Great explanation of embouchure - it's such a strange, difficult (yet vital!) thing to teach and you've done a far better job than I have! Nice to see another player on UA-cam too - BTW, is that an Olwell headjoint? All the best (and thanks for the link!)
Hi Sarah, thanks for posting these wonderful videos. At 40 years of age I was a late starter on the flute. What helped me with emboucher I found if I rolled up the sleeve of my shirt on left arm ( I'm right handed) I could feel any wasted air that was escaping. This helped me to fill the flute

great job .. thanks! I'm a whistle player .. that aquired a rosewood flute a long time ago .. had a try at the embouchure .. could'nt get the hang of it. I think after watching your very detailed 'how to' .. I will try again. Cheers and thanks for putting this together.

Tuning in from Canada, new to irish flute but luckily some experience with classical flute. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on embouchure! Learning about woodwinds and music has been getting me through this pandemic :)
an alto "Serpent" flute in G or A and a tenor "Serpent" flute in D the tenor is a fourth or fifth lower than the alto; both will have extensions to Low G (written G3). the alto size will be comparable to the boehm alto flute. the tenor size will be comparable to the boehm bass (tenor) flute, instead of a flute d’Amore because a flute d’Amore is higher than an alto; therefore the d’Amore is not a true tenor flute. They’ll be innovative as long as they can have comfortable fingering span. They will be held upright and vertically. That’ll be an interesting idea!!!! They’ll look like serpents but with swan neck and flute type embouchure!!!

tnks 4 sharing! u talk about covering the tone hole with the bottom lip. ther was a nice pic' of ur aperature.. but as a beginner, it would help to actually "SEE" ur lip cover the tone hole as u blow a note. one picture is worth 1000 words :)
having too tight an embouchure may be an issue for me lol, notes sound like a mix of 1st and second octave but when i relax a bit, it sounds clearer,

I think one has to be totally dedicated to the Irish stuff. That includes staying with the one style and instrument.

I don't understand what you want to say with your comment, Pat. Are you annoyed that I don't seem dedicated enough to Irish music or that I haven't played long enough, or that I play the silver flute? I am watching this tutorial video because I want to learn how to play Irish music. If I had played Irish music for 10 years I wouldn't watch the video. I can't afford to buy an Irish flute, but I have a silver one that can handle the music fairly well, so that's what I use.
Listen to Joanie Madden of Cherish the Ladies, she plays a Miyazawa and is amazing.
Maybe you could do a video sometime on "frame" or holding the flute.
I found after seven years of constant playing when I adjusted my right (lower) hand position and shoulder I upped my playing ability on that side.

Sarah, really thanks a lot for your wonderful videos! Could you give us a tip about how to change the embouchure/air jet to correctly reach the last part of the second register (high G and up)? How much should we push the headjoint against the chin/lips?
Should we direct the air jet to the bottom edge of or top edge of the headjoint hole?
Do you have any tip to end up-always in the same embouchure position (lips with respect to headjoint hole)?

I am trying the Irish ☘️ Flute. I just received it. It’s wooden with no keys. I’m finally getting a noise. Fingering is hard. It’s a D. I’m trying pipers grip. I have a low D Irish Whistle

How can I feel the vibration when someone is playing the flute
When you're blowing what's the best breath sound to go for? A "P" ( Pooo ) sound or a "T" ( Tuuuu ) one? Does it matter or does it depend on the type of flute?
Hi Jim! So you have a few options, for traditional flute some people actually make a Ha sound which stops the air at the throat level. Others stick to more of a D sound. Classical flute uses more percussive, staccato T or K sounds but that’s used more sparsely in Irish flute :)

Thank you Sarah. Really appreciate all your tunes and tips, especially on embouchure. I have been struggling for over a year to improve my tone and some days I am pretty good and lay the flute (Black Wood) down for a minute and then struggle to find any kind of note. I have a question for you. When lining the flute up is it best to keep embouchure hole perfectly in line with everything else?
Hi Gearoid! Thanks for your comment :) Yes at first I would say it's good to line up your embouchure directly over the hole in the head joint. There's then the question of how much of your bottom lip should actually go over the hole, most people say the hole should be covered about 33% but James Galway in this video says he covers about 66%, so seemingly that point varies :) ua-cam.com/video/NcXRzZZv1mE/v-deo.html

I unthumbed my thumbs down. I didn’t want to pass up what you had to say. I was handed an Irish flute in March and after six months I finally got a decent sound. Next step is channeling air through the embouchure. Like one of your other fans, I’m a former trumpet player, so I can crank up a lot of air. But after six beats it gets lost somewhere. Don’t have that problem with the whistle. At 73, I need all the information I can get. Next stop, your breathing vid.
I posted this on another flute video recently, and the same information may be helpful here, so I'm just gonna be lazy and copy/paste it to save time, hah. 2:58 To my understanding, that's actually a misconception. The wind stream doesn't actually perform a clean split over that edge. It goes in and out of the embouchure hole very quickly. "The jet of air from the player's lips travels across the embouchure-hole opening and strikes against the sharp further edge of the hole. If such a jet is disturbed, then a wave-like displacement travels along it and deflects it so that it may blow either into or out of the embouchure hole. The speed of this displacement wave on the jet is just about half the air-speed of the jet itself (which is typically in the range 20 to 60 metres per second, depending on the air pressure in the player's mouth). The origin of the disturbance of the jet is the sound vibration in the flute tube, which causes air to flow into and out of the embouchure hole."
