Decisions, decisions, decisions.. That's why, I take two months off and don't pull anything from Thanksgiving to mid January.. But, when I do pull loads, I'm out for 4 to 6 weeks at a time..

Just found your channel and watched your 3 episodes on your hauling RVs. I read you got your CDL a month ago. Any more episodes or is it the end of this adventure?
Check with USAA on your coverage while operating commercially. My State Farm agent said under no circumstances would me or my truck be covered if I had an accident while towing a trailer for revenue. I’ve then got commercial insurance and it’s $355 per month.
I'll definitely have to look into that to ensure I'm covered. It would be unfortunate to discover I wasn't insured when I need it the most. Appreciate your input!

If you get commercial through your company and a unladden policy for when empty, do you still have to a personal policy to cover you for personal use or will the unladden cover you all the time.
If you are still doing this, there are some cost savings you can look into. Most of it is fuel mileage, start by driving a bit slower (60-62). Low rolling resistance tires will get you better fuel mileage. Same with over-inflating; 10lbs over what the tire says. Last, look at getting an OPS from Pittsburgh Power. It's an added oil filtration system that will make your oil last significantly longer between changes.
The Blue Ribbon Logistics podcast has a ton of good info on this type of stuff. Even though they are talking about tractor-trailers, it is applicable to pickups as well (obviously on a smaller scale).
If your truck has miles on it you might also look into a diesel force cleaning from Pittsburgh Power, and maybe even running their Max Mileage catalyst. Keeps the emissions systems clean and running smoother.

As far as oil changes go, you should go to the Ram dealer and ask for an oil change package with 3 to 4 oil changes. I have picked them up before for less than $70 and oil change and they say that use them at dealer. If they don’t have anything that month, go back the next month. I have a ram 3500 with the Cummings also thanks for sharing your video.
Remember to change your valve cover filter on the Cummins . Dorman makes a decent replacement for Pennys (compared to Cummins oem filter )
Hey Matt: I kno ur kinda new at this RV Trans game..but...it looks as tho ur gettin a game plan into it and how it could work for ya!! I think ur onto something with the short trips and a final longer one!! It almost seems as tho that could work for ya until u learn more about this other gig where u can take more than 1 unit at a time!! However that's not the reason i am writing actually...u mentioned a rooftop tent possibility for ur comfort and i think u may be onto something there..take ur idea to a place that installs and sells them and see what they can do for ya!! The other reason is in that i thought u may have been told this but u have not mentioned it so i will bring it up to u..that being a diesel heater...there are many different brands of these and they sip such very little fuel yet they have the capability to cook ya rite out of ur house lol!! I have seen several of these in operation on other channels and the guys swear by em!! Check it out and see whatcha think of em!! Best of luck in ur future endeavors!!
PS: I think ur logging wrong when u leave home and head back to IN..I believe u can do that as just like a regular drive as ur not under any kind of dispatch so therefore ur not doing any kind of company business!! I owned my own over the road trucks for over 25 years and as long as ur not under any kind of dispatch likewise u dint have to log it either!! With the advent of electronic logs it may have to be done under off duty not driving or maybe personal conveyance!! Unless there are rules for RV trans that differ from trucks i am not aware of u may wanna take a look into that..take care..Rick
Matt - great video as always. Appreciate the transparency when it comes to your lanes and rates. On Trip 1 - 3 you got basically $1.62-$1.87/mile. Thats not bad especially for a bumper pull. Right now at IT, those short runs go like $1.35-$1.50 mile Im seeing loaded. I do get access to see the entire load board and what the rates are etc so that is helpful for myself. I live in Michigan so Im alot closer and I can plan out my trip for the whole time pretty much. The disadvantage though is my rates are lower, but I think its just from holiday time because they were higher in November. Im hoping stuff with IT goes back up in the new year, but we will see. Keep the content coming.

Look at the bright side. You don’t have to pay income tax.
I suggest using a CB radio. It is actually a great safety tool. A lot of the pileups could be avoided if more drivers would use them.
Great content to help understand the industry! I would just stay in the truck. Roof top is not going to be as comfortable as a hotel on occasion. I would spend the tent money on those rooms and bank up. You want to get the money you made over the entire year put up to allow you time for school. Keep getting it done!

Run some zip ties around the awning arms to keep the awning tight. Keeps it from rattling or coming out.
Definitely a good tip. I do check to make sure that they are all the way in on my initial walk around.
Doesnt matter. When it comes out and destroys itself you are on the hook. Cover your ass lol. Zip ties will end that worry.

Most hotels in Goshen have transporter rates. Just something you might want to ask when you’re looking for a cheap hotel.

There's a Super 8 just around the corner from where I get my trailers, and they've got a transporter rate. It's only $5 off the online rate, but hey, it's something. Plus, the rooms are pretty nice. Thanks for the comment!

Long one pays better but you've got a pretty good dead head back to load again, with the short one you were close to next load.
What are you or anyone else netting at the end of the year? I drive a semi 5 days a week and make roughly 400 a day 70 hours a week and this type of work peeked my interest.

A cold night is one thing. You can run a generator for heat. What is your plan for sleeping in your truck in the heat of the summer? Is idling your truck for a/c an option?
Many have recommended a portable A/C unit that should be more than sufficient to cool down the truck cab. Frankly, I'm seriously contemplating a rooftop tent now. I believe it would provide ample legroom for a complete stretch, and most tents allow you to keep your sleeping gear inside. Thanks for the comment!
I used to idle my truck all night in the summer and just use a bunch of blankets and a hooded sweatshirt in the cold. Just be mindful of carbon monoxide. I had a CO2 alarm in case CO2 levels got to high from the emissions on my truck or another truck. I never had any problems and used about an 1/8 th of a tank a night or so.

I used to do the same thing, but it cost me a transmission when my input bearing on my manual 6-speed went out from all of the extra idling time. My truck had 97K when I started RV Transport and I ran for approximately 18 months before things became too slow for me to continue.
Be mindful on transmission when idling. Most transmissions do NOT cycle fluid in Park .!!! Do your research on your transmissions and passages of fluid . You can extract the check ball in the valve body so when it is in park idling it still lets the fluid cycle fully (not as the normal stagnant)
I’m going with Classic in October of this year, leaving my company driving job. How is it at Classic if you are still there? Plus do they have specific mud flap requirements? I use rock tamers on my truck currently, plus the stock Ram mudflaps that came on the truck.

Early Monday Morning
Rooftop tent would hurt fuel economy and limit you to travel trailers and no fifth wheels unless it was directly on the roof and not over the bed. I would strongly stay away from that. I had them on off-road rigs but wouldnt on a money maker when fuel is important
You're likely correct, but my fuel efficiency is already pretty poor. I believe the trade-off for a restful night's sleep is worth the compromise. Perhaps I could invest in a roof rack with a wedge on the front to redirect some wind up and over the tent, reducing drag. I'd mount it over the cab to ensure it doesn't interfere with towing a fifth wheel at all. It would be crucial to find one that allows side entry rather than rear entry. Thanks for the comment!

I drove RV Transport for Horizon from 2018-2019 when the loads were plentiful and had a blast. I live in California and would routinely confirm a load back to California before I ever left my house. One time I drove to Wakarusa, picked up a trailer to Houston then back to Indiana to pick up a trailer to California. It was a good pay day. You are making me want to ket back in to it but I figured it's still too slow. Hmmmmmm.
Have you thought about running a Gen Y hitch with your WDH? I heard some great things about it.
Heard about it, never tried. Wanna give it a shot after all the good reviews. Gen-Y, send me one to try out, will ya? Using Blue Ox SwayPro now, love how easy it is to switch between trailers. Also got the B&W Continuum on my personal trailer - solid choice. Tried Husky and Equalizer before; Husky lacked sway control, Equalizer was just too noisy.

Matt, thank you for documenting your experience. I am thinking about getting into RV Transport and have most of the equipment already. My question is do you need to have a class A CDL if I am running a 2500? I have run non CDL before, but it was a corporate job.

Buy a battery box and put your small battery in it when it won’t work to clamp over frame
I considered getting a battery box and securing a 2x4 to it for the bracket to clamp onto, but I opted for a second full-size battery instead. Even if I don't end up using it, my personal travel trailer could use a new battery anyway.
While at school, real quick take a course in small business accounting. Preferably for truckers, hot shot drivers or other transportation provider You are missing a bunch of expenses/costs in your profit analysis. Like, you have to include replacement costs for your truck. You have full time expenses being inserted into your part time business. Making sure you get proper insurance for a part time business, additional liability is expensive for a truck, etc. i’ve been s/e for most of my life. You must treat it like a business or you can loose your shirt real fast. Back when i was starting out, you could only show a tax loss for 3out of 5years or you were deemed a hobby…that changes all the deductions to personal, not business. Its a hard thing to deal with when they audit you 3 years later…not fun i’m sure.

Just like Tony the Tiger says, "They're grrrrrreat!" I really wish I could opt for a load board instead of relying on dispatchers. It's not that I don't think they are helping me; I just prefer handling it myself. The idea of having control over what I'm dispatched on sounds pretty appealing. Thanks for your comment!
I don’t know what battery you are using, however, have you tried creating a sleeve so to speak? This will allow you to have one battery and just slip the battery into the sleeve when needed.

Technically, no, but I opt to use it for the added stability. I'm aware that some transport companies mandate the use of a weight distribution system, so make sure to check the requirements when contacting a recruiter. Thanks for the feedback!

You want 10% hitch weight, why couldn't you have put the brake battery in the battery compartment? You don't need a full size battery.
"Fees" - I don't recollect what those are, but, it sounds like dropping those "fees" on you is done so they can quote a lower rate for the overall transport and have the contractor "eat" part of their costs so they'll have a margin to work with...
I'd do what you're doing - paid to get back close enough to home...Sure, you'll have some extra to run from home, but, you'll be closer to home and paid to get there. You're basically filling a backhaul which isn't a bad thing at all. You're a contractor - you're not a contractor to stay in truck stops needlessly, you're a contractor so you can choose how you spend your time when you're not on duty. On duty == driving with a camper on the back.

West coast lodes pay the best. Most people try to get paid 1300 miles on average a week.
You're absolutely correct about that. The West Coast runs haven't quite worked with my current schedule since they would require a minimum of 3 days to drive there and another 3 days to return to Indiana. Once I can free up more time to stay on the road, I'm definitely interested in taking on some California runs.

It'd be so cool if I could just leave home, already lined up with a bunch of loads to tackle before I even arrive. Planning my routes and figuring out when I'd be back home would be a piece of cake. But as it stands, I hit the road without even knowing if there'll be work waiting for me after a two-day drive.

I use a 2015 Ram 2500 and Walmart does my oil changes for $80....can't do them myself for that!
Whoa! Is that deal at every Walmart, or just the one you're going to? And wait, is your RAM a diesel? You've got a point, doing it yourself could end up costing more, not to mention dealing with the used oil disposal hassle. I'd happily shell out $80 for a hassle-free oil change too. Every one as far as I know does it for that. The thing is.....they only charge $2.15 or so for each extra quart over 5. Mine is also a 6.7 Cummins. I almost went with Classic back the first of November, from Horizon. Decided to go with Synergy because they have lots of Fl. and Ga. loads to keep me from deadheading both directions.
Where does Horizon’s loads mainly go? Thinking of getting with them. I’m coming from Las Vegas, NV.
@@tome6551, I'm not entirely certain about Horizon, but I think they're the largest transport company. Typically, transport companies primarily haul for a main manufacturer, with additional manufacturers in the mix. At Classic, my workplace, we mainly deal with Forest River but handle others too. I've heard Horizon does a significant amount with Jayco and others, often delivering to Camping World, but I could be mistaken. Thanks for the comment!
@tome6551 I wish I could tell you where their loads went. Usually, there were 10-20 loads on the board and most all were of no interest to me. They have favorites, and it's VERY cliquish and impersonal.
