowing exhaust gas as well. I also noticed that the gears didn’t seem to select correctly. I will have to investigate further before I start to strip it.

    YES!!! I knew you’d get it running!!! Exciting for sure!! The more you run it the smoother it will get. Also I have found that will correct some of the leaking issues too from the dry seals and gaskets. Man! I’m so happy for you!! Looking forward to watching your progress!!

      Thanks mate! I'm ridiculously happy I got this CB running! There were a lot of "what ifs" going into this first start. But like you say, now she's coughed into life, the only way is up, she'll be purring in no time. I'll be sure to do those leaky gaskets and seals etc before I declare the engine roadworthy, don't worry! :D There really is plenty to be on with for this cafe racer project.

    I have seen lots of Modified Honda 750 engines and one major problem is the very narrow oil channels to the head - and have seen a couple of times that extra oil channels integrated into the head overflowing the cam and exhaust valve , it works

    Damn that's a nice CB, here in Germany the price goes up everyday for a CB.

      Thanks Lukas, I really think this one has the potential to be a special CB750. Hopefully, I can bring that to reality. And yes I think now is the time to buy, before they go up too much in value! :)

    My joy at the bike starting is tempered by the realization that I don't have 10 more videos to binge watch. 😝 I'll definitely be looking out for more on this.

    You’re so lucky the carbs were tuned close enough to make it run right off the bat!

      I was very pleased to get it going. I know it will take a lot more before I have a road rider, but that is all of the fun.

      I'm really over the moon it's a runner! I'm sure there will be plenty of surprises with this one yet, but morale is higher than ever. :)

    A '77 or '78 with roundtops, hmmm... With all that was changed I'm surprised it still has an oil tank. A timing light and a carb sync might improve things a lot.

      Oh, I hadn't considered the F model had a hidden oil cap. I thought that was a '77 thing. my mistake.

    Great news, not surprising it started though, mine has been in a damp garage since 1995, new battery and fuel, fired right up, on 3 but hey, yours sounds like it’s on 3 but that could just be the video, mine leaked oil from the tacho drive, easy fix, mine ran horribly without the air box fitted, try sticking a standard air box on initially to see if that helps, you can move onto pod filters once it’s up and running ok, that way you’ll know if you need to modify the pods, anyway good news 👍

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  2 роки тому

      Thanks Mark. It wasn't running consistently on all 4, but they all did have a go! Good idea about setting up with an airbox first, but I have a long way to go before then. I am going to have to have the engine out to look at the oil leak from the top end first.

    Can I offer a piece of advise....it is advisable to flush the oil, the oil gallery and change the filter, and even consider taking the rocker cover off and remove the cam blocks and make sure the oil jets are clean. The CB750 have had problems with this jets blocking up as the hole is very small....back the 90's my mate brought one that sat for 6 year, and he ignored this advice, he was riding along and it started to lock up, then it cleared but one side of the cam seized and snapped leaving an inlet valve open, the bike then flamed back into the carb and the bike burnt to the ground.
    I worked with people who had these bikes in the 70's & 80's who told me this is a know problem with the CB750....
    and a little trivia, K5 and later has a extra bolt around the cam chain tunnel, learnt this trying to fit a K5 head onto K3 cylinder block....

      That is excellent advice. The oil that was in this was brand new when it was put away. I am going to give it a good refresh and when I investigate the oil leak I will be looking inside the rocker covers.

      @@SPANNERRASH Our cb750 ran like a watch when we bought it for restoration, when we looked inside the rocker cover we found a loose nut floating about. No nuts had come loose so it must have been that one that gets dropped and cant be found.

    New Dyna coils and electronic ignition, modern reg/rec and other electronics. Plus Hagon shocks and new tires. Someone did some work on that bike. Is it an F model?

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  2 роки тому

      Yeah the guy I bought it off was on the path to making a seriously good honda cafe racer, pretty much no expense spared with what he did up to the point of stopping. Hopefully I can finish it off into a very nice bike. It is indeed an F model :)

      @SPANNERRASH  2 роки тому

      Thanks! Just wanted to see if it would run at all here, very pleased it did! The carbs still need a good fettle for sure, in the next video I start it up again briefly and it appears to run on a different 3 cylinders 😂 I'll hopefully figure it out!

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  2 роки тому

      Yes it wasn't running on all cylinders consistently. I only wanted to make sure it would run. Past bikes that I have resurected, if you look at the back catalogue, always seem to run crap at first. But I have put many miles on the Triumphs and the other CB's once I had them fettled. We'll have to see how this one works out.

      I assumed it was a standard CB750F hub. I will have to take a closer look when I see a standard bike. I will be surprised if it is off something else.
