I don't mind, personally, I play with the big boys; but since you don't like to be told what to do. I suggest if you do this maybe you as the repeater operator should use your own CTCSS codes rather than being a clown and hogging 1 of only 7 Simplex channels. Ham radio snobs when you use repeaters and ham radios without a license: 🤓 “Erm, I’m reporting you to the FCC”. The FCC in real life: stop bothering us! We are incredibly underfunded and do not care.
That's why the early Internet was so great, there was a barrier to entry, you had to know a good deal just to get to that point. People were more helpful as well. Once everyone had access things went to shit pretty quickly 😆
@@origintrackz5235 I'm not saying people don't have a right to communication options by any means,I just don't want it ruined to were nobody can enjoy it,let alone make use of it. Just keep looking for decent people to talk to and learn from. We're having similar troubles in ham radio. Think of it this way. A few trips showed you many people you have no interest in talking to. It saved you a lot of time😂. Try a few of the different groups online. Both in this hobby and the hams. Somewhere you'll find a good group to learn from!

The MARS system is a great message handling system for just that. Weekends (Sundays I think) on shortwave. And you get to request surplus military equipment. 😅

We were building fully functional repeaters out of two mobile radios back in the early 1980s. Small enough to fit in a suitcase. Solid state isolation through filtering. Nothing digital. Worked like a charm.
Hams have thousands of frequencies they could choose to use at any time of the day or night yet they choose to sit on a single frequency for hours complaining when someone else extends their range to use it to talk to their friends or uses a frequency that no one else is using. They complain the bands are dead, they complain about newbies entering the hobby. They complain about new technologies being introduced to help the hobby yet they are still not happy. It’s hard to please these people…
There is a ton of rules and regulations of standardization around using radio in the United States. So something is simply as using a ham radio without acquiring the license and getting clearance to do so could involve trouble from the wall. At least once. Upon a time within a short period of time of you just broadcasting a simple signal. They would come to your door to make sure you're held accountable for abusing their radio waves LO. L just dumb government shit.
I didn’t understand a bit of it and not sure why repeating your words would be a problem unless it just takes over the entire channel and no one can communicate.
That would be because a core tenet of ham radio is that it is self-policing. If you don't want to play within the rules, don't complain when someone calls you out on your BS.
I think they are just mad because their hobby has become highly obsolete. Its like studying shorthand from the 30s. Nobody uses that, nobody needs to know how to write shorthand... when steno machines exist... when recording devices exist and speech to text exist... when AI exist. Its one of those "this is cool!" things that some people find the need to jump on. Highly regulated, price prohibitive for anyone thats trying to actually do anything with it since 2M is obsolete now that 10M is covered under Novice licenses and doesnt require moris code testing. But then you get into the need for expensive amps, big antennas and towers to put those antennas on... if you are wanting to actually talk to anyone. GMRS is for those of us that want to use a functional/quality handytalky without all the nonsense restrictions. I dont see a problem with the repeater. So what its on a simplex channel. Just dont use the repeater offset... Though, whats even the problem? Its not "unusable" Its MORE usable. You can talk further than you could before... you arnt going anywhere in the city without a repeater. I talked to my dad simplex with a long whip on my handheld and got about 3 miles max range. A repeater in the top of my 60 foot trees would reach his house 20 miles away and more. Anyone else could use it, i give zero fucks. Its not like anyone else has a repeater here... since nobody uses radios to talk, because we all have cell phones...
A "parrot box" as a repeater for GMRS isn't in and of itself illegal but use on a simplex channel is explicitly disallowed for 2 main reasons. 1) Repeaters can only transmit on the 462mhz main channels(15-22) per § 95.1763 2) Repeaters aren't allowed for FRS at all. Since the 'repeater' in the video replays everything it hears, and FRS radios can transmit on any of the simplex channels, that also makes it illegal. To use a "parrot box" within the rules, the radio acting as a repeater would have to receive on one of the proper repeater input frequencies(inaccessible to FRS radios), then replay the audio on the corresponding 462 main channel. Since most people are using radios like the UV5R for these repeaters anyway, the above is easily accomplished by simple programing with the correct frequencies and a reverse offset.
@@CzechSixTv I am still quite new to the hobby so I am far from an expert but the question for me after your suggestion of reading the "Rules" of 95.1763 is,... Is a "Parrot Box" & attached radio considered a Repeater if the radio receives message on one frequency, sends it to the Box then the Box replays it through the Radio to be transmitted on the same frequency ? I thought the definition of a Repeater is receiving & transmitting on two different frequencies ? A Parrot Box set up is no different from me sending a message to my buddy on 1 channel then him repeating the same message to my Wife on the same channel because she is too far from me for direct communications.

@@madtownjay4065 I'm not talking about band. He said it's weird. Talking on a radio( any band) is extremely normal, a repeater is normal. A competition key down truck is exceedingly rare and odd. I grew up with a ham father burying antennas in the yard, and I never heard of a key drop truck, so I figured he would find it as weird as I did.
@@BadHarmonicsbelieve it or not there is 2 key down trucks in my neighborhood one has 2 9ft whips and the other is a red suburban I believe with some crazy cophased groundplane radial antennas Im just waiting for they day I hear them key up lmao
My question would be, why not use the repeater channels. Thats weird. But then again near me a rest home uses channel 15 for daily operations. I know there is nothing wrong with that and you can just use a different pl tone and never really step on anyone but still thats odd too. Its more than likely somone had no idea how its supposed to work.
Or figured that since like 3 people per state use GMRS to talk with any regularity besides certain businesses, then setting up a repeater wasnt an issue. I think everyone has thought about doing something like this at one point or another, anyone thats more into it than a little anyway.
Think of a small rural community where most folks aren't hams or only have the lower cost simplex GMRS radios. This lowers cost to the community to have an effective emergency communications system. The simplex repeater owner may have access to the EOC via VHF and can send welfare messages via HF. This kind of setup is only a problem for ham Karens getting in a control freak frenzy.
I wouldn't think hams in the area would care. That's not part of our frequencies. I worry about keeping our frequencies to a good standard so they won't be taken away from us. Corporations try every year to take some of our frequencies. My only complaint about FRS or gmrs is business use of them.
And I think a community repeater is a Wonderful idea. I had a friend who kept a cb channel clean for that purpose. No cussing or improper language till after 10 pm! We could keep the radios on at the supper table around the kids! It was great!
Set up CTCSS tones for the repeater radio, then what’s the big deal? Then if anyone tries to talk on GMRS 5, you can just have the TX CTCSS tones set on your radio. If anyone is out there on ch5 your radio will hear them, but they won’t be interfering with the repeater or be in the repeater. If you leave your RX tones of your radio open, you will hear them, then this can be figured out from there. The problem you’re describing, actually makes 15-22 tough to talk on because around me, most of those are repeaters transmit channels as well. I’ll have to set tones just to have high power simplex convos, on those channels.

Okay yes according to the band plan, gmrs 5 is supposed to be simplex. However the device he is showing you. Is simplex. That's why they call them Simplex repeaters. Because it is recording the audio that it receives and then retransmitting the audio after it receives it. A true repeater is a duplex device meaning it has one frequency for the input one frequency for the output. So that wallet is receiving it is also retransmitting at the same time. Both of these systems do work to extend the range of two-way Communications equipment. However the the Simplex repeater or what is commonly referred to as it actually very useful. And the fact that it can be deployed easily without having to deal with Toon filter cavities duplexes and any number of other devices that end up in a repeater system to isolate the transmitter and receiver. Also it can be used in a portable or mobile operation. These have been used by commercial radio companies by the military and by amateur radio operators since the invention of digital voice recording circuits, actually before that they did have one that used Magnetic Tape but it didn't work very well and wore out fairly quickly. So to sum it up what he's actually demonstrating is a Simplex use of a Simplex frequency truthfully his beef is the fact that there's no operator most likely where that radio is. And no one is controlling it and turning it on and off when it's not in need. But under the fcc's definition that would still meet at a simplex use. Because the radio must receive the signal pause and then we transmit the signal and it all takes place on the same frequency. The definition of simplex. I do see his frustration with these devices, as they are readily available by any number of Chinese import apps or Amazon eBay or whatever. You just plug it into your boof Fong handheld, and by the way may or may not be useful for the service you're actually using it on. You cannot use any of those chinese-made radios in the commercial land mobile Radio Service frequencies. They do not meet the FCC requirements they're only usable by amateur radio operators because of the wide tolerances that they're given. Even in that case some of those radios exceed the tolerances that ham operators are even allowed to deviate from.
Umm.. not to offend you but I'm thinking an actual repeater has a different function.. It takes the receive frequency and retransmits it on another frequency.. The listeners of that particular channel need to have their received frequency tuned into the transmitters transmit frequency and they need to transmit into the transmitter's received frequency. That's the common setup.. But I could be wrong😊 I used to be a regular user of "autopatch"... Free phone calls over the radio before cell phones were a thing

I have the same setup on Simplex it's technically not a repeater since it operates using one frequency simplex. Not a duplex repeater. Surecom sr-112. is the controller. It's not illegal it can be annoying for some people if all of the gmrs channels are being currently used but typically that's not the case . I have a simplex gmrs repeater and a duplex Yaesu system Fusion. You can use cross ctcs tones so only the replayed audio is heard on all of the other radios but the uplink recorded audio is not heard
I imagine its only illegal if it does not bother someone thats more accurate I think. we can come to agreement on that point I feel. I rather enjoy listening to myself talk so I loike it and the guys a character....link to full video is on the UA-cam Short
FRS channels 1-14 are not allowed repeaters and the transmission power is supposed to be low. GMRS channels 15 to 22 are allowed repeaters and transmission power of 50 watts.
What is actually showing you is a Simplex re-transmission system. It's not a true repeater. Because the radio operates on the same frequency. It must receive the signal pause key the transmitter play the signal back. Yes it does repeat the audio. But it does not repeat it to another frequency which would be the definition of a repeater and what the FCC is referring to in the band plan. This device could be used with any power level. Because it is not a modification of the radio or the antenna system it's just a module plugged into the microphone and speaker. That does not make it a violation of any rule other than it is annoying. When people leave these things on and forget that other people do use the service. Until we crack down on the excessive importation of these radios. That come pre-programmed and there's no FCC enforcement of the service. Eventually it will just turn into what citizens band has become or worse. At least with Citizens Band 11 m, it's a little more difficult to get high powered mobile and amplifiers. With the current gmrs system any surplus UHF two-way radio can be returned to work on those frequencies. And unless you're working on something that was made in the 80s it's going to be computer programmable so there's not a whole lot of work to be done. With a click of a few Keys you could have a 110 watt mobile if you wanted it. For the ultimate Rarity in UHF there were some base stations, that put out up to 500 w. They're rare, and one of them are out there probably are in need of repair or are still in operation. But should somebody find one and put it on the are unless the FCC wants to stop then there's nothing that's going to stop them. Also there's a whole lot of companies that make RF power amplifiers including the really wide band dirty nasty ones that will amplify from HF all the way up to almost microwave. There are available really cheap on the internet. Those are also helping destroy the radio service. Assuming everyone followed the rules gmrs would work quite nicely. But since everyone thinks a small little minor violation isn't a problem even though everybody's making little minor violations it becomes a cumulative problem
That isn’t much of a thing anymore because the local first responders and authorities are all swapping to locked channels that cant be accessed due to their digital features
Doesn't it more depend on HOW the SIMPLEX Repeater Box is set up than the Box itself ?... Simplex Repeaters are NOT allowed on Repeater Channels and Duplex Repeaters MUST be on Repeater Channels. I "believe" that the Surecom SR-112 can be set up to work on ONE Frequency which makes it Simplex OR can work with Radio's set to Receive & Transmit on TWO different Frequencies which would then make it Duplex right ?
I just know one cannot occupy a channel without announcing the repeaters name every 30 min and morris ever 15...something like that, my bad been at the beach all summer lol
How about your GMRS calling? Failure to ID is illegal. And, what you are demonstrating is not a repeater. It is called a simplexor, and is not specifically prohibited under 47CFR95, but it isn’t specifically permitted, either. There is a difference between ‘illegal’ and ‘not legal’.

I'm not sure that's illegal. I can't find the FCC rule - maybe about automatic operation? It's colloquially called a simplex repeater but it's not really a repeater it seems to me. It also would not tie up the channel if it uses a privacy tone, even a digital one.
@StuffOK since you haven't done your homework before bleating online about simplex GMRS message forwarding. Part 95 defines a repeater station as a station that receives on one channel and then transmits on another. So a message forwarding station is NOT a repeater station. Part 95 does not address message forwarding in any way so it is not illegal. Part 97 (for hams) is the model for message forwarding. See 97.219. There is no requirement for the forwarding station to ID and the responsibility is with the original message sender. These GMRS simplex message forward stations are legal and moral. Based on the FCC regulations and available information, the use of a simplex retransmitter (also known as a simplex repeater) is not legal on GMRS frequencies in the United States. Here's a detailed explanation: 1. GMRS Repeater Regulations: The FCC rules for GMRS, outlined in 47 CFR Part 95 Subpart E, specifically define how repeaters can be used in the GMRS service[1][2]. According to these regulations: - GMRS repeaters are only allowed to operate in duplex mode, using specific input and output frequency pairs. - The 467 MHz channels may only be used as repeater inputs, in conjunction with the 462 MHz channels as outputs. 2. Prohibition of Simplex on Repeater Input Frequencies: The FCC rules explicitly prohibit simplex operation on repeater input frequencies. As stated in 47 CFR §95.1763(c), "You may not operate a GMRS repeater station, or a GMRS base station or fixed station transmitting on the GMRS repeater input channels, unless you have a written agreement with the owner of the GMRS repeater station to use that repeater."[2] 3. Potential Interference: Using a simplex retransmitter on GMRS frequencies could potentially cause interference with legitimate duplex repeater operations, even if no repeater is currently active in your immediate area[3]. 4. Licensing and Authorization: GMRS requires a license, and the license terms specifically authorize the use of equipment in accordance with FCC rules. A simplex retransmitter would not comply with these rules and therefore would not be covered under a GMRS license[2]. 5. Specific Channel Restrictions: The FCC has designated specific channels and their uses within the GMRS band. For example, certain 462 MHz channels are designated for simplex use, while others are paired with 467 MHz channels for duplex repeater operation[1]. Using a simplex retransmitter would violate these channel designations. While simplex retransmitters may be useful in other radio services like amateur radio, they are not permitted in GMRS. The FCC has structured GMRS to use specific frequency pairs for repeater operation to ensure efficient use of the spectrum and minimize interference. It's important to note that violating FCC rules can result in penalties, including fines and license revocation. If you need extended range communication in GMRS, consider using an authorized duplex repeater setup or exploring other radio services that might allow for simplex retransmitter operation. One group hunted down powerline transformers and other sources of powerline noise. When fixed it also helped the community. We have to strive for many of these things just to keep our frequencies from corporate America. Sorry to say, I can't believe the useless negative crap in the comments. And it's infecting posts across the net.

Im just finally unleashing the power of the baofeng and have come across channels that carry a nice quiet static sound almost like someone is holding down the talk button but not saying anything and then it will cut off to nothing
I don't understand what you're saying, but one time I was using one of those cheap $50 Midland radios for work. I had the VOX setting on and my partner kept making a lot of noise thus triggering the VOX on the radio. It was Bleeping way too much. Then out of nowhere some guy was yelling at us to "STFU on the radio! You guys are nonstop!" Could I get in trouble for that? I just ended up switching channels.
naw....but if you continue, they can find you, then report you. If you're messing with a club like ours we can sue you, in Federal Court. The airways are very clear, and its a small small world. Those that know little think they are invisible, far from it, very easily tracked and or known in an area very quickly, as an annoyance.
@@Baasicstuff Right, so how does one avoid being annoying? There was nobody on the channel. Until the whole sensitive VOX situation we found out we were being a nuisance. Another time I was talking to my partner at another work place and I noticed that the company's radios (GMRS) would receive some static everytime I spoke through my cheap Midland FRS radio. In the end I decided to just stop using them
A friend of mine had a repeater on 462.725 until an unlicensed DMR business repeater appeared on the frequency. When he contacted the owner he was told to get lost. He shut his repeater off and sold out.
SHould have served him with a lawsuit, these clowns are easy to find. Easy win or contact the FCC which may do nothing cause they are useless government
im in aus, someone had a repeater on ch6 near where i live, it was the same length transmission repeated but it was all just static so it must have been to far away
"Makes the frequency unusable." Hmm, does the repeater keep repeating over and over again? I don't see the purpose myself, unless the strategy is intended for extending range.
I am a noob who just started understanding HAM GMRS, repeater simplex, and ext. What I got from this video is this repeater was set up wrong, and instead of having offset for Rx and Tx, it uses the same frequencies(also no values set for CTCSS)? or because it copies Rx, Tx frequencies of another repeater (and CTCSS)?
@@puckfutin2022 well simply put you can’t run a repeater on a non-repeater channel. A repeater must also identify itself every 15 minutes and every 30 minutes completely with location or identification. Due to the set up being so poor it’s almost as bad as dead 🔑 on a Symplex channel and a dead key can affect up to 25 miles in all directions. But this one’s located high up in a tree so it probably affects up to 50 miles and all directions.
Sounds like a surecom sr-112. I use one, but on 462.550/467.5500 with a CTCSS tone. Poorman's repeater essentially, so I can talk back to home base with a walkie talkie while around town.
GMRS and other itinerants are subject to accept any and all interference, they are not discrete licensed channels. The repeater is illegal first because it’s certainly a Baofeng, but also because repeaters TX at higher ERPs but also to reduce channel interference because repeaters are licensed separately from traditional LMR channels due to geo coverage and licensing requirements
I still don’t understand how it makes the channel unusable. Is the repeater transmitting at a power level above the legal limit? Or is it bleeding into other frequencies different from the original transmission?
So what if you use an MTX Midland on GSRM not a non-ham radio would that be illegal to have your hand radio talk to a MTX handheld walkie-talkie non-radio I don’t know if I stayed the question right?
If there ever was a real bad SHTF situation, I don’t think anyone without a bloody license will give a poop about using what ever radios they bought for a SHTF situation and will use them!
if you dont practice you will not be very good at using them, I sucked for a bit but now I can find, and program a repeater very quickly. Its like having a cell phone in the woods that has great service
Could you please tell me how that makes the channel unusable? As far as I'm concerned, it makes it extra usable. Bigger range better range. Who doesn't want that Ed?
lots of rude comments here, anyways could this be a pretty handy setup for testing signal propagation in say, a remote desert area? I hang out in northern nevada a lot and this would be handy for testing out different setups, i suppose just set it at a medium wattage and drive away and test?
One time while testing the radio base stations I started doing my test calls on what I thought would be an empty net. It was on a Tac net that went directly to all officers and dispatch! Fun times
GMRS 5 is a simplex channel designed for radio to radio communication 5 Watts MAX GMRS Channels (Simplex): Channels 1-7 and 15-22: 5 watts for handheld radios, up to 50 watts for base stations and mobile radios. Repeater Input Channels: Channels 15-22: 5 watts for handheld radios, up to 50 watts for base stations and mobile radios. FRS Channels (Simplex): Channels 8-14: Maximum power output of 0.5 watts. 8-14 are receive only on most Mobles and Base stations but require you to operate on Low power with the GMRS HTs
What I like about GMRS is I can hand a radio to my family or friends and they are free to use my call sign. Great for Camping, emergencies, Fishing, Shooting trips, etc
Just remember that our licence doesn't allow us to talk on their frequencies. Have the respect, if nothing else, to take their test and get their license. Studying for my extra. Cross your fingers. Don't know if I can cram all of that into my hard head.
I don't know what you'd call that, but that's not a repeater. A repeater uses separate RX and TX frequencies. Also, I doubt this is "illegal", since you can use GMRS legally now for commercial use, and it's not illegal to automate transmissions.
It is a repeater,, and it is simplex ! Channel is still fully usefull bacause the simplex repeater (normally) cant be acessed with out using a PL tone.
@@Baasicstuff It is not even "acting" like a repeater. 95.303 defines a repeater as "receiving their signals on one channel (the input channel) and simultaneously retransmitting these signals on another channel (the output channel)," It is NOT simultaneously retransmitting and it is NOT on an input/output frequency.

I really need this explaining in simple terms for my simple brain to understand.
I didn’t understand a bit of it and not sure why repeating your words would be a problem unless it just takes over the entire channel and no one can communicate.

Radio to radio would be instantaneous. Repeater, transfers what you said during your whole key time.
You ham nerds are the hobby equivalent of hall monitors

That would be because a core tenet of ham radio is that it is self-policing.
If you don't want to play within the rules, don't complain when someone calls you out on your BS.
Unfortunately, boneheads like you were the reason we had to have a hall monitor.

I'm new to the sport but yeah, I thought those recorder type Repeater Boxes were Simplex Repeater Boxes.
@@davidyummus6259 Hobby, it's not a sport much like chess isn't a sport lol
A "parrot box" as a repeater for GMRS isn't in and of itself illegal but use on a simplex channel is explicitly disallowed for 2 main reasons.
1) Repeaters can only transmit on the 462mhz main channels(15-22) per § 95.1763
2) Repeaters aren't allowed for FRS at all.
@@CzechSixTv
I am still quite new to the hobby so I am far from an expert but the question for me after your suggestion of reading the "Rules" of 95.1763 is,...

@obeyance your not wrong. All i ever hear is frs kids radios and a assisted living facility

This could definitely come in handy. Thanks.

That isn’t much of a thing anymore because the local first responders and authorities are all swapping to locked channels that cant be accessed due to their digital features
You just used it????😂
Well sure I would, its on a public channel? Raining today, pure static today

@StuffOK since you haven't done your homework before bleating online about simplex GMRS message forwarding. Part 95 defines a repeater station as a station that receives on one channel and then transmits on another. So a message forwarding station is NOT a repeater station. Part 95 does not address message forwarding in any way so it is not illegal. Part 97 (for hams) is the model for message forwarding. See 97.219. There is no requirement for the forwarding station to ID and the responsibility is with the original message sender. These GMRS simplex message forward stations are legal and moral. @@garrettstephens91 a repeater can be dualplex or simplex. You can get a simplex repeater from MFJ for about $65
@@garrettstephens91 not all repeaters are dualplex.
Based on the FCC regulations and available information, the use of a simplex retransmitter (also known as a simplex repeater) is not legal on GMRS frequencies in the United States. Here's a detailed explanation:
1. GMRS Repeater Regulations:
The FCC rules for GMRS, outlined in 47 CFR Part 95 Subpart E, specifically define how repeaters can be used in the GMRS service[1][2]. According to these regulations:
- GMRS repeaters are only allowed to operate in duplex mode, using specific input and output frequency pairs.
- The 467 MHz channels may only be used as repeater inputs, in conjunction with the 462 MHz channels as outputs.
2. Prohibition of Simplex on Repeater Input Frequencies:
The FCC rules explicitly prohibit simplex operation on repeater input frequencies. As stated in 47 CFR §95.1763(c), "You may not operate a GMRS repeater station, or a GMRS base station or fixed station transmitting on the GMRS repeater input channels, unless you have a written agreement with the owner of the GMRS repeater station to use that repeater."[2]
3. Potential Interference:
Using a simplex retransmitter on GMRS frequencies could potentially cause interference with legitimate duplex repeater operations, even if no repeater is currently active in your immediate area[3].
4. Licensing and Authorization:
GMRS requires a license, and the license terms specifically authorize the use of equipment in accordance with FCC rules. A simplex retransmitter would not comply with these rules and therefore would not be covered under a GMRS license[2].
5. Specific Channel Restrictions:
The FCC has designated specific channels and their uses within the GMRS band.
