I built a bike and used a few of your videos to get me out of some very frustrating situations. Thank you for the information and taking the time to make these videos to share your knowledge.
Thanks alot. My brake lever stroke and reach did not come set up right from the factory, levers were close to bottoming out. Now I know how to adjust them.
Thx. Just got ultegra hyd disc on my bike and I want the levers to engage closer to the bars. Having your hands wide open while braking/descending sucks! People always set up rim brake sti wrong as well, dual pivot calipers were meant for more travel.
I like your video very much. Can I ask a question? I have R9170 brake lever issue. when I push the brake lever, the lever can not go back Smoothly, so I loosen the clamp band screw ,let brake lever go back faster, but it still has some resistance inside, I have no idea to fix it.
Love the videos. My issue is the opposite. Both screws set to push lever as far out as possible and set the minimum free stroke. But, the lever is still has to be almost fully pulled in before the brakes purchase. Any advice?
how do you get the minimum free stroke / how do you get the brake to engage the earliest? Or do you have to pull back the lever fairly far in general with R8020 levers, if bled perfectly?
If you adjust off the b8ke easier too..pity they put it there tbh. Some say the freestroke takes pressure of the lines ever so slighty to reduce drag with new pads. Not sure it does i cant tell any difference. I just adjust the reach now and leave the freestroke.
when you adjust the reach going near to bar, is it normal that there is a play on top of the lever, the chrome part (when you hold on tops of the hood), when you are pulling the hoods when climbing...
Hi I have watched your videos on how to bleed my shimano ultegra brakes(first time disc brake owner.) Following your vid I have bled the rear brake without any issues. However the front brake is not playing ball. I am unable to push any fresh mineral oil from the caliper to the lever and likewise I can't get fluid from the bleed cup down to the caliper. A friend has said it could be down to the free stroke setting at the lever. Should the free stroke be all the way in or out when bleeding the system?
The Dura-Ace 9170 Free Stroke and Reach adjustments are piss poor in my opinion. I've played with these adjustments for hours and the lever wants to damn near hit the bar before the pads engage the rotor. There is plenty of power to stop once engaged but I just don't like the lever being that close to the bar when the engagement happens. I could move the lever up higher on the bar but then have no room for my hands on the tops plus it would look stupid. I'm glad Shimano included these adjustments but they really do me no good.
Take the wheels out and squeeze the levers right in a couple of times and reinstall the wheels and try it. This will let more fluid into the pistons so they won't retract as far and your brakes should be tighter.
Great material. Explained as it should be.
I come back to this video every time I need to mess with this. Thanks!

You are a top boy. All the info I've always needed! Please keep it up!

Thank you so much for this video. I could not find any info on free stroke adjustment! Thanks again
Glad you found the video helpful!
As usual excellent technical explanation and presentation ; )
Thanks!
Really useful information again, cheers👍
Thanks, your videos are always helpful
Consistently best videos!
Very helpful, thank you!
Great video I’ve been wanting to add a bit more play as lbs removed the play
I love your videos you are awesome!!!
Thank you
Useful 🙏 thx

ikr! came to the vid cus of this problem
Is there a way to adjust the main(bigger) levers position from left to right? As apposite to Fore and aft. My main lever has 10mm play outwards

Brakes need bleeding properly! Providing the pads are in good condition and the lever bladder isn’t leaking.
What bike is the teal/light blue one you were working on?
As usual great informative video. Quick question, can you adjust Ultegra R8000 brake lever? I can't seem to bolt to adjust the reach.
The reach can be adjusted on the R8000 lever 2mm hex under the top of the hood.
Free To Cycle thanks, I saw it now
I'm not clear how many stage is this adjustment. 1 or 2?

Bleed with the free-stroke adjuster centered. You''ll have a wider range to adjustment, including reducing travel.
Is just me or R8000 are different type of hoods?

Would this be the same adjustment for the grx 600 brake levers.?
Only the GRX810 have built-in free stroke adjustment
Am I right, you spin the back wheel but adjust and demonstrate the front brake lever (the left one)?
In Britain the front brake lever is on the right, the rear brake lever is on the left.
is it normal that the hoods (rubber part) won't be as tight as the first time?
Yes they never seem quite the same after being removed!
Does adjusting the Reach and/or Free Stroke affect pad clearance?
Has no effect on the pads!!
After reach adjustment, i have to adjust the cable tension or not ?
No doesn’t effect the cable tension.
