Speaking as somebody whose partner has worked most of his working life at a Zoo, I can say pretty definitively that Zoos in theory should primarily function as conservation institutes. Some zoos, like sea world, are more akin to circuses and legitimate claims against them could for sure be made, but at least for the most part, Zoos like, for instance the Montréal Biodôme, The Ecomuseum (also in Montréal), and Toronto Zoo operate firstly as research centres and use the money acquired from visitation to fund further research and conservation efforts. The idea that a Zoo is inherently anything is one that rests squarely on the intent of a particular institution. But certainly, it’d be stupid to generalize Zoos as being altogether bad.
Yeah, I had this discussion in the past too. Some people claim that is just an excuse to watch animals in cages, but frankly, I rather watch an animal in an habitat which was built for it, where people care around the clock for it and where important scientific data is collected which is then used to treat animals which still live in the wilderness, than to see an animal which is held as a pet for the amusement of their owners.
Very true, but Zoos also keep in mind space within cages for the mental health of animals, as well as mental activity with toys and parts of their natural eco-system. The cages themselves can even be attributed to the educational purpose of Zoos, but I believe Wildlife Safaris do a better job with space.
+Ryan Hamlett Zoos help is many ways that aren't even thought of. To believe they are inherently evil is silly. Well, I think modern zoos are much better. Most the ones I know of aren't actually cages, they're large habitats with plenty of room for animals to run and do what they do. They also, I don't think, just take random animals anymore, they take animals who would otherwise not survive. Now, that's in the U.S. and probably other developed countries. Not sure about less developed parts of the world. That said I"m pretty sure "Star Trek" and the various spin off shows have made similar remarks about other, everyday, issues we take for granted today and commented on them in the same manner. Granted, most of hte time when the original series did it, it was stuff that was, in the 60's, already passed such as condemning slavery but I'm sure there was a similar reference to the folly of combustion engines and probably other stuff (which I had exact examples but I don't recall them exactly).
We've had a saucer separation in Star Trek. Trek has always had elements of hope and optimism as well as conflict and darkness. These two elements have split and are no longer moderating each other. So now we have a Star Trek that is darker than ever, and the other is goofier than ever.

While I agree with what you said about the ex-wife XO, there is one technical issue you missed out on. On Star Trek Voyager, Janeway and Chakotay have exactly the same seating arrangement on the bridge; captain on screen left, the XO on screen right. Neither chair is set in the center of the bridge. So Chakotay does have "equal seating" with his captain too. Just FYI.
Well the reason it's more Abrams is because during the development the original writing staff were actually veteran Star Trek writers from various past series and originally was going to take place in the main universe. But somewhere along the line a big chunk, if not all of them, were fired and the series it was announced that the series would be taking place in the Abramsverse.

...I am fascinated how much you missed the point of the third episode from the Orville. No, this is not about being or not being able to influence other cultures. It is actually a criticism of conservatism, aber systems which push through toxic laws even if they are proven to be based on inherently wrong premise. That the goal is to supress females is the icing on the cake, because it mirrors the way how conservatives suppress females, but taken to the extreme. And no, it is not criticising gender change in transexuals, it is actually pro trans, because the very point is that parents SHOULDN'T decide what gender their child should have, that it SHOULD be the decision of the child. And how much it can hurt a child if a parent insist on a child being a certain gender.
they established a "believable" reason why she is the XO. The Union didn't want to give him a ship unless she was his XO and it was her idea to even give him a command of a ship in the first place so... And about the zoo, it is known that zoo got way to small enclosures for the wild animals. However she didn't say anything about "Nature reserves".
Save that WIAGW noise its pretty great. I am about to watch through every star trek series and Ill be looking forward to it. Once i finish catching up on the new voltron.
Calm down, the chairs are not blue pill, it's actually the most realistic bridge seating in any SciFi show and has the added benefit of making it easier to frame the camera for when they're talking. On a real ship, there are two identical seats on the bridge, the left hand (port side) seat is for the Captain (only) and the right-hand one is for the XO or a visiting admiral. Take a tour of one the next time your local fleet week happens or visit a floating museum. It makes all the sense in the world. If there are any blue pills it's on Discovery. *puke*
Awesome show! You intelligence, energy and analysis (not to mention good looks) won this genius level 56 year old gay/bi man over. Yeah, I know you are straight, respect. Did you not watch the episode? She had experience with the klingon and asked someone with experience with the klingon, and with this information came to the conclusion that the klingon were there to attack, and the best option was to show themselves as powerful. She did not start a war, she acted in a way the klingon would understand to reduce victims
When you're finished with Star Trek, go look up Star Trek Hidden Frontiers, Star Trek New Voyages, and Axanar. Also look for Star Trek Outpost, you'll be impressed especially with Outpost.
I don't know if somebody mentioned this already but Michael didn't start the war. She consulted with Sarek who told her about the Vulcan hello... She tried to avoid the war...
folks this is very easy. star trek discovery is based on how we see the future from our current society. the orville is basically taking it back in the late 80's to mid 90's with star trek the next generation. there are 4 kinds of people at the moment. those who dont watch either those who only watch star trek discovery, those who only watch the orville and those who are smart and enjoy both discovery and the orville. it really is a better world when you love both no matter what the flaws.
Go watch first 3 episode of STD again - Michael didn't start war (she tried to stop it by attack Klingon leader ship before they assemble war council and she is stopped with lead to face off between federation fleet and Klingon clans fleet )
It was so weird to watch Star Trek and dislike the main character. I think you need to have some kind of affection for a main character to like a series.
I thought the first episode of Orville had some pacing and weird issues with jokes.. but by episode 3 i was HOOKED... that story in episode 3 or 4 with the female baby... OMG... so good.
ummm, how did you miss the press releases and interviews with producers for a full year before DSC came out? They fully stated the ENTIRE season was going to be about the Klingon war. The same Klingon war many Trek fans have been clamouring to see for years...
When someone says "Hard SciFi" when referencing Star Trek, I have to laugh. Warp drives and transporters are no less space magic than hyperdrives and plasma swords. Star Trek is not hard science fiction, it just uses employs more technobabble to try and sell it. I'll agree Star Trek is a bit more cerebral when it comes to philosophical discussions, but that's where the divergence ends. I loved the philosophical headiness of Babylon 5, but that wasn't hard science fiction either.
I wouldn't say zoos are inherently evil, but they do cause suffering. It is like a life-sentence where you don't get to act as an animal, don't get to pick your mates and are confined to a small space with no chance of getting out. I love zoos, and i understand how important they are, so for now, the good outways the bad. Especially since there will hardly be any animals left in the wild in 150 years.
I love the video! Let me tell you about my experience, I got CBS all access on demand just to watch Star Trek. I watched 3 episodes and cancelled my subscription. To be fair, I cancelled it in the first 15 minutes of episode 4. Then I watch the Orville and I watched every single episode and I wanted more! And the fact of the matter is. I want more Orville I don't want more Discovery. Ultimately that's what it comes down to. What do I want to watch? Depressing Discovery? Or fun Orville?
I agree on most things but Star Trek has never been "Hard Scifi". Never. There are always compromises in science for the sake of the plot. If you want hardscifi i think "The Expanse" is the nearest you can get on a TV-show, but most "Hard scifi" takes place in literature. And it's maybe notable that good "hard scifi" in literature has mostly bad, or boring plots. That's the reason hardscifi authors after the 70s stopped caring mostly for plot and these books are small and thin, but the ideas presented there are awesome. But your categorization of Star Trek as "Philosophy show" is on point.
Guy, SW is soapy space opera, all about the family drama with laZors. Star Trek, is just plain simple SF it does not need to be HARD imo. What I see as hard SF is 2001, maybe something that takes itself seriously(Star Trek doing that? COME ON!) like The Expanse. I would maybe, put the TOS as hard SF but then again, when that show was made, what was not dead serious? Neeway, good vid, like your style and presentation, subbed.
I don't like that the Orville's XO never *really* apologizes for her betrayal. It's always "I'm sorry I hurt you BUT..." That's not an apology. As for the command chairs being paired together, that's what they had on Voyager. Janeway's chair was right next to Chakotay's chair.
I was with you until you said Star Trek was "hard sci-fi", and that "Encounter at Farpoint" was the best premier episode ever. And then like you with the Orville, I started wondering. "Wait, is this a joke, or is it serious?"
about the zoo argument, there is a lot of subtext like how if we dont see the wrong in imprisoning animals, then if a superior species decides to lock us up can we really see it as immoral? the first officer states that humanity decided to ban animal imprisonment because we are superior to them and all sentient life deserves to be free.
SDT exhousted my "suspension of disbeliefe" by: Klingons war motives - they react for the federation like for a Borg invasion - why? Spore drive - no comments, stupidity of main haracter and plot - first "we cant kill T'kuvma because it will triger the war" than she killed him - and she grew up on Volcan? It's terrible as Star trek, and avarage as scifi, The Expanse is so much better in every way. The Oville didn't insult my intelect so far, it has good written haracters, interesting dilemas, lightened by "office" humor - it's just good both as Star trek and scifi.
Spot on, I agree on every point. The Orville isn't perfect, I could do without the humor, but it sure as hell beats STD. The latter might improve, which appears to be the whole premise of the show, which is "hang in there long enough for it to improve eventually" in the meantime watching it is borderline an ordeal.
Orville is great. Did you notice the part at the end when they show it was his wife that helped arrange for his assignment aboard the Orville? That and his reaction to his ex coming aboard tell me he didn't have much of a choice. they also make it clear his ex wife messed up big and wants to make amends.
Aside from a good amount (maybe little less than half) of the humor not landing for me, the Orville is actually really fun. I've seen a lot of people shitting on Seth's acting and while he is very wooden he isn't fucking horrible like some people say. I was actually surprised when they started getting actual social issues and morality. That recent episode with the wormhole was legitimately really good.
She did not start the war. She attempted to PREVENT the war by taking over the ship. But she was stopped before she could fire. If she had, likely it would have ended up being a skirmish instead of a war, and many lives would have been saved.
Watch ST:D as it takes place in the alternative universe that we can see here and there in DS9. Its a darker universe and ST:D fits perfectly in the alternative universe.
I like how "critics" love STD and hate the Orville, but for "normal" fans it's the other way around.
(critics are just the speakers for internal ideals that are agreed on within board meetings)
That's critics for you they tend to love crap and dump over good stuff. That's because most critics are either failed film makers or wanted to make movies but never got their crap together to make anything so they're bitter hacks.
Critics love whatever the person sending the check tells them to love. Fans are little more honest.
Normal people appreciate both

It's certainly harder than say, Star Wars, but most sci-fi media doesn't have to try too hard to achieve that.

"STD, that sticks in the brain"
Well it does if its Syphillis!
I don't like that the Orville's XO never *really* apologizes for her betrayal. It's always "I'm sorry I hurt you BUT..." That's not an apology. As for the command chairs being paired together, that's what they had on Voyager. Janeway's chair was right next to Chakotay's chair.
Ensuring that he gets his life back on track is though.
I was with you until you said Star Trek was "hard sci-fi", and that "Encounter at Farpoint" was the best premier episode ever. And then like you with the Orville, I started wondering. "Wait, is this a joke, or is it serious?"
Star Trek Into Darkness plays like a DS9 episode. It reminds me of In a Pale Moonlight.
My Dad is a die-hard old Star trek fan and he loves the Orville
Bestie boy lookin' good as fuck in that mesh uniform.
about the zoo argument, there is a lot of subtext like how if we dont see the wrong in imprisoning animals, then if a superior species decides to lock us up can we really see it as immoral? the first officer states that humanity decided to ban animal imprisonment because we are superior to them and all sentient life deserves to be free.
Someone browses /tv/
Hey, I don't blame him, it's a big board
LaserFace23 UUUU
LaserFace23
It's too memey to discuss the shows for my liking.
MrLCGO I agree, lol. Though if you specifically want to have conversations derailed by memespouting, I can think of no better place.
If he took off those sunglasses, would he die?
25:05 now that thatistheplan is dead I think best guy ever has the next bestest teeth in the game
There is a big clue in the actual names of these two shows.
I live for bge uploads
Wait, Rudolph the goddamn reindeer exists in the world of the Orville? (also rudolph rejected the nose reassignment surgery of his species)
Star Wars The New Hope saved Star Trek, because Star Wars brought back Sci-Fi to the public.
Nate your really good, like you're the best Guy ever
I love them both for some reason
Um Voyager the Captain and First Officer seat were like Orville's
She did not start the war. She attempted to PREVENT the war by taking over the ship. But she was stopped before she could fire. If she had, likely it would have ended up being a skirmish instead of a war, and many lives would have been saved.
Last man is a show made by Mondo I saw the first episode on UA-cam. Seems interesting, wish it was available for free
Watch ST:D as it takes place in the alternative universe that we can see here and there in DS9. Its a darker universe and ST:D fits perfectly in the alternative universe.
