I visited Portugal back in 2019 and I fell in love with the place. The people, the food, the architecture, the coast.. everything was wonderful. Great infrastructure and easy access from north to south. We spent time in Lisbon and in Faro. Wonderful experience.
I’m a Spanish native, but I prefer living in Portugal. The people are kind and generous, and go out of their way to make you feel at ease in their lovely country. They also speak more foreign languages than Spaniards. All in all, though, the Iberian peninsula is in my opinion the best place to live in Europe.
You forgot one detail: From any part in Portugal, Spain is just a short distance away. So you can still live in Portugal, and go there to spend some time or buy some "recuerdos". Even Madrid is not so distant from Lisbon or Porto, and if you want to spend the weekend there is quite easy to go. Expect by train, because international rail links are very bad.

my grandfather is from Alentejo, yesterday i arrived from Alentejo, and i think you probably already know, people there are really respectfull and love to make conversations with everyone!
Portuguese children learn English (UK) from a small age and start to learn a second foreign language in 7th grade like French or Spanish. I lived for a few years in Spain and my biggest mistake was not to learn the language before I get there. The interactions at the bank, health care and even stores were really challenging.
I love when foreigners come to Portugal and speak English with us, because as someone who studied in an English speaking school and has a lot of English friend groups I like being able to speak English in my city. Lisbonite here : )
You are an exception, l lived in Portugal from 1988 until 2 years ago, now l live in Spain, l was racially abused and robbed by Portuguese, either by my company's staff or by various companies that we worked with.
I'm Spanish and even I consider the idea of moving to Portugal!! Seriously, thanks for making this video, because I always wondered how you thought of Portugal versus Spain, and I like the comparisons you've made. I've now been back to Spain for 3 years after living in Asia for 15 years, and while quality of life here is undoubtedly good, but really, taxation and all the political instability and b*llshit makes me desire to pack my bags and move away again. Thanks for your always awesome videos and hope to get to meet you one day in person in Portugal!!!
Portuguese here my hermano. I was actually happy to see this perspective putting our countries so much more close to each other than many people, on both countries, try so hard to differentiate. Portuguese and Spanish, we will always have our rivalries (which basically today translates To Jokes about each other) but in the end of the day we always walk together. And we do have the saying “nuestros hermanos”. We help each other more than we fight. And the Iberian relaxed way of living will always be the envy of other countries. And we have the best holiday destinations in Europe. And the best weather. And we have chorizo
Taxation, stupid socialist politics and corruption sometimes makes me want to pack my bag and move away from Portugal too. I love my country, I really do. But socialism is not allowing this country to stand up to its potential. The worst part is the hopelessness you get from seeing people always vote for the same people. For the past 47 years the political dispute has always been between the socialists (PS) and the social democrats (PSD) alongside with CDS (which are more coservative social democrats) , followed by the communists (PCP) and, in recent years, the progressists from BE. It really isn't that exciting to live in a country where this is our political scenario. Luckily, we are now starting to see some right wing parties gain some attention. We seem to finally have broken through the social democrat bubble and we are starting to see parties that defend economic liberalism which gives me hope. Maybe one day...
You are right spain is probably in terms of size /population and quality of live the best in the world...or top 10 without any doubt....the problem is the shit of politicians we have here...it is like a circus...but dangerous...in terms of future...
So agree I'm seriously too thinking about moving from Catalunya to Portugal. My partner is paying so much IRPF and i have real estate in the UK and I'm sure soon I'll have to pay something in spain as they need more money.
Believe me, I’m Portuguese and when I go to Spain , nobody try’s to speak Portuguese if I have some kind of needs, but in the other side, when I find a Spanish tourist in Portugal needing helped, I immediately enter in the “ Portunhol” mode 😃😂
@@SantiagoS-mz4zz it mostly relates to fact that the sounds in Portuguese make it easier to speak other languages. While Spanish has few sounds.. Making it difficult to learn even english! Cheers e um queijo!
I don't know where you got the info that portuguese people watch movies in Spanish. Most of us watch them in English with portuguese subs. That could also explain why most people here speak english as opposed to spain, as most if not all of our english content isn't dubbed.

It's so close! :) We traveled to Portugal a lot when we lived in Spain! BUT, there are so many fun things to do in Spain that it's hard to travel over to Portugal if you're on a tight schedule . . . next time!!! :)
When I visited Lisbon in 2007, someone had written on a wall ”tourists who like to shout, go to Spain”. This sums it up quite nicely what comes to cultural differences between the two. Spanish people can get really loud where as Portuguese are more calm and in that sense remind me of my fellow Finns. Excellent video! Visited around 50 countries and lived in 8 and sometimes people ask me my favorite country, the answer is still Portugal (even though I have never lived there). I have visited most of the notable cities in Portugal and all the areas. For the following reasons I rate Portugal so high: (1) People - friendly, honest, modest and calm (2) Infrastructure - It was a joy to do roadtrips in Portugal (3) Scenery - a lot to to see in such a small country (4) Safety (5) Weather (6) Prices (7) Children are valued highly in Portugal so it is to my understanding kids are welcome everywhere and there are lot of playgrounds for them
Cool to know. I have been traveling to different countries to search out other places to see what else was all out there. Before covid, I was actually in England 🏴 then left to Belgium 🇧🇪 then afterwards, I went to France 🇫🇷 for a few weeks before returning back to America. I’m actually getting ready to leave again in ‘2021 to Ireland 🇮🇪 and then staying a few weeks in Italy 🇮🇹. So again, I’m just traveling and checking out different places at the moment; but this was good information to know. I am definitely looking forward to moving out of the U.S. for good. Thanks guys! 🙏
Love you two! Another great video, thanks! I decided on Portugal before I discovered your channel, and now that I have, it’s making my journey so much more meaningful.
Funny thing, everyone loves living in Portugal, how great it is and all that...the truth is, if you're a foreigner, you come to Portugal and you have earnings from outside, yeah it's a great country to live. But being born in Portugal, growing up in Portugal, getting into the workforce, you suddenly have a huge desire to leave this place. Why? Well here we don't live, we try to survive, wages are insanely low, expenses are high, energy is one of the most expensive in the country, corruption from local and main government are huge, let's not talk about housing and rent for obvious reasons, no prospects of making a career and if you are a freelancer oh boy that is where the "fun" begins. So yeah no wonder most portuguese leave the country with or without univ degrees

Thank you for allowing people like me to live vicariously through you :) Looking forward to more/continued Portugal related vids!
Thank you for this video. Grew up in Spain, then we moved back to the UK when I was 12, now 25 and looking to move back but Spain doesn't seem to be the same anymore. Portugal has been looking more appealing and this confirms it!
Love the video! Thanks for sharing! I moved from NYC to Portugal and there's SO much to discover and love here! I've visited Spain, and unfortunately had some very negative race-related incidents occur to me (on multiple ocassions) while visiting. I was traveling solo and staying in the 'best parts' of town which made the whole thing even scarier. As a BIPOC person residing in Portugal I've felt nothing but safe and welcome here!
Fantastic Video! I'm a burned-out American Nurse, and my Beloved and I plan on retiring to Spain or Portugal when travel restrictions lift. You have given the confirmation we needed that Portugal would be a much better choice for us! You have a new subscriber!
If you live on your own funds from your mother country, be it a pension, savings, rent ... both are interesting. You do may get more bang for the buck in PT. If you intend to also work in, either forget it!
Thanks for this video! I left Canada for France but am now deciding between Portugal and Spain. Funny enough, the prevalence of English turns me off from a country, so the idea of moving to Spain became a bit more appealing from this video! I love to be fully immersed in the language and hate when locals switch to English on me!
One thing you should consider is how easily you can integrate into Spain regardless of the language. Unless you want to be part of the ex-pat community you will find it very difficult to integrate with the locals. It's not easy to be accepted and even if you are white from Northern Europe. As a person of color, I would say take vlogger comments with a pinch of salt when it comes to the light criticism they had on Spain. They chose Portugal for good reasons.
Rural??? Damn... You're brave. If you have any questions let me know hermana. I loved my rural living but.... Well I like the excitement and movement of the city. Okay... And the parties xD
Thanks for sharing! My husband and I are both from Puerto Rico, so Spanish is our main language. However, looking at the taxes and visa process...maybe it is time to start learning Portugal Portuguese 😉
Take into consideration that being a native Spanish speaker will be really easy to learn Portuguese and more than that a lot of people understand Spanish as well. Maybe there will be one or another word that is really different but you will be able to work around it. So, feel free to move and you don’t need to learn Portuguese before you move to manage yourself there, you can easily learn it there. In the other hand if you just know Portuguese and go to Spain nobody will understand you maybe only in Galicia.

I will consider your course but wonder if you can answer one question for me, which I am still not clear on. I will likely be moving to Portugal in August. According to the Embassy, I have to make a reservation for an accommodation for one full year in order for my D7 Visa to be processed. I can certainly book a long-term rental for a year, but in all likelihood will only be in the unit long enough to find something else i.e., 2-3 months. Are you aware of any obligation to pay for the remainder of the year if I only stay for a few months? Thanks in advance for your assistance. Henry
These guys are the most financially literate couple I’ve come across. It’s insane. The executed wealth so brilliantly. The multiple streams of both passive and non-passive income is SO impressive. I’m currently working on my own 10 streams of passive income and 3 side hustles. Keep up the good work!!!
The comparison between the two Iberican countries is well appreciated. As a North-American fan of both cultures, this is definitely welcomed food for thoughts. Obrigado, Amon e Christina, por compartilhar a sua perspetiva.
Great video ! As someone who has lived in both as well, in terms of diversity, if you are from a different ethnicity group than white, I would say Portugal is a better pick, probably due to its history of colonies and immigration, it feels normal to see black, brown, Indian, Asian people in different walks of society. I have lived 10 months in Barcelona and sometimes it felt like for a big portion of the population, people of African descent, carribean or other are only people who just landed crossing the Mediterranean on a speedboat... Really felt being followed by security in some shops or supermarkets at time even though I am what people could call an "expat"... I'm not saying Spain is racist, far from that, just that it felt like some people need a lot of education on human perception, there are many African people who settle in their life legally and who actually have good job and money... It has never felt awkward in 1 year in Lisbon, but both countries are awesome !
Portugal it is not better, maybe you have that idea cause you lived in Lisbon, outside Lisbon it is totally diferent, dont take major cities as example...
@Andrew Groom hello Andrew, I'm a UK citizen considering moving to Puerto Vallarta but am looking at Portugal too. My question if I may is would you choose Portugal over Mexico? I'm asking because you probably have more knowledge of Mexico. Thanks 🙏🏻

Maybe buy you a thank-you coffee when I'm there ;) Keep the great videos coming! (Interested to see videos with footage of different neighbourhoods for a first move)
I’ve been looking into both countries quite a bit. My impression is Portugal wants you to come as long as you qualify and tries to simplify the process while Spain has the NLV but tries to make the process as complicated as possible. The document timeline with Spain is really frustrating and each Spanish consulate has different requirements.
Yes, our application is still with Spain consulate trying to request unnecessary documents ever since March. I went ahead and apply for Portugal residency and approved within 27days. Our flight is December 13th, super excited.
Interesting video that has made me think about this nice couple's choice. I guess that taxes must have been a big reason, when you are retiring at 39 is a powerful one. Everything you can do in Portugal, you can do in Spain, but the other way round it's not true. Spain has many winter sport resorts, some of them first class, close to wonderful Mediterranean beaches. That's another difference, the warm almost subtropical Mediterranean Spanish costas with their very own way of life, Portugal's rocky coast and rough Atlantic waters are beautiful but they often require a cautious approach. Spanish way of life is more energetic and accelerated, the Portuguese way is more relaxed and melancolic. Both are great countries to live in.
Few years ago, visiting Portugal, we went to have dinner in a restaurant and at the end the owner (British, I think) started to talk to us and asked if we are Spanish. He told us that he had lived in Spain for five years and then decided to move to Portugal. He said that it was a bad decission and he missed Spain and the people. We asked why and his answer was that in Portugal people is too pasive, a bit sad and lack of initiative but in Spain there is great energy, "joie de vivre" and people like to enjoy life.
Thanks for sharing! I always learn something from each of your videos . My wife’s family is from Madeira and we feel in love with the island and would love to live there.

Hi Sammy I hope you are enjoying Portugal. I live in the UK and am considering moving to Portugal. I also am considering Australia. Other than the distance and cost of living being expensive in Australia could you please give me some feedback on the two countries? Much appreciated 🙏🏻
Nice! Well done! One thing you might include on your area analysis is "commuting", i.e. car ownership, driver's Licensing, buses, trains, car rentals or simply bike ridings.
Portuguese can be a hard language to learn for foreigners due to our phonetics and the way we pronounce vowels. It's actually quite a diverse language phonetically and that is what enables those of us who are native speakers to speak foreign languages with ease. Yes we may have a slight accent in some languages but it doesn't make it hard to learn or understand languages. What helps us in terms of language is that except for young children's content nothing is dubbed. Everything has subtitles when not in Portuguese but apart from very select things it will be hard to find Portuguese dubbing.
Most of your reasons are based on language. I am an American citizen whose maternal language is Spanish, so I guess, based on your analysis, I should go to Spain. INTERESTING. Thanks. Another reason to pick Spain, specially if you live on the border with France, is that you can make weekend train trips to France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
Great information! We never considered Portugal as an option, but it's sounding pretty good. I'm surprised that you feel safer there than even Japan. 😃

I also, like the scenery being from Portugal myself and now living in Massachusetts, I especially appreciate the sights. Thank you and God bless you.

I know both contries very well and i honestly think both countries are amazing with incredible quality of life. I prefer Spain but i can undertand you have choosen Portugal which is for sure a fantastic country. Good bless Spain and Portugal!
I am spanish and in general terms I agree and support your opinions and choice. Maybe mediterranean sea is more friendly than atlantic ocean ... Otherwise tax administration is hell in Spain, is not only about quantities you must pay, is about incredibly complex bureaucracy, cash movements controls, insecure law interpretations, etc etc
5 of the best 10 expat cities in the world are Iberian! Lisbon #3! Spain is super diverse so it depends which region you use for your benchmark, i.e Valencia comes as the best expat region in the world with #1 and #2 for expats to live, very safe, cheap, etc.. but you couldn't say the same of Madrid/Barcelona. If Spain had Portuguese administrative efficiency, it would be a no brainer! i think weather is better in Spain too!
I prefer spain, I also put a lot of self studies into learning the language. I practiced at home reading and listening. Then when I came to spain I was surprised people understood me. I want to keep things simple, so I won't move the Portugal. I have always liked spanish things more. I do dislike all the English speakers communities, as they refuse to talk the language and they prevent you from learning. Anyway it was Great video .
I totally agree with you. I think that not trying to speak the language of the country which receives you is a total lack of respect and education. I am not a superman and I speak 5 languages, just because I am not expecting others to speak my language (French) when I go to another country. I live in Spain and I love it. I have lived in Portugal and I felt more like in "UK under the Sun" than in proper Portugal due to too much English speakers....

Portuguese children learn English (UK) from a small age and start to learn a second foreign language in 7th grade like French or Spanish.
I lived for a few years in Spain and my biggest mistake was not to learn the language before I get there. The interactions at the bank, health care and even stores were really challenging.
En España también, pero se incide en la ortografía y gramática, no en la conversación.
My partner is paying so much IRPF and i have real estate in the UK and I'm sure soon I'll have to pay something in spain as they need more money.
the heck? these guys are your neigbours XD

I just have to say Americans have no problem being expats, "foreigners" but hate and belittle immigrants. Even though as immigrants we pay double the tuition, higher taxes etc. It's so sad.. everyone is just trying to live a decent life. I'm not targeting you guys but it is the general behavior.

They're both immigrants and both are looking for a better life.
ANOTHER AMAZING VIDEO! Don't know if you guys remember but It's David, the one who graduated a year ago and now living rent free in Europe! I have done alot of travelling and Spain was my favorite area however once I travelled to Lisbon, I fell in love with it instantly. After the winter and covid dies down I plan to travel to Lisbon again and eventually will live there. Glad you guys are enjoying it!
Have you considered making a video discussing the major American and Portuguese taxes that you pay? There doesn’t seem to be many videos explaining how taxation on expats works, both generally and for Portugal specifically

Awesome!!! Thank you so much for this video! Definitely would love to visit Portugal once COVID is over!
It’s the new normal courtesy of the NWO psychopaths it will not be over because to many trusted in the deceptions and lies. In the US we still were told to take our shoes off at the airport security gate in 2020 19 years ( Covid19 )after 9/11 welcome to Covid1984 global agenda. Strap in tight.
What a very professional presentation!!!! Wow!!!!!
I had been considering Spain but this has made me reconsider. Thanks so much!
Wow! Awesome, informative, interesting video. I'm still kicking myself for letting my friend talk me out of visiting Portugal while we were in Spain.
You are so sweet Laura! so exciting to hear you decided on Portugal! :)

You are such a lovely couple. Your affection for each other comes through on the video. You are truly blessed.
I'm Spanish and i'll be moving to rural Portugal soon!
Rural???
Piece of advice. Don’t speak Spanish to Portuguese.
We don’t like it.
Better stick to English and learn Portuguese at your pace… 😉

I will consider your course but wonder if you can answer one question for me, which I am still not clear on. I will likely be moving to Portugal in August. According to the Embassy, I have to make a reservation for an accommodation for one full year in order for my D7 Visa to be processed. I can certainly book a long-term rental for a year, but in all likelihood will only be in the unit long enough to find something else i.e., 2-3 months. Are you aware of any obligation to pay for the remainder of the year if I only stay for a few months? Thanks in advance for your assistance. Henry

I’ve been looking into both countries quite a bit.

Nice!

Thanks for another timely video as this was helpful for me. Spain and Portugal are my top choices.
