its official this cello is more versatile then a violin
Versatile yes, not as agile though
Jonathan Humphries The advantage to a High E String on your 5 String Cello is that you can play Bach's 6'th Cello Suite.
also violin songs
@@isaiahbraddock That's what the 5 String Cello is best at doing, playing Violin pieces an Octave lower.
And the Bach sonatas for viola da gamba as well as other pieces with a little bit more ease…
That's really cool! I want to hear it played.
I did play it. Actually, I am the only person whom has played it. Edgar adjusted it and now it plays much better. (you will witness the moment I tell him my honest opinion in a later video)
@@CelloCoach You love the 5 String Cello. The High E string on a 5 String Cello is just like a Violin E string but it's an Octave lower. The fun thing about the 5 string cello is that you can play the 6th cello suite and you can also do cello versions of Violin pieces in the original key w/o having to write the solo cello part down on paper.
a great video as always
Thank you!
There should be another 5 string cello, this time with a low F.
Got ya covered with my CR5 :-)
@@CelloCoach You can put a High E String if you want. It's one Octave Below a Violin E String so a 5 String Cello tuned C, G, D, A, E might be perfect for transcribing Violin pieces for Cello.
@@CelloCoach Glad you have a 5 String Cello.
Would it be possible to put a low F and a high E on it?
@@RockStarOscarStern634 That's already the way he has the tuning set up.
Hey! Can you make a video on Tenor clef for cello please?Merci!
Bien sûr!
Tenor clef is a fifth above bass clef so it feels natural as the strings are tuned in fifths.
@@CelloCoach You have a 5 String Electric Cello but it's also great to have a 5 String Acoustic Cello too.
I was hoping Jonathan would play the 5 string cello so we could hear how it sounds.
DanKalsr 😂
Still in Italy, visiting family in Turin, but I did make a recording and presentation. It was a huge weekend for Edgar (he got married yesterday) and yet he still had the time to prep the 5 string for me! I am truly blessed to have friends like he. And, I met more master luthiers in Cremona, which I will interview next trip!
Is there something amusing you would like to share, Prof. McFarlane?
DanKalsr yes many would’ve loved to hear it, not just look at it. Just play it!
Looking is just part of this story, Professor. The fact Edgar made this is incredibly rare, and of such exquisite quality. I only had half a day with it, so do be kind when you hear Marais, Bach, Scarlatti and Elgar.
Cool! Neat to hear what considerations he made to accommodate the 5th string. I have a 5-string NS-WAV cello - had to put it aside of a while as i was still in my first year of learning cello and the 5th string was confusing the heck out of my brainfingers connection- am i counting strings up or down? I may try it again in a few months after i get more solid with my fingerings on my 4-string acoustic. :)
Oh, did the 5 string mess with my bow technique! It leaves no room for error! One must be very precise. This cello was both a blessing and a test of my own convictions, my faith! I'll have to do many Hail Mary's for all the curse words I uttered while recording. In the end, I hope it I do all you (and Edgar) proud.
@@CelloCoach And there is the 7 string viola da gamba...
Lol, the guy who sold me the 5-string recommended it over the four because, he said, i’d learn to become more precise in bow placement! I join you in the cursing. :)
Yeah, "you'll learn better bow technique" is total BS. You will learn how to maintain a very restrained, delicate and precise bow arm, and other matters I will share in upcoming video. I am curious Tina - for I too had a NS-CR6 and hated the extra two strings - how you are getting on with the CR5? By your avatar, you seem to be a like all of us. Please share your opinion and I will highlight your comment/story in this week's live stream!!
Jonathan, thanks for asking! Actually I have the NS WAV 5 string version which is their bottom of the line pricewise, specifically meant for those who want less expense but still the high quality bridge, pick up, and good quality materials. I wish I had gone with the CR whichever version has the preamp, that was much more than I have money for. Your bravery and playing the 5-string for us all has inspired me to pull my electric out to play again now that I’m a little better then I was. I will say the original fifth string, being a high E and thus so thin, had already broken due to a rough spot at the nut, so after filing that rough spot down I moved all the strings over to add a low F, of a girth and strength i could snake a toilet with. :) Although I’d love to have a Yamaha Silent cello instead, The yamaha SVC line doesn’t come with a stand, nor can be easily parked on a stand as far as i can tell. My main appreciation of the NS style is portability and that I can both play it from *and* leave it on the rather practical NS stand during a music jam with friends at a packed apartment or pub, go get a beer or glass of wine and nibbles, and then come back and have no fear for my cello’s safety, it’s just there holding my spot lookin pretty. So first - ease of getting it to where i’m playing, and 2nd that it’s a huge sound-quality and playability step up from the cheapest electric. I did get the endpin attachment but was quickly disappointed in that i then lost the ability to mount it on the stand, so i had to lie it on the couch where people wanted to sit - that didn’t last long, sold it to someone else. Now i just play it from the stand.
Those Wittner Machine Heads look just like standard ebony pegs but they're composite & they're stronger.
Agree - going to go all in and say machine pegs are the only pegs most modern cellists need. Antique cellos need to keep their pegs for valuation so for the rest of us, Whittner is the only way to go!
@@CelloCoach If Antonio Stradivarius (and all famous makers at the time especially the Baroque Era etc) used Machine Head tuners instead of the traditional friction pegs, imagine how much happier those players would've been not having any problems w/ string slippage, or peg slippage.
What is the vibrating string lenght? same as a full size cello?
good question - ask Edgar Russ
I'm surprised that there is not a low F (or E) string instead of the high e
@UC90kFaetJuVD5cAL_tZT1dQ
The fun thing about having Machine head Tuners on your Cello like on a Guitar or Mandolin is that you no longer need fine tuners on that tailpiece so that'll allow the instrument to vibrate more freely.
yes
@@CelloCoach So Modern Guitar Style Cello Machine Heads for the not-so-expensive Cellos (including Electric):www.internationalviolin.com/ProductDetail/34704_cello-machine-heads-two-plates such as your 7/8 Size Cello (a Realist Copperhead Piezo Pickup will help w/ Recording) for a Modern look, & Wittner Geared Pegs:wittner-gmbh.de/wittner_finetune_peg_cello.html for the more-expensive Antique & Baroque Cellos as a way to keep the traditional look while removing weight & gaining the ease of tuning up.
@@CelloCoach Wittner Geared Pegs are a good match for more expensive & antique instruments cause not only does it keep their traditional look & offer the ease of getting them tuned up (and strung up w/ a string winder), it also saves the peg box from wearing out as well as being able to remove the fine tuners from the tailpiece to lower the weight even further which will liven up the sound, so they're a good upgrade.
@@CelloCoach Some Antique Cellos would be better off w/ Guitar Style Machine Heads instead of the Wittner Friction Peg shaped Geared Pegs because there could be a crack next to those peg holes or the peg hole might be too big. It depends on what's the most appropriate to put on the instrument w/o breaking it, but the interest of using Machine Head tuners on a Violin, Viola, & Cello is finally going back up again, woo-hoo. No matter what style of music you play, say goodbye to those Obsolete Friction Pegs & Fine tuners from the tailpiece, & screw on your all new Machine Head Tuners:www.internationalviolin.com/ProductDetail/34704_cello-machine-heads-two-plates or if you have an Antique instrument use Wittner Geared Pegs:wittner-gmbh.de/wittner_finetune_peg_cello.html (w/ a handy string winder) because you'll make the instrument easier to tune & re-string w/o devaluing it.
@@CelloCoach Now w/ an expensive Antique Instrument, Guitar style machine heads can't devalue it, instead they add a decorative feature that increases their value.
Those machine heads are quite a big hit because the instrument will hold tune better.
But Pegheds are looking better than the Wittner Feinstimmwirbel…
I wonder how much does it coast.

@@CelloCoach That looks like the perfect Cello for the 6th suite. Because it has a High E String which is an octave below the Violin E string, you can play solo violin pieces and even violin concertos.
🙂😎🌞
from what I’ve heard 5-stringed cellos should be a little smaller because of the E string
A typical baroque variant of the 5-string-Cello named violoncello piccolo is smaller, but this isn‘t essential
Do 6 string cellos exists?
