HACKING a SOLID METAL Pen?! - The Zebra F-701 EDC Hack

  • I’m not a pen guy, however, I’ve LOVED the Zebra F-701 for years. It clicks, it’s knurled, and it’s all metal. Or, so I thought. Actually, it has a plastic click mechanism, but some point, the EDC community fell in love with this pen, and they developed a hack to make it all metal. I figured I’d show you how it’s done. This hack is super cool and cheap! Only about $20 for materials -- links below!

A nice video! Seems like a fun project, and you did the video in that classic neistat project style that's hard to nail just right, but you did a good job 👍

Thanks dude! I love that you found my channel :) I've been watching your stuff ever since that "Vlogging Tips" video from a couple years back.
If you REALLY wanna see me go all "Casey" on something, try the video I made about his sunglasses -- it's more interesting than you might expect...

I did this mod to both my Zebra F-701 (before they came out with the new all-metal ones), and I also did it to my Zebra M-701 mechanical pencil (which I can't figure out why Zebra doesn't make all-metal like their new F-701). The only thing I'd say is don't grip onto that mod part with bare pliers or it'll mar the surface of it and damage it.

Awesome had the F-701 for a while now and that little plastic ring had been in the back of my mind taunting me. Well guess who’s driving to staples to get a 2 pack of destroyable pens to solve the issue 👍

I just picked up an F-701 and they're all metal now. They even make a point of advertising it on the packaging.

Pull the metal body away from the top collar of the F-402 and unscrew. Unscrew the F-701 with your hands. Switch the top parts and reassemble both. It took less than 5 minutes with no tools and both pens are perfectly functional. It help to use the rubber from the grip of the F-402 to tighten each collar without tools. Easy peasy. No tools.

The F-402 with rubber grip doesn't have a plastic insert in the tip that I know of. I could not see or get anything to come out, nor could I get the Fisher to work in it.

between the FXMD and F701 is there any difference?

This F-701 still has a black plastic sleave inside the pen body that provides the threads that you used to secure the all metal button / clicker mechanism from the 402. Just saying. I do like your video and I'll probably modify my 701 the same.

Louis Weisz I got a rotring 800 so I don't really need a pencil version anymore.

The plastic part actually twists off. No need to ripped it out.

Unfortunately it’s still not all metal. The barrel is steel covering plastic. The grip is press fit into the barrel.

If you want an all-metal pen, why not just buy one in the first place? Because NASA needs pens that won't melt at 250+ degrees, or crack at 160 below zero, all Fischer pens that are designed for outer space use are metal only. The ones that have some sort of mechanical provision for extending and retracting the tip of the cartridge are in a different price category than most of what Zebra manufactures, but the simpler Fischer designs, such as the bullet pen, are pretty reasonably priced.

You do know you can just unscrew the top if the pens right?

If you watched the video you’d know that he did, but it’s extremely difficult because of how tight they are and you need to do certain tricks to loosen it.

This is NOT an all metal. All 701s have plastic threads on both the tip and the end. There is a plastic sleeve inside the main body. That sleeve is what the tip and click mechanism thread to. The metal body is not threaded.

    • @Weisz
      @Weisz  6 років тому +4

Absolutely! Being a student myself, I find the knurled grip to be way more comfortable than a rubber one. Definitely worth a try.

Why would you want to make the pen all metal ? I've been carrying around the same Zebra F 701 pen for over 15 years and never had any issues with it.

Waste of time. And for those who put a Fisher Space pen refill in the all metal one (they can be purchased as all but the inside click mechanism), as an otherwise all metal. But so what? Who cares? The standard Zebra refill 0.7 is Perfect. Some things should be left alone.
