>Picks the hardest difficult because of his hubris >Bites more than he can chew Congrats, you just had the true WW1 experience when everyone assumed it would be "over by Christmas’ (1914)"
Thanks for warning us about the difficulty issues. For a first playtrough I decided to go with Soldier, without checkpoints. The fun I'm having is great. Finally I get to feel the pressure of the survival-horror as the genre intends it. Thanks again for that, because I know I would've initially gone for Veteran and made my experience miserable.
@@metaverse9883That doesn't ruin experience really, it can be argued that when a game is at its most challenging it is the intended difficulty for the game. With some exceptions of course, like WaW's grenade spam on veteran is still bullshit. But this is like playing expert realism even though you're new at a game. In a sense it is one of the intended experiences, but not the one meant for beginners. So it doesn't really ruin anything, it's just not what one would expect on a first run.
@danielgeronimo5538 Sometimes a challenge is too much for the player to the point where it's unfun and frustrating. If there are other difficulty options then it's clear that the player should usually want to choose one that matches their skill level. If it doesn't and goes way over, even if it happens to be the intended experience, it's not as fun and that's what matters the most. If the game is hard but not fun that will definitely ruin your first experience
@@metaverse9883Yeah I get that, but to OPs point what I'm saying is that, there is perhaps two types of intended experience. One for beginners and one for veterans. If it can be summarized by just one line and definition of experience then yeah it is ruined. But the idea that you can choose in the first place and with the recommended starting difficulty for veteran of the genre and newbie for the game technically makes the experience rather valid still. Mayo did not ruin it, he just picked the wrong difficulty to start it with. And tbh games that let you face consequences for choices you made always needs to be respected. Outside of that, the game has problems, but difficulty isn't one of them.
For some reason the idea that the enemies are humans is a lot more horrifying than fighting parasite infested villagers. Nevertheless aside from the Skyrim level of AI intelligence, the mix of classic survival horror with RE4 esque combat is an interesting touch and it seems like has a good balance on it too. The atmosphere kinda reminds me a bit of Darkwood. Which is still a game I've still yet to hear Mayo's opinion on.
@@randomthoughttrainsI dunno, when you combine survival and horror it's survival horror to me. Maybe it's not the traditional RE style of survival horror but it is in its core survival horror. Also the map isn't as big as Conscript it's a fairly less sand-boxy experience
Mayo's complaint that DMC5 locks away the hardest difficulty setting hits kinda different now that we know he'll ruin a game for himself by picking the hardest difficulty setting plus adding a difficult optional challenge (no checkpoints) on his first playthrough of a game. I feel bad for the developers who seem to have gotten a more negative-focused review than the game deserves. I'm a fan Mayo but this just doesn't feel like your finest moment.
The problem with DMC5 is that it's one of those games that requires you to go through normal first but gives you all of the orbs you need to unlock everything in the game. So the intended progression and experience is ruined from the get go. Everything then becomes a slog and it's a while before you make it to Dante Must Die. RPGs like Diablo gets away with things like this because it doesn't give you immediate XP for you to complete your build on the normal run of the game. If DMC5 doesn't give you the orbs that you need in order to immediately become strong, then it would have worked. The issue of this game is completely different from that. This is more like a new player choosing to play Expert in L4D2 without fundamental understanding what the game would be like except for the fact that it's survival horror. The game has real problems, but it wasn't ruined by difficulty. But a Veteran difficulty is much needed for people who already understand the game, not for those new to it.
Nah regardless of whatever other opinions he has, dmc5 is way too easy. Dmc 3 has hard mode locked from the start but the default difficulty is way more appropriate.
@@danielgeronimo5538 DMC5 does not even remotely give you enough orbs to unlock everything for the 4 playable characters during normal, not sure where you thought that was the case but it isn't true.
@@corwinweatherbeeBut it does, if you buy certain editions of the game it rewards you for doing that and now you have so many orbs that you can pretty much unlock most of the combos and make things way too easy for your own good.

It's a bit of a shame too cause he had potential with the doom eternal stuff he did but now he just insists on making uninformed amalgamations full of contradictory statements, flat out lies or half truths at the best and very clear (and very random may I say) favourtism that he calls "reviews" Not really sure where that all spawned from.
The gaming community has become so defensive that they take issue with honest reviews. On the one hand, I can understand that people don't want to see games they enjoy be brought down, but on the other hand I dont see how people can consider UnderTheMayo to be completely biased. Going really in-depth isn't his thing, however his analytical takes, more often than not, lead towards legitimate points of criticism. Of course, some of these points come to personal preferences, which he has openly admitted to himself. He isn't a bigot. He's passionate about games and honest about his experience. Something that, ultimately, should be praised.
Enemies that mainly have melee weapons don't stagger if they were already staggered once and haven't attacked yet. Enemies with rifles are staggered when hit with a focused shot regardless of their status. Hope this helps you enjoy the game better mate, it's helped me kite the enemies in this game a lot better.
As for the stealth, I always just thought that since they were wearing gas masks that their hearing was hampered. I'm more iffed by the enemies somehow all being able to see in pitch black tunnels with no light.
That's.... pretty childish and close minded.. like, it's just a video game... well that was expected for someone who is terminally online. anyway, have a good day
EDIT: I have to add that the game crashed multiple times, leading to massive losses of progress. That too is a reason not to play without checkpoints. Are you liking Conscript? Where you would rank it amongst all the survival horror games of the recent years?
I plan on getting this despite its flaws you mentioned. At 11:00 in the video I was disappointed because I was hoping it had good stealth tactics. Thank you Mayo for the fair warning on difficulty, checkpoints and use of stamina. Hopefully, the developer will see your review and take it in consideration on future updates. You can tell the 1 developer that made the game put a ton of love into it!
I think it makes sense that they are deaf at least. They are on an active front. The gunshots you hear and take will make you deaf if you aren't wearing earplugs. And if earplugs are worn that will also make you partially deaf.

Great game. I love little, obnoxious secrets that you will probably miss at the first playthrough that are required for true ending. Remind me a lot of classic, RPG Maker titles. I like Crow Country more, and especially Signalis, but Conscript is solid, a must play for fans of classic Survival Horror games.
I always respect your reviews and agree with you nearly always, but this time, I am very surprised you didn't love this game. I thought it was brilliant and had such a fantastic time. I do understand your criticism, but I didn't experience many of the frustrations you mentioned. I played it on Soldier first, and then on Veteran, maybe I would have thought differently if it was reversed. Still, I thought this was SUCH a great game and I am really looking forward to a possible sequel. The upgrading mechanics, the different weapons, the hidden stuff. The grounded tone of the game, the fantastic animations....It's a shame you didn't have the first playthrough in an ideal manner.
Yeah I totally agree. I mentioned in the video that I probably would love this game if I hadn't screwed it up for myself, which I thought made for a more interesting story to tell instead of the stand "review" format.

Veteran is actually nerfed now. I chose Veteran difficulty on my 1st playthrough but I only died because I forgot how to use the dodge roll a couple of times and the fact that the riflemen keeps getting good shots on me lol. Also the rats were OP but was also nerfed in the later patches
It's more just sharing what my experience was an warning people not to do what i did because the game is really great and I don't want people to negatively impact their experience.
Great upload. I played the demo on the recommended difficutly. Soldier I think? and even that I found was quite tough but I like that. I was a bit peeved that a random bomb dropped out of the sky killing me and forcing me to redo the entire opening sequence (no checkpoints) however on my second run I realized you can actually see the shadow where the bomb is gonna land so you can avoid it. V cool game though after beating demo I cant say I wanted to rush out and buy the full game just yet. I could see myself getting pretty tired of the trench setting. Will pick it up at some point for sure. I heard rats are incredibly annoying so might wait until a patch or 2 is out. EDIT: Bought the physical copy for switch. Frickin loved this game. Im sad its over. Thought it was excellent. Might go back now and try veteran. Switch version is wonderful if anyone is nervous of switch performance. Solid 60 fps and snappy load times.
By the Gods, don’t let under the garbage make another uninformed and pointless retrospective. He’ll probably quit half way through too like he always dose.
@0:00 to 0:13 . Is how I feel about stealth games and traditional action games like DMC, NG, Bayo. As it stands now, you have to wait until like 5-10+ years just to get even one game. In Stealth games it's worse, almost every triple A stealth game series is mostly dead, Metal Gear Solid, Thief, Splinter Cell, Dishonored, Tenchu, etc. Only Hitman is left. A sad state indeed.
This game is quite hard on the standard difficulty, if you are questioning unlimited saves i would turn that on without thinking twice. This is one of thse games where you can play yourself into a corner, there are nearly no healing items to be found and you will be nipped away at by rats and enemy soldiers as you treverse around. If you get poisoned you may as well reload a previous save. Im about 5 hrs in and i have found 2 med kits total... On normal not hard
Sadly not my type of thing, at least at the start. Enemies swarming me is not really the survival horror experience I was looking for. Given that the combat is very 'eh' it was not enjoyable

Maybe something to consider is a 3rd playthrough after at least 6 months to a year to come in with a fresh pair of eyes? I totally get you. It's reasons you bring up why I don't play on the hardest difficulty for a first playthrough because I don't know how difficult the hardest difficulty option will truly be.
This video for some reason made me want to download and play Alone in The Dark The New Nightmare again on my PS2 Emulator. Thank you, Mayo, I'm really busy lately but now I'll have to play it no matter what.
about the soldiers not looking at their dead friends, it might be because they are so used to death that they dont really show anything cuz they are so dull and numb to it, aka, war IS HELL, good video btw!
Haven't got around to playing this yet but I did buy already. Played a demo last year I really liked, and again this past NextFest I really got into the combat and since I don't play tons of survival horror I didn't brutalize myself with difficulty options :3
There were some backtracks in this game that i understood what the dev was going for but heavily loathed them, i think it was chapter 4 when you return to the trench and you can't access from the center to the top right? You need the flame thrower and medicine to help the medic but you need to go all the way around multiple times if you do not have everything in one go and it's so long. I also agree about chapter 3 , when i first got there i got lost a little trying to work out where to go until i realized the tunnel was the way to go with the pushing of the carts ( which by the way was used only once as far as i remember). Something else that happened to me, i never used the fuel, never got it explained but i guessed it was to burn bodies, but the rats even if they infect you your health does not drop down much and it has a limit of where it drops to, so you can run around infected if you want, my box got too bloated with items on soldier
There's a note that talks about the rat infestation and how after burning the corpses that rats never came back. So if you are skipping notes you'll miss that.
I played it, finished it and I wasn't enjoying it. I would call it a back tracking simulator and I am stunned that you haven't talked about that in depth. I stopped counting how many times I got to an area and had no room for items, really awful decision by the dev. It is a long game and I also disabled checkpoints and I regreted it. I spent more time needlesly back tracking and managing my inventory than playing the damn game. The other thing is that the balancing is wrong. in chapters 1 - 3 I was low on ammo and health. In chapters 4 - 6 I had so many bullets I really just played like Rambo mode...not on veteran of course. Frustrating game overall, has some really cool ideas but the final product is not that good in my opinion.
@@plague166 I really wanted to like CONSCRIPT and this was the first title I bought day one in 5 years. Sadly the game isn't that good. Even if you tried to be objective as an AI you can't say some things are good. Let's take chapter 3 where you can't walk over puddles and the whole map is just badly designed with the player running into obstacles that really shouldn't be there. In my opinion this whole revival thing is boring if indie devs are going to copy RE and SH formula than the least they can do is to create a solid game. I played almost every PS2 horror game and I like them all, some more - some less....what I am trying to say is that the golden era of survival horrror is long gone and these games bring nothing new to the table. There are of course games that do their own thing like Detention but overall the quality of indie games is just meh. What the genre needs is AAA and AA titles but all they do is Remakes of exsisting IP's. Look, I get it, you can't say anything bad about the indie horror games without being called toxic.....well I can and I will when I think that the quality is not there. I pay for the game and most of the YT ers don't. I could talk non stop about this genre bhecause I know a lot about it but most of my time would be spent on old titles. Well this was a long comment :) Oh and BTW there are more indies that are original like Paratopic etc. so it is not all black or white - red or green, most of the things are in between. Cheers!
If you like Conscript, you really should play Darkwood, it is a survival survival horror masterpiece as RagnarRox puts it. I am surprised you haven't covered it yet. If you get into it, try the hard 3 lifes option, it is worth it, and you will die, but it is great for creating stakes.
Smart or at least unique AI seems to be Gamings next problem to fix (other than its long standing issues). Its why I haven't been into ganes for a bit, enemies just feel like they blend together across different games at this point. Also, try Mark of the Ninja, it's probably one of my favorite stealth games that isn't MGS or Theif
This is my GOTY. So challenging, it's like OG Resident Evil on steroids. I got frustrated at times, but it was always my fault not the game. It's long and I thought the game was over but no, the game makes you earn that W
Meh. There's plenty of parts of the map that are "ability gated" because of items you have to find that finally give you access when you return. You don't need to be blowing holes through walls with laser cannons for the map to be Metroidvania style.
I say the same thing. If the game has a huge map that forces you to backtrack for hours trying to find where to go, my friends and I call it metroidvania.
@@surobyk I understand that you're saying "finding the fire extinguisher to put out the fire from hours ago" isn't the same thing as having a new combat/mobility option that now also gives access to an old area. But they're similar enough to not be so strict about the term's use when they create identical thought processes, I think. I also didn't call Conscript a Metroidvania. I called it survival horror that crosses the line into Metroidvania territory and I think that's right. It gets closer to that side of things, without being an outright Metroidvania like Exophobia which I also recently reviewed.
@@underthemayo I was actually replying to the other guy and haven't played conscript myself, but I appreciate the answer. And honestly, I didn't just meant this video as an instance of term misuse, but in general. Personally I am trying to not dilute the definition of metroidvania as people started calling dark souls metroidvania when just having an interconnected map isn't specific to any genre. Supplice is a pure boomer shooter with the most interconnected maps I've ever seen, yet nobody would call it MV. I appreciate the honesty, about this and the badly chosen difficulty.
So you opted to pick the hardest difficulty for your first playthrough and proceed to moan about it being difficult. You must be the brains of the UA-cam gaming scene. Give your head a wobble mate.
I'm not moaning about it being too difficult. I'm sharing my experience that I mistakenly put myself through. I thought that would be honest and interesting. I'm very glad the high difficulty exists. Me having trouble with it doesn't mean it's a problem. I just don't want anyone else to negatively impact their experience of this great game.
I don't know how much of this is a "take". It's more of a "i screwed myself by forcing myself into a difficulty I wasn't ready for." I'm warning people not to do that.
Really cool ideas and game, the fact that is super grounded horror without any mosters , no supernatural is something that is rare , wonder if it was just coincidence that it sets in ww1 and you are a french soldier ,just like in Amnesia:The Bunker or they had a clear inspiration from it . That's tough that you started on a difficulty you thought was for you, only to discover it wasn't. I definitely hate that kind of pitfall. It sucks playing on a normal or medium difficulty only to not feel challenged at all either. I will say, I feel the size of the maps, while the pacing and actual progression may involve the majority of the space, perhaps they are intended to simulate the kind of environments more closely? Rather than being very tightly designed areas, its more akin to what the areas would be like? Not sure. Kind of doubt a significant portion of the maps are not necessary to explore for progression's sake, as that would just make for a mess for players to trudge through.
Yeah.....I played on veteran and I keep losing progress and there is a bug that just crash the game, so yeah maybe play on veteran but with checkpoints.
I totally agree with you. While I enjoyed very very much this game i thought that it would be much better if it was a bit shorter like 5-6 hours shorter :) By the hour 12 i was like ok I had my fill with this game i dont want to play it anymore but it was still going and going :D Its not bad for people who search for vallue for their money cause on normal difficulty you can easily clock 20 hours in ^^
Your whole ordeal is why I play many games on easy mode nowadays, I used to be a "normal or above or you are just a noob" kind of guy myself but if you play on easy you are basically playing on the difficulty where you can make the most amount of mistakes and get away with it so when that difficulty spike or if a game is way too hard, you are on the difficulty where a first time through awkward checkpoint system or design quirks you don't like is at it's most tolerable. If a game is not very good on the lowest difficulty then it's a bad game period. As for this game, I was probably going to play with checkpoints and unlimited saving on anyway, I get you want that old school survivor horror challenge but not all games are made equal and not all every game in the same genre is as well designed as certain ones. I play so many games now and this might play a big role in why I view games as I do now, but it goes to show that difficulty in video games is just a question that will never ever get a universal answer.
If you're a newbie player then you're a newbie player. There's nothing bad in learning from the ground up. This applies to many games that requires you to respect its mechanics and the fact that not every game is even gonna give you a proper set of training wheels. Past literally the easiest difficulty of the game.
Yeah. And I liked conscript. This isnt a video about complaining it's too hard. It's about showing how I personally screwed up my experience, which I thought was an interesting thing to share to make the video more unique. I'm glad the game is difficult. But I wanted to use my experience as a warning to others not to do what I did, because I want people to enjoy this great game. Is there some stupid response video to this or something?
@underthemayo I watch a lot of your stuff and have done for a while now so my feed is usually crawling with response videos 😭 people will like what they like and hate what they hate, I don't really like reaction videos especially to something like an opinion or story about a gaming experience but it's really funny how much people love coming to your comment sections to actively spout how wrong you are about things 😂
That is a good tip to everybody. As someone who loves to set games to the maximum difficulty because I like to think I'm good at games, I can see why others would do it too, but I f'ing hate inventory management from horror games which aggravates the backtracking (which is also something I f'ing hate), so I set it to the recommended difficulty on day 1. But the atmosphere, pacing and the shooting mechanics are just awesome. Idk why devs in general find it so hard to use this simple method of 1 click to shoot and 1 click to cycle the bolt-action rifle. Last time I've seen this was on Red Orchestra 2. But, everyone has its limits, and I found out Conscript's dev's limit when I asked him to let us reload the bolt-action rifle by holding Mouse2 + pressing R for each bullet we want to insert. This way we get 2 things: more immersiveness through perfect mechanics and you don't get stuck auto reloading all 8 bullets to only stop when you get hit in the face by an enemy. If you're facing this, btw, he said that you can press Esc to cancel the reload and that he is working on some basic mean of fixing this issue.
@@SomeGuy1234XThat only applies to certain games though. Crow Country for instance is way better in hard or The Witcher III being best in Death March, while L4D2 becomes a bit too easy after you've played normal a lot of times.
@@underthemayoIt’s a lot better to start on the safer end and if too easy go up in difficulty. You can do it the other way but you may just get stuck in a mindset that once you learn the mechanics you’ll be fine and only realize you were in over your head 3 chapters in.
Yeah its too down but it's still got an angle to it, and there are levels that have your running diagonally so it looks a lot more like an isometric experience. Last time I called a game in this style "top down" people said it was isometric. So, dammed if I do damned if I don't.
I get it, there is a lot of misconceptions around "isometric", despite it having a very strict and established definition. From my experience, when I read something is "isometric" or "cellshaded" it's more often not, than yes. /SimplexPL
Checkpoint system with limited saves makes sense to me. In fact, maybe it could be a solution to maintain tension (though I guess there's inevitably less of it), but encourage more extermination, which limited saves usually kill.
this is off topic of the video but i hope you see this but the people reviewing ur arkham knight video are so whiney and try to act like arkham knight is so perfect and personnally i think batman is not that great or interesting of a character and i feel like black noir from the boys does "batman" better than batman
This game was far too tedious and long. Didn’t reward thorough exploration. Rats were annoying. Stamina bars in this type of game suck. Special buff items have no room in my inventory for. I’m saying all this before even watching your review. It’s good in art style and thematics but isn’t deserving of all the praise. The dev has said he’ll fix a lot of issues in an update sometime next week. We’ll see. Regardless of the problems I have with it; Its an awesome achievement for one guy to create, and I think that should be celebrated. The game just isn’t a 10 or even a 9 for me.

That's good to know. I don't particularly like that decision in a game where your mobility is so limited and weapons are slow, but it's good to know.

As for the stealth, I always just thought that since they were wearing gas masks that their hearing was hampered. I'm more iffed by the enemies somehow all being able to see in pitch black tunnels with no light.

I haven't heard of it before, but now I'm gonna check it out
It’s great, but not one of the best of the recent ones. SIGNALIS and Tormented Souls still reigns supreme
Same as with Cultic... Seems like a good game but the visuals turn me away. Will wait for sale.

1: Signalis
2: Tormented Souls
3: Alisa

Sekiro was good but yeah that was just Tenchu reborn anyway and was a one off.
This is why I uninstalled and refunded within an hour of playing.

When are you going on lolcow live
Frustrating game overall, has some really cool ideas but the final product is not that good in my opinion.
>backtracking simulator
That's half the survival horror genre, do you have a way to be more specific and narrow it down?

Will you ever do a video on the first The Evil Within? It's one of my favourite action horror games.
can you stop misusing "metroidvania"? Metroidvania is about ability gating, not interconnected map
@@CeceliPS3 then you are objectively wrong, I don't know what to tell you
@@surobyk I understand that you're saying "finding the fire extinguisher to put out the fire from hours ago" isn't the same thing as having a new combat/mobility option that now also gives access to an old area.
I don't agree with your take on the game, but I can tell you're genuinely passionate about the topic! Keep at it.

@@nathanfarley4486 welcome! Thanks for the recommendation. Hope you find some more stuff you enjoy here. I'm all over the place, it's not just for one genre or format. But if you like horror there's a lot to find.

That's not gonna be controversial, since GTA IV is miles better aside from online
The rats suck. I'm a man - rats can't kill me.
You'll come back to this game in 12 months or so and you'll love it
Your whole ordeal is why I play many games on easy mode nowadays, I used to be a "normal or above or you are just a noob" kind of guy myself but if you play on easy you are basically playing on the difficulty where you can make the most amount of mistakes and get away with it so when that difficulty spike or if a game is way too hard, you are on the difficulty where a first time through awkward checkpoint system or design quirks you don't like is at it's most tolerable.

So Mayo turns the difficulty up to 11, and then complains how hard it is?
Yeah, that makes sense.
Not a complaint at all. Only a warning and documentation of my experience. I'm very happy when difficulties exist that are beyond my level.
I love Crow Country, Signalis, Tormented Souls, etc, but they certainly aren't "hits". They're extremely niche games.
Hits in the dedicated survival horror fanbase I mean.
This must be a french game because they call bunkers a blockhouse.

I get it, there is a lot of misconceptions around "isometric", despite it having a very strict and established definition. From my experience, when I read something is "isometric" or "cellshaded" it's more often not, than yes. /SimplexPL
