I’m a little surprised that there was no mention of Erasmus Darwin. He was the grandfather of Charles Darwin. Erasmus Darwin wrote a book entitled Zoonomia which pre-shadowed Charles Darwin’s work Origin of Species. Erasmus Darwin's works were read and commented on by his grandson Charles Darwin. Charles Darwin’s critical and innovative insight was that he saw how transmutation happened. Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection articulated fuller theory of how a species’ inheritance actually changed over time. Genetic characteristics that made an animal more suited to their environment survive longer and had more young. Charles Darwin’s core insight was the actual mechanism how evolution occurred by a process he called 'Natural Selection'.

My children are in the middle of a unit on Darwin, so this is fortuitously timed.

This was interesting to me after having looked at an annotated facsimile of the original Origin of Species. Most people have not read this original work, since we've moved beyond it now, but it's interesting to see the places where he went a little wrong or was unable to explain some details, along with his revolutionary breakthroughs. He refers to many of his experiments and discoveries here in the text.

Is there an address where we can send the presenter a grown-up-boy shirt, and maybe even a pair of trousers?

Good grief, English Heritage, remove the vines away from the outside. 😱

Ivy doesn't pose as much danger to houses as people seem to think. Ivy takes advantage of cracks and crevices to suck moisture out of masonry but it's not strong enough to actually create holes or cracks. The only time ivy really creates a problem is when people allow it to grow up wooden structures unchecked. Without proper pruning ivy can get so extremely heavy. And without pruning the moisture builds up between the ivy and wall of a wooden structure and after a time, all can come crashing down. Ivy is so GORGEOUS to me. It's also an amazing insulator. Keeps houses very cool during the warm months. At my old house, the entire front and back yard we're nothing but ivy and flowers. I didn't have to trim any grass because none could grow up through the ivy!!! It was a beautiful thing.

Shame he was so wrong, and that it had such a damaging effect on ... well... almost everything.
