The most surprising thing for me in this series is the fact that based on conventional wisdom and history. Typically a smaller team beats the bigger team by raining 3's, but the mavs is beating the wolves by drives, lobs and cuts it's insane
there's a difference between a "small" team like the mavs and a small ball team like let's say the harden rockets or the warriors, the mavs still have big centers with gafford and especially lively that can roll hard and catch lobs while also being rim protectors and being able to defend other centers
yup. And even after the foul wolves fans were complaining about even tho everyone knows is a rule the mavs ended up missing the shot right after and wolves got ANOThsr Chance to ice it. Then after Lukas shot they had ANOTHER one

One thing i noticed in this slowmo replays is how much Gobert hits the passers face with his other hand (the hand not used to contest the lobs). Probably why players hate him so much. He hit Luka and Kyrie a lot
Looking back the defensive game plan was fine (mind you with KAT and Conley out there they can’t run the Celtics defensive game plan) The offense and lack of shot creators was the problem (Ant being tired and inexperienced, Conley being old, and KAT low IQ fouls/plays, Rudy’s limitations, and Kyle’s lack of shooting).
Refs let that Conley bark at 0:44 go. Ez tech most days. Stop mid-play to show up a ref? Yeah. Playoffs have been extra physical this year. Giving me 90's vibes.
Kyle Anderson messes up the 2nd to last play. He stands in the dunker spot which messes up the spacing for Ant. He than decides to move to the corner, which forces Naz Reid to move and Ant misses the pass.
he didn't swing to the corner to shoot, if you watch him, he actually stops short and starts motioning over his shoulder to signal ant to kick it to reid. he was intending to preemptively screen a closeout to give naz a free shot
Slo Mo is motioning to Naz, who has been on a heater, because he’s setting a pindown screen. There’s 0 “ruined spacing” all five Mavericks were in the paint and Ant missed two wide open corners. He just choked. Nothing wrong with it, still a phenomenal player, but winning is hard. You can’t freeze up and miss the easy basketball play. He panicked.

Right up there with game 2 comeback of the 2011 finals, Dirk's crazy and-1 at the end of the Spurs series in 2006, and Luka dominating the Suns in game 7. It seems like there have been a huge number of comebacks this playoffs so far. Is there any data about all time playoff comebacks in a single season? I feel like this year must be up there.
I'm a die hard Mavs fan but I was pretty disgusted with the out of bounds call from McDaniel's where it was clearly a foul from Kyrie. There needs to be some rule revisions to stop this from happening.
im a huge mavs fan (since 2010s) but this rule where they cant call the foul after review is pure bullshit...whoever came up with that rule needs to be sacked IMMEDIATLY
It's really tough for them because they either give up a wide open corner 3 or a dunk/lob but this is one of the problems with defense now you have to sell out so hard on the pnr there's just elite offense everywhere if you have the vision of guys like Luka, Jokic, and Lebron.
It is but they just did this against Denver. They stayed attached to the ball handler, played the lob and the help defender busted his ass to get back to contest the three. Now they aren't staying attached (and a lot of times not even contesting the shot) -- except NAW; he's been fantastic still -- they are playing the ball and giving up the lob, and the help defender is staying attached to the "shooters" vs playing help and recover
@@michaelahurt the thing is murray is far away from these 2 guards luka and irving. skill wise and intellectual wise. murray is more of a shooting guard and not creative as luka and kyrie.
@@michaelahurt Right but that's mostly because of how much better Luka is a manipulating defenders than Murray who mostly relied on elite shot making. I agree in a sense because they aren't selling out on anything well. They're not taking away the lob or contesting Luka well. The only thing they do well is take away the corner 3.
@@lubo1358 Luka is better than Murray but Jokic is pretty good at manipulating defenses too and he was also running a ton of PnR It's just about effort and discipline. Against Denver they were hyper aware of Denver's tendencies and worked to take them away, worked to stay attached, and worked like hell to recover 25 feet to shooters. Realistically Minnesota should be able to do exactly what LA did -- make Luka beat you with mid-range jumpers -- just with better personnel but like you said, they aren't taking _anything_ away so Dallas is getting whatever they want I've said it a bunch but I think Minnesota's players were really feeling themselves and thought they did something. That's how they are playing anyway
@@michaelahurt I don't think that's the case. Edwards is just streaky and so is KAT and when you're two main scorers are like that it can be hard to win games consistently.
That’s what the second screen is for. Now you have to go over or under that screen. Go under and Luka just jerks back to the inside to reverse it. Go over and he picks you apart like a normal pick and roll. Switch it and Luka picks it apart like he did to end the game. If it were as easy as a single switch, a lot less points would be scored
yes I agree, there is a guy in LA that plays with modern shaq with defense plus a tailor made roster, his game impacts winning, he is consistently in the play in and he can afford to pad his stats in the 4th and freeze out teammates, he is a point forward you know. plus there is that guy in philly, 7 foot but takes 6 3s per game plus 50 FTs, he also plays like 30 games per year (not his fault that he is injury prone, but durability is ability) and he is the MVP, also that guy in boston that plays on an all star roster, very impactful when it comes to winning. its those euro guys in denver and dallas that are stat padders, their games dont impact winning, even though one of them won a championship with no all stars on his team while averaging a super efficient triple double and the other one was giving work to kawhi and george as a 20 year old, beat the shit out of the 1st seed in the west that had paul and booker on it with dwight powell as a prominent teammate. they are also not jacked so that means that they play bad defense.
I got to admit I'm guilty of banging on about how Kidd is awful as a coach but I gotta admit I was dead wrong he is putting on a masterful performance.
Some of the highest level ball I’ve ever seen is this Mavs playoff run. Wolves defense is as advertised but Mavs are able to walk them down inevitably.
Obviously, Ant is young. He’s learning. He’s incredible. But missing both shooters on that last turnover play is crazy. Naz was 7/8 from three at that point and had like 15 feet of space from his defender. Idk how you don’t pass it to Naz.
Golbert is the one consistent player the Wolves have. Yes he’s on the spotlight but Ant and Kat deserve more blame. They’re supposed to be superstars? Ant was never at that level. He just haven’t encountered tough defense in this playoffs before this series and people are hyping him up so much.
I hit a last second game winner from the 3 point line once. I can tell you the basket does look much bigger and closer because of the adrenaline. For me It was just city league basketball but still apparently this kind of thing doesn’t happen that often. I was looking at a video where MJ has a total of 8 of 9 in his entire career.
👏👏👍 Man, these two teams are so close in talents, actually they’re all are - Thunders, Nuggets, Mavs, Wolves. The T-Wolves really made some mental mistakes down the stretch to lose ALL games 1 to 3. M.I.A. missing in actions are Edwards’ aggressiveness and clutch, leadership, Towns’ long ball and points in the paint, and Rudy’s defense against Gafford/Lively. Different T-Wolves role players stepped up in every games but the Wolves’ trio decided to played disappearing acts. At the end of the day, I’m still rooting for Wolves, still rooting for Mavs, still rooting for a great game 7.
What if they pressure Luka to use his left hand more or attack from the left side, that way he settles for more contested threes. It will also force a lot more turnovers from him because right now he is very comfortable.
That double pick and roll is so effective against teams with slow bigs. You just get everyone into a good position, and let luka and his elite playmaking do the rest
gobert always gets hate and on actions like at 9:20 but what is he supposed to do? he's playing a 2v1 and then on the game winner which is what most people remember, first of all he's a center on a guard, obviously it's a mismatch but aside from wemby any guard has a mismatch on a center though he shouldn't have played the drive when he had naz reid helping and they were up two. Also, people don't talk about how the wolves went on a run with him, then gobert got subbed out and immediately the wolves fumbled the next two possessions, then they get a stop but edwards turns it over and I don't understand why they went on to switch the screens when having gobert in drop coverage and mcdaniels running from behind means luka probably goes inside the paint and even if he makes it it's only tied and not lost
Great observation on Gobert defending the drive too much, he did it different/better with 46 seconds left staying closer and funneling doncic towards help. But the real story is these dumb turnovers and mental lapses by Edwards (2 terrible passes/decisions in crunch time) and surprisingly conley (who seems to be in the wrong location so often on defence). And please, Minnesota, will you consider a 2-3 zone defence with mcdaniels and Edwards on top?
Do they not enforce the free throw line violation anymore? Ive seen Edwards consistently step over the line before the ball makes contact with the rim when hes shooting free throws, and they are never called for a line violation
Sometimes I feel like Rudy does not use his brain while on the court. He is a great rim protector, but not a perimeter defender. Shit like this is why he gets so much hate.
I've heard a rumor he doesn't impact winning and usually his teams do better without him, maybe they should have considered sitting Doncic down for the final play instead of Gobert 😉 Just putting it out there
Gobert will forever be the reason why the wolves are losing because most casuals fans dont like him, for covid related stuff, or because he's french, or because of his name, or because Draymond/Shaq doesnt like his DPOY resume so ppl might as well hate on him for that reason. BUT this is not quite how reality works. Gobert is doing his partition, drawing fouls, hitting his FTs, offensive rebounds, I mean the wolves dont really have a defense issue, its more about their offense. KAT is non existant, he has 0 impact offensively nor defensively, Ant is learning while making all these crunch time mistakes, 2 games in a row the wolves having careless turnovers. i HATE so much to see the same narrative take place like in the Utah days, the Jazz wins because of everyone else, the Jazz loses because of Gobert, lol Also this is more of a strategic error in the crunch from the wolves, they should have deny Luka at all cost and force him to drive in a contested position and have someone else take the shot.
Can't help but feel bad for the wolves.. to be up 18 points only to watch that lead dwindle away and then Luka drains that 3 with 3 seconds left.. painful 😂

14:38 I'm going to explain why this rule makes sense. When this action occurs on the baseline, the initial call is Minnesota ball. Now since the possession was ruled in favor for the wolves, they didn't see the need to challenge for a foul, because they still had the ball. It wasn't until Dallas challenged who the ball went off last that it became a problem. When in reality the wolves could easily challenged and said Kyrie fouled. It's about what action is challenged and which team gambled. The wolves were too complacent. Not to mention i both teams were in the bonus so it would've been a good challenge.

The talent of our team matches uo with the talent of any team in the NBA. Celtics may give us a little bit of problems, but I got Mavs in 6 or 7. Best case scenarionfor Lively's career, he's stays with the Mavs as long as possible.
"When the game is on the line, the basket must look enormous to Luka Doncic." goes so hard
Wolves have been over reliant on their defensive abilities all season long. There’s a reason they were ranked 18th in points per 100 possessions in the league. It’s a different ball game when you’re facing an opponent that can defend as good as you can but score a lot better than you.

I can't imagine how much the average Wolves fan is worrying about this series. The Mavs role players on the wings (PJ, DJJ, Green, THJ) have not really been great on offense so far this series while the Mavs as a whole have been dreadful from 3, meanwhile Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid had two of their best games in their careers in the first games of the series and they still couldn't get it done.

@@johnchua5153this is also the best D the Wolves have played in the playoffs by a long shot. Jokic is amazing offensively but gives little rim protection where the Mavs have 2 really solid tall rim protectors that are giving the Wolves all kinds of problems
Ur tripping, mavs and wolves are well matched on size, don’t run w every bs narrative espn pushes just bc they gotta come up w some talking points
Edwards was gifted 4 free throws on the previous plays.
yup. And even after the foul wolves fans were complaining about even tho everyone knows is a rule the mavs ended up missing the shot right after and wolves got ANOThsr Chance to ice it. Then after Lukas shot they had ANOTHER one
Without free throws Edward’s scores maybe 10 pts let that sink in as “face “ of the league

Did Luka have an impact winning this game or was he just padding da stats and ball hogging? I'm confused with your logic in the other video.

I’m glad Kidd is able to put his coaching skills on display. I wasn’t sure how well he was doing but this run has a lot to do with him
One thing i noticed in this slowmo replays is how much Gobert hits the passers face with his other hand (the hand not used to contest the lobs). Probably why players hate him so much. He hit Luka and Kyrie a lot
Don't know if he's doing it just to protect himself or if he's doing on purpose to hurt players

That challenge and last offensive play for Edwards were the difference makers for me. Twolves absolutely had it 💨💨💨
Looking back the defensive game plan was fine (mind you with KAT and Conley out there they can’t run the Celtics defensive game plan)
The offense and lack of shot creators was the problem (Ant being tired and inexperienced, Conley being old, and KAT low IQ fouls/plays, Rudy’s limitations, and Kyle’s lack of shooting).
did it hurt to make something positive about Dallas?
Great job bro. For people who played basketball or coached. This is great content. ❤🏀
Refs let that Conley bark at 0:44 go. Ez tech most days. Stop mid-play to show up a ref? Yeah. Playoffs have been extra physical this year. Giving me 90's vibes.
To be fair to Conley, he is not someone who complains a lot to the refs.
He's never gotten a tech in his entire career, I imagine refs don't wanna be the one to give him his first especially this close to retirement
The double screen on top with the off ball exit screen coming all the way across is crazy play making

Playoffs are all about match ups and the mavs are a tough one for the wolves. I actually think they are defending well enough its just Dallas is almsot equal to them on defence and in my opinion can switch way better. Lively is unbelievable for a rookie.
They aren't defending well enough. This is regular season defense.
It's not same the intensity level and focus they had against Phoenix and Denver.
OKC has defended the paint better in their series than MIN here.
@michaelahurt They are facing luka and kyrie with the pick and roll lol, this isn't jamal murray. Not to mention that gafford and livley are more athletic than jokic, and also seem to have higher offensive iq than gordon with these lobs they always catch and knowing where to grab the boards at. Mavs defense is better than Denver's defense too since they have bigger and more athletic players
@@michaelahurtyeah but that's just their specific weakness, big ball handlers running high screens. I think Lebron and AD actually would have had some success against them too, although not as much as the mavs.

This was probably in my top 5 Mavs playoff games of all time. What a classic game. Right up there with game 2 comeback of the 2011 finals, Dirk's crazy and-1 at the end of the Spurs series in 2006, and Luka dominating the Suns in game 7. LOVE THESE STYLE VIDEOS🤩🤩
I'm a die hard Mavs fan but I was pretty disgusted with the out of bounds call from McDaniel's where it was clearly a foul from Kyrie. There needs to be some rule revisions to stop this from happening.
Thanks for the vid Ben!
im a huge mavs fan (since 2010s) but this rule where they cant call the foul after review is pure bullshit...whoever came up with that rule needs to be sacked IMMEDIATLY
@@lubo1358 Luka is better than Murray but Jokic is pretty good at manipulating defenses too and he was also running a ton of PnR
It's just about effort and discipline.
Against Denver they were hyper aware of Denver's tendencies and worked to take them away, worked to stay attached, and worked like hell to recover 25 feet to shooters.
Realistically Minnesota should be able to do exactly what LA did -- make Luka beat you with mid-range jumpers -- just with better personnel but like you said, they aren't taking _anything_ away so Dallas is getting whatever they want
I've said it a bunch but I think Minnesota's players were really feeling themselves and thought they did something. That's how they are playing anyway
@@michaelahurt I don't think that's the case. Edwards is just streaky and so is KAT and when you're two main scorers are like that it can be hard to win games consistently.
finally give the mavs credit
Idk why the wolves don't just switch that first screen...
That's part of why they're getting burned on that stagger play
That’s what the second screen is for. Now you have to go over or under that screen. Go under and Luka just jerks back to the inside to reverse it. Go over and he picks you apart like a normal pick and roll. Switch it and Luka picks it apart like he did to end the game.
If it were as easy as a single switch, a lot less points would be scored

@@jeffnemec I’ll have to consult my VORP GLERP DERP and DRIP ratings first. I’ll get back to you.
yes I agree, there is a guy in LA that plays with modern shaq with defense plus a tailor made roster, his game impacts winning, he is consistently in the play in and he can afford to pad his stats in the 4th and freeze out teammates, he is a point forward you know.
plus there is that guy in philly, 7 foot but takes 6 3s per game plus 50 FTs, he also plays like 30 games per year (not his fault that he is injury prone, but durability is ability) and he is the MVP, also that guy in boston that plays on an all star roster, very impactful when it comes to winning.
its those euro guys in denver and dallas that are stat padders, their games dont impact winning, even though one of them won a championship with no all stars on his team while averaging a super efficient triple double and the other one was giving work to kawhi and george as a 20 year old, beat the shit out of the 1st seed in the west that had paul and booker on it with dwight powell as a prominent teammate. they are also not jacked so that means that they play bad defense.

7:48 Another Rudy Gobert Classic
Obviously, Ant is young. He’s learning. He’s incredible. But missing both shooters on that last turnover play is crazy.
Naz was 7/8 from three at that point and had like 15 feet of space from his defender. Idk how you don’t pass it to Naz.
Great analysis per usual 👊

"You mother****err,

He was speaking French.
i think it was “on your head mofo” at first but otherwise correct , that’s what i got
What if they pressure Luka to use his left hand more or attack from the left side, that way he settles for more contested threes. It will also force a lot more turnovers from him because right now he is very comfortable.
1:26 wasn't Washington trying to throw a lob here, not sink a floater?
Great breakdown and explanation.
Man, Kidd is following Spoelstra is doing last year :).
If the mavs win this series the Nuggets is done with Porter. These lively, Gad and PJ are doing their role and winning.
Media giving excuses to Ant that he is gassed....
Meanwhile Luka is CLEARLY hobbling BUT still doing what a SUPERSTAR is supposed to do!
Luka is more MJ or Kobe than Antman is ..Facts
Great observation on Gobert defending the drive too much, he did it different/better with 46 seconds left staying closer and funneling doncic towards help. But the real story is these dumb turnovers and mental lapses by Edwards (2 terrible passes/decisions in crunch time) and surprisingly conley (who seems to be in the wrong location so often on defence). And please, Minnesota, will you consider a 2-3 zone defence with mcdaniels and Edwards on top?
GREAT vid...THANKS!
17:09 Rudy really wanted this stop. Waving his had frantically on the close out.
lol i saw that goofiness
Do they not enforce the free throw line violation anymore? Ive seen Edwards consistently step over the line before the ball makes contact with the rim when hes shooting free throws, and they are never called for a line violation
There was ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR RUDY TO SWITCH ONTO LUKA FOR THAT FINAL SHOT.. YOU FIGHT THROUGH THE PICK AND MAKE THEM TAKE A TOUGH CONTESTED 2..
Sometimes I feel like Rudy does not use his brain while on the court. He is a great rim protector, but not a perimeter defender. Shit like this is why he gets so much hate.
@@jahimuddin2306 nah thats not a Rudy mistake, it was Jaden's since he was the one who switched. He should have blitzed too.

Somebody hates Dallas 🤔
9:30 we actually did get a funk on that play
Gobert will forever be the reason why the wolves are losing because most casuals fans dont like him, for covid related stuff, or because he's french, or because of his name, or because Draymond/Shaq doesnt like his DPOY resume so ppl might as well hate on him for that reason.
BUT this is not quite how reality works. Gobert is doing his partition, drawing fouls, hitting his FTs, offensive rebounds, I mean the wolves dont really have a defense issue, its more about their offense. KAT is non existant, he has 0 impact offensively nor defensively, Ant is learning while making all these crunch time mistakes, 2 games in a row the wolves having careless turnovers.
i HATE so much to see the same narrative take place like in the Utah days, the Jazz wins because of everyone else, the Jazz loses because of Gobert, lol
Also this is more of a strategic error in the crunch from the wolves, they should have deny Luka at all cost and force him to drive in a contested position and have someone else take the shot.
rudy is actually an all time great defender...will be scapegoat like harris for philly again!

That what GSW did in 2022 Finals where their always targeted Al Horford in switch mismatch against Curry
