- Rachel Turnbull, English Heritage’s senior collections conservator for fine art, and curator of collections, Peter Moore explain how a group portrait by Jacob Huysmans (1633 - 1696) has been painstakingly restored after being acquired to go back on display at Wrest Park in Bedfordshire for the first time in 100 years. The painting depicts Jemima, Airmine and Elisabeth, daughters of Thomas Crewe, 2nd Baron Crewe of Stene Park and was first taken by Jemima to Wrest Park, where it stayed for almost 200 years before it was sold in 1917.

I hope they show what the painting will look once it has been restored! 😻😻😻
Great to see the wonderful bright colours popping out from under the aged varnish.
For those curious:
'An X-ray revealed a cherub had been painted over, but after further investigation it appeared the cherub's face was unfinished.
'She said this suggests "the artist either changed his mind, or Thomas Crew didn't like the first composition".'
That BBC News article ('Sisters' portrait returns to Wrest Park stately home') also contains a before and after restoration image.
As a Fine Art restorer, thank you for this video! It's always nice to hear about it. :)
I'm specialised in ceramic, but my best friend is specialised in painting, so this video will definitely be of interest for her!
Amazing work! Thank you for restoring these masterpieces
Before & after photos as well as time lapse of restoration!!! I could very easily watch a 30 minute - hour video of that. Very frustrating that you only get to see a little of the picture being cleaned and no end result.

Would love to know if the cherub was restored also to the painting....please do a follow up. Thank you !
Thanks for your comment! The whole of this beautiful painting will be restored, and it will return to Wrest Park in Bedfordshire in the New Year where it will be on display for all of our visitors to enjoy. Find out more about Wrest Park here: goo.gl/n1woc1
Thank you for the link. I am exploring it now. I love history and I love art. I am so happy you provided this source of information for me. I can't thank you enough ! My ancestors came to America in the 1600's from Engand. So I am always looking for restored homes and antiquities in England.
Thank you.
Any updates on the Painting I would love to see what it looks like once it has been compleatly restored.
Wow. Amazing. So much work! Wonder how long it took the actual painter to complete? Thankyou!☺🎨
cool video, I wish it was like super long hahaha
I wonder if the disguised cherub is secretly referencing a miscarried child?
So someone had to give this painting up to the state because they couldn't afford the tax because the owner decided to die? How really sad.
