If you find yourself with extra time somehow, you should run through First Departure R as well. It's a very similar game, just not quite as pretty and a little less instruction. Likely because those details were in an instruction booklet for it's original release, but it sounds like, from your review, that it would be exactly your speed.
If you want to fill out that database be sure to check out the post-game dungeon the game offers. One of my favorite memories of this game was when I finally completed it as a kid! Had a big grin across my face the rest of the day.
I also strarted with Till the end of Time and always wanted to play this... Just tried the demo and it feels as if I play Star Ocean for the first time again. I love it so far :) Great review thank you!
I was never enamored with this game back in the day. It felt kinda low budget, but with this I don’t get that impression at all. Strange that Gemdrops is able to develop something so widely more desirable than Tri-Ace, who hasn’t taken any steps forward the past 20 years.
I played a little of the original and for some reason I didn’t finish it however I will be picking this one up! Thanks for the review, it sounds like a real treat!!! ❤
Nice! I´ve played the SNES fan translation, Star Ocean First Departure R and the demo of Star Ocean: The Second Story R. Pre ordered the full game. This is a very informative review. I´m glad this game turned out great. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest would be great in this style, that probably ain´t going to happen.
Glad you have joined the ranks of classic Star Ocean fans. I hope it was a memorable journey. Great video as always and I look forward to the next one. I also look forward to your Twitch stream of Final Fantasy VII new threat this week and I hope your subscribers find their way over and check it out too!
bought it digital on the psn store and my physical copy will come next week (i couldnt wait and plus a digital copy for me is one of those things where perhaps i can make a cute girlfriend try it out and turn her into a gamer,) so far i'm loving it and honestly as someone who swing's both ways (no not like that either, i mean i have a ps5 and a series x, all though the way i said it defintly came out wrong lol) but this is kind of making me enjoy my ps5 more and i've had my ps5 a few months but still go back to my series x, so i'll be playing this for quite a while and i'm thinking of going for the platinum on it, also love how you can still break the game thru contraband in ways that makes it way way way to easy, i did it everytime i played the game on the ps1 back in the day
still waiting for steam to release , cannot wait to play as Rena and meet one of my favorite character which is OP(you know who if you play original and PSP ver , he is exclusive to Rena Playthrough) , love the remake even in demo , if suikoden 2 in this format will be great , combat is great , improve and easier than original , overall love this remake star ocean 2nd story R > FF7 Remake sorry FF fans
I think a I would prefer a pixel remaster of Chrono Trigger as opposed to this since its originally in 2d, but xenogears and FF9 I couldnt agree more. I also am a total sucker for FF8. That had its own HD remaster but I would play that in this style as well.
its crazy how all remake games are so expensive for video games. at this rate, gamers might as well stop playing video games and go outside, grind, go bang some pretty girls and buy luxury cars.
@GenesisVII lol yea. Thought I was on easy. Have to check. Demo about to end now. Can you change buttons? The special moves to back bumpers and change the dodge to not be push toward?
I really like it, but sadly I don't like the choice of those pixelated characters. It would have been nice if they would have people given the choice of pixelated old-school graphics or a more modern smooth version (a bit like the characters in Trails In The Sky). This game is great, but for some reason that pixelated art feels very cheap. And that feeling is not because I am new to gaming. Far from it. My first game was Tic-Tac-Toe on the Cosmac Super elf (somewhere in 1979), so I have years and years of gaming "under my belt". But in this aspect that R stands for "regression" in my humble opinion. Still - I am glad this game gets a second chance to shine...
I don't like that the characters and environment are two different animation styles, so as much as this game seems interesting the visuals alone in a No for me.
@@GenesisVII Playing the original after The Second Story is great too. Makes you connected with Ronyx J. Kenny before starting First Departure. The order doesn´t matter much, their a bit connected you´ll recognize the mutual assets.
After recording this I rolled credits and now playing New Game Plus!
Any questions, let me know! Are you excited!?

They did Star Ocean right! I will say this - I loved Star Ocean 6, it was a gem. But Star Ocean 2 - and now 2R - is the crowning jewel!
I loved this game back in the day, and I'm really looking forward to the PS5 version! Thanks for the review, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
It's really good! Having a blast with it!

Not long played Mystic Quest, would be beautiful if that got some love like this did!

Prob this one is the highest meta score for starocean series rn
Well deserved!
Great review! Thank you 💚

Haha I knew what you meant! I got the platinum today, very rewarding not too difficult. Took me a around 62 hours
@@GenesisVII so your the 0.01% then
Thank you for the review! I will definitely check the game out
Any time!
Great video man I’m excited for this one.
Did you get the play for this one? If so how was that? Haha
I’m loving it, I’m close to getting the Platinum, give or take about 10 more hours. It’s a pretty easy one!

Doing my Rena playthrough now, I know who you mean ☺️
As a heads up, this game has over 100 ending variations.
The game has a menu for it in this version. There's 99 in total!
They need to remake Chrono Trigger, Xenogear, and Final Fantasy IX in this style for modern consoles.
I think a I would prefer a pixel remaster of Chrono Trigger as opposed to this since its originally in 2d, but xenogears and FF9 I couldnt agree more. I also am a total sucker for FF8. That had its own HD remaster but I would play that in this style as well.

If you are there were you are I think you will be in for a surprise for the close ending...
Final Fantasy 6,7,9 and Xenogears in this style
newbie question. how is replay
Really good, you can grab different characters and take your stats and everything into a new game
Demo I died very quick in cave.. seemed just manic.. maybe change buttons. If can stop the inverted dodge ?
You can always lower the difficulty, it might help a little, I also found taking your time in battle instead of mashing helps also!
@GenesisVII lol yea. Thought I was on easy. Have to check. Demo about to end now. Can you change buttons? The special moves to back bumpers and change the dodge to not be push toward?
Yeah you should be able to change it all in the control settings.
System > Settings > Wireless Controller Settings > Controls
@@ZeNex74 On PS4/PS5 dodge is "X". What are you playing it on?
does the Ps5 graphics look alot better than the Switch ??
Thinks might look a lot sharper maybe? I know it runs at 60fps though and switch runs at 30fps
play the PSP version first then play this remake, that how the game became most wanted. Or try original ps1 version.
I dunno if I can go back and play the older versions now. I'm on my 2nd playthrough and loving it!
I hope you’re companions are better in the full release, they were useless in the demo
Oh they are, don’t worry! Lots to choose from as well!
the R is for Remake, this is a full remake and not a remaster

That’s a shame, would you rather like a pixel remaster style instead of a meshing of the two?
Why would you not play the original first? If you're gonna review this, you really should.
Do I really need to?
@@GenesisVII yes. You'll get a lot out of it, I think
