Hey thank for making this, I will be tracking your progress and will make a 1 year video on my food forest here in Maui in July. Following similar principles that you are utilizing!

Loving the tropical food forest! I’m working on my own temperate one here in zone 6.

Nice! I used to be in zone 7 in MD. There’s some key differences but I have been able to use a lot of what I learned there. Sometimes I miss having an off season. It can be exhausting to go full tilt all year. Aloha!

Great job there, thank you. How is the water situation over there? Do you have enough water?

Aloha Tom! The water situation is ok. We get a lot of annual rainfall but we do have long dry periods. We are very fortunate to have county water on our property. Most of the houses around us rely completely on catchment. We have a 1500 gallon tank to add to our water security.

It looks like the guinea grass will just take over everywhere! How do you keep fighting it back? Once the ground cover is in place does it tend to crowd out the guinea grass?

It is pretty tough to tame. I dig it completely out and then have to be diligent about weeding while the ground cover takes over but the more shade the trees make, the less aggressive the Guinea grass gets.

Does Joey Hewitt have a public nursery? Or does he sell on Facebook Marketplace or anything? Mahalo!

Joe does not have a public nursery and I actually havent seen him in a couple of years but I’m friends with someone who works for him and I know he is really busy so I’d be surprised if he was selling anywhere.

Where do you get all your plant seeds or seedlings? Online? Local store? Local nursery?

It’s been a variety of places. I’ve bought plants from Elemental and Plant It Hawaii nurseries, Green Garden Guy, I’ve planted seeds from fruit that I’ve eaten, I’ve found stands of trees on the side of the road like ice cream bean where I could collect seeds, I’ve been gifted a number of plants, I’ve air layered from a few trees that I was given access to and I’ve ordered a couple of things online that I had a hard time finding here.
