      Hi Charles, thank you for the comment! I have a few more DE1 videos I'm working on. My next in-depth style video is going to be about manual shots with the DE1 (Slayer + lever shots). Feel free to make any suggestions as well!
      Thanks,

    Awesome video, I hope to own a Decent machine one day. I'm betting this is the best machine for light roasts. Thanx

      Yeah you get complete control over every variable you need for dialing in light roasts. My particular method in this video works better for medium-light I think. I didn't really play much with flow rates as much but this approach will get you an acceptable shot!

      Hey Taylor,
      I've gotten a few requests from people on the Diaspora so I think I'll actually be making a video about Blooming. I have a fairly straight forward approach to it that you'll see!

      @@BrianQuan awesome!! I know a huge factor with blooming shots is, where does this flow rate put your peak pressure? Where does your pressure end up by the end of the shot? I don't know many more variables to pay attention to though. Definitely very interested in that one. I love blooming coffee shots.

    Excellent video. Can you please tell clarify a few things for me?
    1. When you get a new bag of coffee, what's the process? Do you start at the same grind as you left off with on the last bag and make small adjustments?
    2. Let's say you drink an espresso every morning out of the same bag. Once it is dialed how much does it drift each day? Do you have to make/waste multiple shots every morning?
    3. Any tips on how you store your beans?
    I have a de1+ on queue and can't wait to get it! Thanks again for the great content.

    • @BrianQuan
      @BrianQuan  4 роки тому

      Hey there,
      1. I find most beans that I use are med/light roast type so I don't have to do crazy grind changes when swapping beans. Generally speaking if you're drinking the same type of roast the grind sizes won't have to drastically change (there are some edge cases with huge/small beans lol). You'll be able to tell if you need to make small changes based off of the data/taste but small grind changes (if you're in the ballpark anyway) won't drastically make things worse/better. What grinder are you going to be using?
      2. So that kinda depends on what grinder you use. On the Niche Zero I rarely if ever have to change grind settings within the day if I am using the same profile. Of course if I swap profiles I have to change my grind. Another thing to add is that some profiles such as the Londinium V3 profile I showed include all of that conditional programming to compensate for bad prep/inconsistent grind. Once dialed in if you're using a good profile/don't mess up your puck prep you'll have consistent data/shots. I have a consistent rotation of beans I cycle through all the time so I have a good feel as to what they should taste like. I rarely waste any shots anymore. Once you use the machine enough you'll get a feel for how the data/profiles impact taste.
      3. I personally use the airscape and one of the generic storage containers. If you consume at a fast enough rate it won't really matter. I posted an equipment guide so make sure you get all of the supporting accessories! It would be a shame if your DE1 came and you couldn't prep properly.
      The DE1 will be a super fun machine! I haven't been very active on the diaspora but I'm more active on the espresso discord. If you have any more questions hop in and we/others can chat. Thanks for watching!

      @@BrianQuan thanks a bunch. I have a monolith flat max that shipped yesterday. I mostly have drank pour overs for the last 7-8 years.
      I mostly drink light/medium roasts as well.
      Will go check out accessories guide now.

    • @BrianQuan
      @BrianQuan  4 роки тому

      Oh perfect! Monolith Max will be great!!! I'm waiting on the OZIK before I go to the endgame. I briefly heard about some complaints when using it with the DE1 on the Kafatek forums but I haven't checked. Make sure you get all of the tools to ensure there isn't static/retention especially with the monoliths.
      Dialing in is going to be extremely easy on the monolith due to its consistency. It'll be very easy to diagnose what's going on in your shot. You'll be able to see visually and in the data if your prep is bad but I think the grinding quality may compensate for that.

    • @imprezivr61
      @imprezivr61 4 роки тому

      @@BrianQuan static is kind of an issue here regardless as it's so dry(AZ). I currently have an ek43s with ssp coffee burrs and a little rdt usually takes care of it for brewed coffee. I'm not sure how espresso will be.
      I believe that the monolith comes with a wdt tool and I purchased the v3 decent tamper so hopefully I have my bases covered.
      I read so much conflicting info on "distribution tools" like the Ocd so I'm not sure if it's worth buying one of those.
      I'm super overwhelmed by figuring out puck prep. Like you watch videos on it and it seems so easy visually, but then reading about it, and people's struggles, it seems so hard to get correct.
      Those ozik look amazing. Wouldn't mind getting one in the future myself if they work well 😁

    • @BrianQuan
      @BrianQuan  4 роки тому

      @@imprezivr61 luckily you'll be able to figure out puck prep fairly easily with the DE1. RDT + WDT (wdt will do your distribution) then tamp will be very sufficient. The "distributors" are actually levelers as they only flatten the top of a puck. There's someone on the diaspora/discord who posted a bunch of videos with a glass portafilter showing you what's going on inside.
      Once you get your machine I'd be happy to keep chatting in the diaspora or discord if you need help with anything! I'm thinking about putting together a video geared specifically to new DE1 users (probably just a more concise version of this vid) but I'll have to find time for it.

    Hi Brian, thank you for your contributions to the DE1 Community, your videos have been very helpful. I have recently purchased a DE1 and have had it for a month now and still feel as though I am trying to dial in. All of my espressos seem to be a bit on the sour side. I thought I'd keep it simple and use the default profile. When you shots are a bit sour ... how do you recommend adjusting? I started off coarse and have been going finer and finer but it's still a bit sour. When I look at the data it seems like I've been mimicking the profile pretty closely as you recommended so it's hard to know if I should keep going finer or go coarser, or raise the temperature or move on to other profiles.

      We're actually chatting at the moment about how to improve the app to do your 'dialing in' approach, by auto-loading a "god shot" reference. That way you'll see your current shot lining up to the reference shot. Much easier.

    • @BrianQuan
      @BrianQuan  4 роки тому

      Sent an email. I definitely think a preview of what the shot should look like rather than the visual of the steps would make it a lot easier for a beginner to understand how to dial in. That way it's: 1. Pick Profile (see what it's supposed to be doing visually in the graphs 2. Adjust grind size until they match that graph (God shot) 3. Adjust temp to taste. Would be happy to chat more in the diaspora! I've been meaning to be more active in the DE1 community too.
