🔥 Is this video too long? Watch 55 versions of Pac-Man in 10 minutes: • 55 Pac-Man Versions in...
This video covers official versions of Pac-Man only, so please don’t ask for clones or homebrew versions. Despite our best efforts we weren't able to add all licensed ports we know, such as PC-8001mkII, Windows Phone and Windows (2004) games. If we manage to get all of them in the future we could make an extended version of this video.
Namco published many J2ME versions in order to support the wide variety of mobile screen sizes of the time. We have included three of them with noticeably different screen resolutions under the J2ME label.
Pac-Man Collection (GBA), Namco Museum 50th Anniversary (GBA) and the Game Gear, Game Boy and Game Boy Color versions features two game modes, one that shows the whole game scenery and another with scroll. This video features both modes.
Regarding the Android port, since its first release in 2009, Namco developed several different versions of the game featuring brand new modes and features. This video presents the original version from 2009, which is the most similar to the Arcade, and the one released in 2018.

The first VIC-20 version was surprisingly good for being such an early port. Though, I guess it isn't too surprising, given it came from HAL Laboratory of all things.
It was so good commodore got sued and they had to rename it Jelly Monsters. But then Commodore created their own clone called C=osmic cruncher. And about 2 years later Atarisoft released the official version on the Vic. There's another good one called Quickman and Quickman 2k8.
@@summer20105707If my memory serves right, Commodore only got sued for selling it in America, as Atarisoft owned the license to Pac-Man in home computers and consoles for America. But in Japan it was perfectly fine
2:31 The creator of this port is HAL Laboratory. If that name sounds familiar, that's because they made the _Kirby_ games.
Atari later used the code for HALl's game "Taxman" with alterations for the Apple II version of Pac Man by Atarisoft. Thanks in part to Midway and Namco suing.
Don't forget Earthbound/MOTHER
Taxman for smash Bros
Also they made smash bros

Man oh man, sitting here watching an hour and fourteen minutes of nothing but the first level of Pac-Man with the only difference being the resolutions and styles of the different ports, those of us who were able to endure the whole thing should be given medals. Lol! Lots of respect though, I didn't realize how many ports of this one game were out there now. I know it's an arcade classic but geeze come on! How many times can you port the same game to how many consoles at once? I also have to ask, how long did it take you to make this video? All of that Pac-Man game play alone must have taken weeks (hence the respect). ✋
Back in the 80's and 90's it was pretty common for a lot of arcade games to receive ports to pretty much every console and computer out there, often having a lot of sacrifices because the arcade machines were a lot more powerful than home computers and game consoles.
Why does he have GBA arrangement mode, but not Arcade or 360/PSP arrangement mode?
Thanks! I believe that it took me about three weeks to complete the video. First, trying to get all the ports and run them properly (some japanese systems are tricky to configure and I spent many hours trying to get some games), then playing all versions (I had to do it many times to get a decent gameplay) and finally editing the video (that part wasn't difficult but took me a lot of time because the volume of ports).
Man oh man, I just spent 10 minutes of my life reading a comment about the video that I watched for an hour of my life. Great Comment

It's a shame the ColecoVision version never got released - it's one of the better-looking early 80's ports. The ghosts look downright menacing when moving up or down and I love that "reverse dissolve" effect when they reappear in their box in the centre.
EDIT: The sound of Pac-Man eating pellets in the Apple ][ version sounds like vegetables being chopped up.
Yes. PacMan 1980 still a true masterpiece.
I agree with you - that Coleco version would have been the best home port by far for the time.
I love how J2ME version has no sound except for start music, eating ghost sound effect and eating cherries sound effect
And I love the piano sound effects

Pac-Man has aged very well and even though it's hard to mess him up. He stayed pretty faithful to the original arcade release over the years and on different consoles. What a great and timeless classic. Great comparison video.
i say its pretty easy to mess up pac-man, theres a lot of details that might be hard to notice, such as pac-man slowing down while eating dots
Wow, loving how this video breaks it down. I will always opt for Ms. Pac-Man in its arcade form, but there is definitely a wild difference between all of the version. Props on attempting this amazing topic!
I have never felt more pride in my life than getting Pacman to run on the SharpX1.
I don't think many people understand how much effort must go into these videos. But after days of messing around with Japanese computer emulators, I understand.
Msx was really cute with the ghosts looking up and down, all stars looks really clean and well done, and arrangement is just madness
Arrangement looks like those classic Nitrome Flash games, and that's a compliment if you ask me.

good job! 👏
My opinion on these versions:
Coleco Tabletop: Well, that must be the most embarrassing thing Coleco ever made. Annoying sounds, ghosts aren't ghosts, the pac-man is small... 1/5
VIC-20(HAL): It's okay, but the sounds when a ghost returns back to their house are annoying. 4.5/5
Tomy Tabletop: MUCH better than Coleco, but still isn't perfect. 2.5/5
Atari 2600: It's ok, but it would be more playable without flickering.(Yes, i know about hardware limitations.) 3/5
Atari 5200: It would be the best port for pacman, if it wasn't on Atari 5200, and if it didn't had the sound that turned on every time you've eaten a power pellet. 4/5
Atari 8-bit family: Atari 5200 port, but it's playable. Still, that sound exists so it isn't 5/5. 4.5/5
Apple II: Ghosts look awful, and so does the text. 3.5/5
VIC-20(Atarisoft): It looks more bad, but the sound is less louder. 4.5/5
Commodore 64: Atari 5200 port, but every time you eat a power pellet/normal pellet, two dudes start banging on a old motel bed. 4/5
ColecoVision: It looks great, it sounds great and i'm sure it plays great! 5/5
Intellivision: Atari 2600 port, but the graphics are better and there's no flickering. Sound is still pretty annoying tho. 4/5
TI-99/4A: ColecoVision port, but far slower. 4/5
PC-DOS: Graphics would be great if it have released in 1985. And the sounds are *vomits* on this vomit i like to call "PC Speaker". 3/5
NEC PC-88: Sound is bad. That's all i can say about this one. 4.5/5
Sharp X1: Sound is horrible. 3/5
Sharp MZ-700: Bruh. 2.5/5
Sharp MZ-700(PCG): Graphics are a lot better, so it's 25% fixed. 3/5
Sharp MZ-1500: It looks more like an arcade version, but the start music is a LOT faster than any game play on these machines. 3.5/5
FM-7: Atari 2600 version, but it looks like an arcade. Oh, and sound is pretty bad. 3.5/5
MSX: Animation is smooth and sound isn't loud. And graphics do look pretty good. 5/5
NES: Remember what i said about MSX? Well, to see NES experience, just remove the "n't" from "isn't" and change the "good" to "bad". 4/5
ZX Spectrum: Sound isn't loud, but ghosts look like skulls/squids and i wouldn't even see cherry. 3/5
NEC PC-6001mkII: Ghosts are pretty wide and the sound is crappy. 3.5/5
If i will have more time, i will add more opinions about the ports, but for now, bye!

I had the Coleco tabletop version as a kid, and yes, it was big time ear rape. Sad thing was I played it frequently and got quite good at it.
Also, any version that puts the maze on its side should be Thanos snapped out of existence.
I wrote a small book with patterns for it when I was a kid. I still play it once in a while... I have 3 of them today, lol.
I think those unofficial versions put the maze on its side to avoid getting sued by Namco
@@Amtrak.Fan.281 it was more likely that they did it because they didn't have resolution needed to do it vertically, so doing it horizontally was a fine choice to programmers at the time
It would've been nice to see the Bally Astrocade port. It was eventually released as "Munchie" and "Muncher" after they failed to acquire the rights to sell it under the name "Pac-Man". Since Bally was the U.S. distributor for the arcade version they figured they had the right to use it for home console use but Atari had gained those rights already... they took Atari to court and Atari won. There were 21 prototype carts made which actually have the name "Pac-Man" when you play them, one of which I have.
The PacMan2 tabletop game by Entex was pretty good. You and a friend could take turns chasing the other as a ghost! Would've been good to get one of the playable watches from the '80s in there too. Pac-Man was *everywhere* in the 80s!
Your videos are really cool and I hope you keep doing them. I'm just dorky enough to love this stuff
11:11 The VIC-64 version not very pretty really... Despite its hardware "sprites" that seems to have been designed with games like this in mind. Plus the sound does not make use of the SID possibilities at all.
