WAY back in like 1972, I spent nearly a week's pay to buy tickets for two seats in the 4th row, to see Ray Charles performing live with B. B. King - the show of a lifetime. Asked my then-girlfriend to go with me, and she declined. Never asked her out again. BUT, the show was magnificent, even though I took someone else. And I totally melted when Ray and the Raylettes performed this number.
I had the honor and privilege of seeing Ray Charles live in concert 7 times in my lifetime. Three of those times, I saw the original Raelettes with the incredible Margie Hendrix. Awesome memories...
I was born 5 months later in the same state just 45 mins away. Some of the Artist that played at this Festival were flat out amazing. Mr. John Lee Hooker for one. Ray was a pro
The drums here are awesome! Much better than what was played only a year previously for the same song by Ray's band. This is the riff that Ringo Starr emulated for The Beatles' "I Feel Fine", and later was adopted for so many songs by The Allman Brothers.
+andula kolbl It wasn't a great time for a lot of people. And there was plenty of schlock music as well. But every age has its lights, and this one shines brighter than almost all of them.
This was a very pivotal song in in Music because it was next to Shout by The Islay Brothers one of the very first songs to cross from the R & B Chart to the Pop Chart. He influenced so many folks. Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, The Ronettes are some of the folks influenced by him. In the 1960's in Australia a Singer jammed Johnny O'Keefe brought the house down with this version. He hosted a Talent Show called sing Sing Sing where a young 16 Year Old won who became a legend in her own right. Her name Olivia Newton-John who was also influenced by him. He even helped Smokey Robinson with a musical arrangement when he was his supporting act at The Apollo Theater in 1959 but he bombed. They were so bad tat the Manager screamed for his Money back.
+Murindal Nice to know that young people appreciate his genius too. Ray Charles played at my senior prom in 1966. His piano was on the dance floor and we got to dance to all of his hits. It was an incredible experience.
What a showman! I saw Ray in 1967 on the Steel Pier in Atlantic City,N.J.Check out Ray "LIVE" at Newport doing a jazz session especially playing sax on Blues Walk.U-Tube is the best for bringing back the real music!
If you go to a concert where you know the artist you're going to see makes music that gets people out of their seat and moving, you'd best stay home if you're a sitter! When I saw the Who in 2000 (their last tour with John Entwistle), I basically stood for the entire show and the lady next to me sat. I mean, how the hell do you SIT through Won't Get Fooled Again or Baba O'Reily??!! Same thing for What'd I Say!!!
not scary not sure who would want to play for a bunch of white privelidge white folkes who are just gunna walk out the door and continue there awkard journey of whimsical satire against a darker shade of human ... ??? telling them where they cant piss or where they cant eat at the same place as them because you just happen to be a darker and ow well might not need sun tan lotion putting the verbage of fear on a people just living a normal life and making the people who really dont know why they are so scared to allow other humans to just live there lives just seems too stupid and easy, but thats the way yall always wanted it easy and stupid! white people waisted alot of time just coming up with reasons to hate other people mostly because of jealousy - being afraid of the truth - and ow FEAR !!!! YALL FEAR BEING INFERIOR ! these people on stage didnt fear YOU, They just didnt want to perform for a bunch of priviledge lucky hypocrits ... ever thought about that ... smh
Drummer deserves massive respect. This song is not easy to play.
Crazy
I think the drummer may be Bruno Carr but I'm not positive.
ikr? The drummer is one that made the song what it is IMO

Can't imagine turning down a Ray Charles concert, her loss!
Nice....

I love his music. I sometimes tend to think I was born in the wrong era. Lol... This is real music when it was beautiful and brought people together.
@Den M Right, the music of that time is some of the best. ☺️
Same here
The greatest singer in the history of popular music. God bless you, Ray

Enjoyed watching the folks in the audience..
I'd love to be there!!!
A sophomore in high school... this was a phenomenal experience back then. Great mix of Ray Charles' live shows.
The genius is still on the stage, and we watching him...Ray Charles Robinson
Many years ago I bought the album “Ray Charles In Person”. I wore out the first copy and had to buy another one !
I was born in 1996. I really want to live in another time. In RayCharles time. No justin bieber ..

I love this live version!
Anna: I, saw Ray in person, 10 times. I want to go back to the 60's
It don't get much better than that!
Je pourrais dire avec le recule que Ray Charles a été l'inspirateur des géants comme Elvis Presley et bien d'autres.
He's amazing!!
he surely is amazing, I truly agree with you about that
IF RAY WAS ABLE TO SEE I GUARANTEE HE'D FIRE EVERYONE OF THOSE BAND MEMBERS LOOKIN LIKE THE DON'T WANNA BE THERE
I caught on that, I thought it was just me.
Astounding! I was jiving up one wall and down the other...with a little tap dance past the chandelier...
I remember hearing his first Newport jazz concert and it changed the way I listened to music forever
What a showman! I saw Ray in 1967 on the Steel Pier in Atlantic City,N.J.Check out Ray "LIVE" at Newport doing a jazz session especially playing sax on Blues Walk.U-Tube is the best for bringing back the real music!
Песня на все времена ! Впервые услышал лет шестьдесат назад.
A Fav of Ray's!
I SAW RAY OVER 1 million times beat that old people
great man, great music !!! TNX for sharing !!!
This is s treasure!!!!.
RAY CHARLES THE GREAT RAY CHARLES THE HIGH PRIEST MR RAY CHARLES
I also saw him in Atlantic City that year, but it wasn't at the Steel Pier it was at Convention Hall.
great song
A master
simply genius
Only performer that was able to do this song justice as well as Ray was Jerry Lee Lewis,. Like two different songs
Yeah, but Ray Charles didn't marry a 14-year-old cousin .......
@@EducatedSkepticI really don't think Ray gave a crap as he gave Jerry the right to record his song.
no way Rhode island?? my home!
That's some GREAT Mo-town, rock n roll right there!
You can tell that is the one and only Milt Turner on the drums. That guy made the song really move IMO.
...you heard it first on WEXF Radiofest '59...What'd I Say...
classic concert confrontation: standers vs. sitters. i'm a stander.

Right...I was offbase all over the place...wish the camera had shown the drummer on the cymbal.
sizzlin!
all those white folks thinking NOW THIS IS MUSIC

todos dançando!!!!!!
The two dudes at about the3:08 mark are feeling NO pain.
Original instrument was a Wurlitzer Electric Piano, not a Rhodes.'
strand baby I don't know which ears you listening with but that's about as accurate a recorded reproduction of a grand piano as I have heard recorded.
It is a great big shame that we went from this to rap.
Maybe you’re just not listening to the right rap or hip/hop.
Yep that's me at :34 , awkward and stiff
grande intro al piano...mauro dessy
trascinante ...mauro dessy
What? The sound is acoustic piano and it's not lipsynched
@ 4:01 "whoa...oh"
travolgente...mauro dessy
Anybody know the year or the place
Following
Well, up above, it says "Newport" (which is the Newport Jazz Festival, in Rhode Island) and the date given is 2 July 1960 ........
Newport in what state?
Uh, the Newport Jazz Festival is in Rhode Island ......
@@EducatedSkeptic cool
Anybody else notice how much the rest of the band don’t want to be there. Big crowd of white people back then was kinda scary.

Ray seems to like those "thick" sistas!
Hey this is lip-sync'ed. The sound is a Rhodes. Ray ain't playing one of them.
And where's the triangle?
