Someone mentioned her age last year and my brain short-circuited. She's older than I am. She's a grown adult. I just mentally had her in a teenager/early-twenties category because that's how she acts and I never stopped to count how long she's been doing it.
Every time people talk like this about Taylor Swift, they just out themselves as someone who hasn't listened to her music in the last 10 years, aside from maybe her biggest singles. Just say you don't know her music and leave it at that. If you are curious about why she's so popular and admired and has had that level of staying power, I'd recommend starting with her last three albums (folklore, evermore, and midnights).

What Ben does with Taylor Swift is precisely what most of his supporters get mad about. Take a tiny piece of someone's body of work, make a judgement on it without any context, and then label them using that forevermore. A modicum of research would have told you that (1) her overpriced tickets are resale ones which she has no control over, (2) she's definitely a capitalist and has never pretended otherwise, (3) her music is not immature and definitely not about some boyfriend she broke up with - it actually shows exceptional depth and understanding of human emotion, especially the female experience at various stages of life. She has ten albums, with over 150 songs in her catalogue. Do you truly believe that the millions of people listening to her music are doing so because it's horrible and repetitive? Come on, give people more credit; give your listeners more credit. People are not stupid. There are plenty of one-hit wonders in the music industry or artists who are big for the span of one or two albums and then disappear into oblivion. Her staying power says something, so figure it out or stop talking about her.
The right's obsession with taking her on as an enemy is the most asinine move I have ever seen. She's by far the most conservative pop artist, especially at that calibre, and is not really political. The extent of her politics is supporting gay rights, supporting women in creative endeavours, and telling people to vote. I get that her power to get people to vote really freaks out the right, but like if you guys are scared of more young ppl voting, then good luck with handling the next 10-20 years. Instead, if I were on the American right, I would point out all the right-leaning things she represents, like capitalism, hard work, building community, wanting a family and children, and so on. That's a way to talk about her that would be productive.

In Taylor Swift's defense, her target audience is mostly teenagers and it's ok to make songs for your target audience. Personally, I wish all bands and artists kept to their roots. I dislike it very much when they 'grow up' and their music brand 'matures'. eg. Metallica has been rock/metal their entire 40 year career. Meanwhile Green Day hasn't had a good album in 20 years.
